SyFy Has Officially Canceled STARGATE UNIVERSE

The series seemed to be in danger for the past few weeks, but now it’s official. Today SyFy announced they have canceled Stargate Universe and will not renew the series for a third season. As of now this marks the end of the long-running series of TV adaptation which essentially created a Stargate franchise which all started with just one feature film in 1994. SyFy has really been killing the dreams of sci-fi TV fans this year, especially with their recent cancellation of Caprica and a seemingly mediocre American adaptation of Being Human taking up precious airtime instead. Surely plenty of longtime fans aren’t going to be happy about this, so feel free to sound off below.

UPDATE: As of now, Syfy plans on airing the last ten episodes early next year.  They had already been shot before today’s series cancellation.  That means the last episode is most likely going to end without resolution.

STARGATE UNIVERSE The Complete First Season DVD Review

As a huge fan of SyFy’s Stargate SG-1 (particularly the Richard Dean-Anderson era), I was very much looking forward to Stargate Universe. The Stargate Atlantis spinoff had always seemed like it was trying to hard to be like its predecessor and Universe looked to be a great turnaround from that. The Lost and Battlestar Galactica-like vibes of the show, on paper, looked like it could work. Universe doesn’t begin to touch either of those shows, or even SG-1 for that matter, but the first season does make large strides towards creating its own identity in an already incredibly elaborate universe.  Hit the jump for my review of Stargate Universe.

STARGATE UNIVERSE 1.5 Blu-ray Review

Lost in space, low on supplies and morale, ready for in-fighting to do them all in at any moment, the reluctant crew of the Defiant searches for a way home and a means to survive the far reaches of space.  This is the overarching story of Stargate Universe.  A different direction for the Stargate franchise, it’s the characters (and thusly, the performances) that bring this series to life.  More after the jump:

Alaina Huffman Video Interview STARGATE UNIVERSE and Kino 25: Drop the Sirs

Alaina Huffman Stargate Universe slice

If you’re a fan of Stargate Universe, you’re going to enjoy my video interview with Alaina Huffman.  That’s because unlike a typical junket interview that lasts four to five minutes and you can only scratch the surface, yesterday afternoon I sat down with 1st Lt. Tamara Johansen (who she plays on SGU) for an extended interview.   During our conversation she talked about how things are going on season two and what it’s really like on set, conventions, Comic-Con, twitter, being a series regular for the first time, what happened when she told the producers she was pregnant, and I also asked some questions people sent me on twitter.  If you’re watching SGU, you’re going to like the behind the scenes stories.

Also, the folks at MGM have given me a new Kino to premiere and it’s the 25th one called “Drops the Sirs”.  The Kino is a conversation between Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) and Scott (Matthew Scott) and it concerns a recent episode where someone was left on a planet.

Hit the jump to watch both videos.  And if you’re not watching SGU, you’re missing out on a great show.

3 Exclusive STARGATE UNIVERSE Images Including One Featuring ALIENS!

Stargate Universe image SGU slice.jpg

With Stargate Universe returning this Friday for season 1.5, we’ve been given 3 exclusive images from this week’s episode.  If you’ve been watching the show, one of the images is extremely cool as it’s our first look at aliens on SGU.  While I don’t know if the aliens will be on just one episode, or if this is the beginning of a big storyline, it’s cool to see SGU expand beyond the Destiny ship.

And for those that have heard good things about SGU but haven’t been watching, Syfy is airing the first 10 episodes this Friday leading up to the premiere.  So if you haven’t taken a sick day in awhile…Friday might be a good day to stay home to watch some TV.  Hit the jump to check out the 3 exclusive images and this week’s synopsis.

STARGATE UNIVERSE 1.0 Blu-Ray Review

Stargate Universe image SGU slice.jpg

Remember how Deep Space Nine was the game changer for the Star Trek series, taking the concept in a gritty, new direction?  Stargate Universe sees that challenge and raises it.  What a difference one measly chevron makes.

The best way to sum up Stargate Universe is the Bob Marley tune Buffalo Soldiers: “Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival”.  For those that don’t speak rasta, understand that the plight of Stargate Universe is a gritty struggle wherein the winner gets to live another day.  The heretofore unheard of ninth chevron dictates the shift of Stargate Universe.  Previously in the Stargate universe, characters used eight chevrons to dial up a planet.  In order to dial into this mysterious ninth chevron, the Stargate requires massive amounts of power.  A team of scientists stationed off-world attempt to discern how to channel that planet’s energy into the Stargate to activate the ninth chevron not fully realizing exactly what’s on the other side.  When the planet falls under attack, they use the gate as their means of escape and find themselves trapped aboard The Ancients’ ship Destiny.  I’m sure back in the day this was quite the flagship, but it has fallen in disrepair over the many years of abandonment and our hodgepodge crew must think fast to acquire just the rudimentary necessities to live.  So important are these little things we take for granted that episodes take on the necessity as a title such as Air, Water and Time.  More after the jump.

Collider Visits the Set of STARGATE UNIVERSE; Plus Watch an On Set Interview with the Cast and Executive Producer Brad Wright

As I said last week when I gave away some autographed posters, I watched the first few episodes of “Stargate Universe” and was impressed. I thought “SGU” has a great concept and if they do it right, it could be some really cool TV. To help promote the show, Syfy held a press day on the Vancouver set and I was lucky enough to go.

While I usually have to transcribe on-set interviews, Syfy gave us all DVDs of the event! This means you can watch the entire conversation with the cast. And now that many of you have seen the first two episodes of “SGU”, I think you’ll really enjoy seeing the cast talk about their characters and what’s coming up. Hit the jump to see the interview and read my thoughts about the set of “Stargate Universe”:
