Despite Hollywood’s September slowdown, studios are still sending plenty of movies into theatres. Few of this year’s fall freshmen are connecting with audiences, however. Like Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” one week ago, this weekend’s box office had room for only one hit out of four attempts – Sony Animation’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. The CGI adaptation of the popular children’s book brought in an estimated $30 million in its first three days for over $9,000 per screen. When measured against competing titles like “Jennifer’s Body” and “Love Happens” that’s damn near a landslide of cash.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Cloudy with a… | $30,100,000 | $30,100,000 |
| 2 | The Informant! | $10,545,000 | $10,545,000 |
| 3 | I Can Do Bad… | $10,060,000 | $37,932,000 |
| 4 | Love Happens | $8,456,000 | $8,456,000 |
| 5 | Jennifer’s Body | $6,800,000 | $6,800,000 |
| 6 | 9 | $5,458,000 | $22,794,000 |
| 7 | Inglourious Basterds | $3,603,000 | $109,901,000 |
| 8 | All About Steve | $3,400,000 | $26,678,000 |
| 9 | Sorority Row | $2,489,000 | $8,870,000 |
| 10 | The Final Destination | $2,375,000 | $62,392,000 |

Of this weekend’s four new films, there wasn’t much doubt about who was going to claim the top spot on Friday. In the wake of the R-rated revolution of August, Sony’s family-friendly “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” had a good shot at a great opening weekend even without the added attraction of the toon’s 3D format. The studio was hoping for a weekend total around $20 million but, after adjusting their expectations as Friday’s numbers rolled in, it looks like the final 3-day tally will be closer to $30 million. 20th Century Fox also had to adjust their expectations after Friday’s debut of “Jennifer’s Body”. The long-awaited Megan Fox/Diablo Cody horror-hybrid debuted with a truly dismal $2.8 million… not quite the second place finish that many predicted. Second went instead to Steven Soderbergh’s “The Informant!”, though at only $3.6 million no one at Warner Brothers is doing back-flips. And the news wasn’t much better for Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart in “Love Happens”. To watch Hollywood’s A-listers suffocate further under Sony’s falling food, check back tomorrow.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Cloudy w/a Chance… | $8,100,000 | $8.1 |
| 2 | The Informant! | $3,665,000 | $3.6 |
| 3 | I Can Do Bad All… | $3,100,000 | $30.9 |
| 4 | Love Happens | $3,084,000 | $3 |
| 5 | Jennifer’s Body | $2,800,000 | $2.8 |

Opening September 18th is the latest Jennifer Aniston dramedy “Love Happens”. The only reason I’m willing to give this a chance is her co-star is Aaron Eckhart. He’s a good actor and he’s always been super nice when doing interviews. But if he wasn’t in it…
Anyway, while this genre isn’t my thing, for many of you out there, this is why you go to the movies. And really…who am I to judge, as you probably wonder why I get super excited for any sci-fi film. So if you’re curious, after the jump are 5 clips from the film, along with the synopsis. Take a look.
Universal Studios has just released the first trailer for their new romantic dramedy “Love Happens” and it’s after the jump. The film stars Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston and it’s about a self-help author (Eckhart) who unexpectedly meets the one person (Aniston) who might finally be able to help him help himself.
Sorry for ruining the movie for all of you…but I’m going to guess it all works out in the end.
All kidding aside, while this genre doesn’t interest me in the slighest, millions of you do watch this because if you didn’t, the studios would stop making them. So if you’re interested, you can check out the first poster, images and the trailer after the jump.
