The moment you’re famous enough that your voice becomes recognizable, the animated movie offers must come pouring in, but even after years of being in the spotlight, Epic only marks Amanda Seyfried’s very first foray into the world of voice work. She plays Mary Katherine, the daughter of Professor Bomba (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) who’s essentially given up everything for an obsessive pursuit to prove that there are tiny warriors living in the forest. Like everyone else, MK isn’t buying it, but when Queen Tara (voiced by Beyonce Knowles) has no choice but to shrink MK down to Leaf Man size so she can help save the forest, MK realizes her father’s been right all along.

With Epic on its way to a May 24th release, Seyfried sat down in New York City to talk about making the film and more. We ran through what drew her to the project, her love of the forest, the challenge of tapping into her imagination while in a sound booth, the physicality involved in doing voice work, how voicing an animated character compares to singing live on set, and the awkwardness of non-dialogue voice work. Seyfried also offered an update on her upcoming projects including Lovelace and Z for Zachariah. Hit the jump to watch.

One of the many films to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Linda Lovelace biopic Lovelace.  The film stars Amanda Seyfried as the titular porn star who rose to prominence following 1972’s Deep Throat (the first pornographic feature film to be a mainstream success).  Lovelace would eventually go on to claim that her husband Chuck Traynor (played by Peter Sarsgaard) physically and verbally abused her, and coerced her into the pornography business.   The film also stars Juno Temple, Wes Bently, Sharon Stone, Hank Azaria, Adam Brody, and James Franco as Hugh Hefner.

The day after the premiere, I sat down with Sarsgaard for an exclusive interview.  We talked about how he got cast in Lovelace, his initial hesitation to play Chuck Traynor, Sundance, how he prepares for a role, working with Woody Allen on Blue Jasmine, director Kelly Reichardt’s Night Moves, director S. Craig Zoller’s western Bone Tomahawk, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Sundance 2013: LOVELACE Review

by     Posted: January 24th, 2013 at 8:54 am

lovelace-amanda-seyfried-slice

The world wanted to possess Linda Lovelace.  Celebrity always involves an aspect of ownership (it’s why we feel justified in judging the lives of famous people even though they’re personally strangers to us), but Lovelace was treated as a possession by her family, her husband, and ultimately the world as she became famous not for any aspect of her personality, but because she had one particular talent.  In Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman‘s biopic Lovelace, the filmmakers change the narrative of Lovelace from sex icon to victim of domestic abuse.  The movie finds a tenuous connection between the public and private possession of Lovelace, but the narrative’s strength comes from stars Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard taking a mature approach to domestic violence, which helps Lovelace rise above its melodrama and poor structure.

Amanda Seyfried Strips Down for LOVELACE Poster

It’s been a little while since we had a porn star update, so here’s a new poster featuring Linda Lovelace.  Technically, it’s Amanda Seyfried portraying Linda Lovelace in this new poster for the indie biopic, Lovelace.  Splitting hairs.  It’s not as provocative as you might expect, but I’m reserving some hope that, as the movie gets closer to release (unexpected pun!), the material gets more and more risque.  If that wasn’t the plan, it’s something the Lovelace marketing team might want to consider.

Then again, it’s not all about the sex appeal, since a good portion of Lovelace deals with the abusive relationship between the porn star and her husband, Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard).  You can take a look at previously released images, set photos and posters here.  Lovelace also stars Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and James Franco.  Hit the jump to see the new poster.

Sarah Jessica Parker Replaces Demi Moore as Gloria Steinem in LOVELACE

by     Posted: January 27th, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Just a few days ago, Demi Moore was forced to drop out of her cameo role as Gloria Steinem in the biopic Lovelace. Now it appears producers have settled on a replacement, as EW reports that Sarah Jessica Parker will now take over the Steinem role. The film stars Amanda Seyfried as the titular Linda Lovelace and chronicles the actress’ rise to fame following Deep Throat. The film centers on Lovelace’s tempestuous relationship with her husband (Peter Sarsgaard), who she accused of coercing her into the profession.

I don’t necessarily think Parker is a fantastic choice to play the feminist icon, and I much preferred the rumored Mary-Louise Parker as Moore’s replacement. No matter, the role is ultimately a small one in the film. Steinem founded Ms. Magazine, which published an article entitled “The Real Linda Lovelace” that discussed Lovelace’s abusive relationship with her pornographer husband. The pic also stars Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple, and James Franco as Hugh Hefner. Lovelace is currently filming in Los Angeles.

Chloe Sevigny Joins LOVELACE; Demi Moore Drops Out of Cameo Role

by     Posted: January 25th, 2012 at 11:49 am

The star-studded biopic Lovelace has gained one actress but lost another. THR reports that Chloe Sevigny is set to reunite with her Shattered Glass co-star Peter Sarsgaard in the Linda Lovelace-centered film. The pic stars Amanda Seyfried as the titular Lovelace, and chronicles her experience as the world’s first porn star in Deep Throat. Sevigny is coming onboard to play a feminist journalist who sets out to find out who the real Linda Lovelace is. A large portion of the film will deal with Lovelace’s claims that her abusive husband (played by Sarsgaard) coerced her into the profession.

Additionally, Demi Moore has had to back out of her role in the film. She was slated to cameo as Gloria Steinem, but THR reports that she was admitted to the hospital Monday night and has now dropped out of Lovelace. The impressive cast includes Juno Temple, Wes Bently, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Hank Azaria, Chris Noth, and possibly James Franco as Hugh Hefner. Lovelace is currently filming in Los Angeles.
