In the dark comedy Lucky, actress Ari Graynor takes on her first co-lead role as Lucy, the object of affection for Ben (Colin Hanks), who just won $36 million in the lottery. Ben has been crushing on Lucy since childhood, but she marries him strictly for the cash. Just as she’s beginning to have genuine feelings for him, Lucy discovers that he’s a serial killer whose victims all resemble her and, as the newlyweds try to make things work, she learns that covering up for him is not as easy as it seems.
During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Ari Graynor talked about how ready she was to take on more responsibility in a film, the crazy ride that her character takes, how great the whole process of working with this cast was, and why she finds herself drawn to comedy. She also talked about her upcoming roles in The Sitter, opposite Jonah Hill, What’s Your Number?, opposite Anna Faris, Celeste and Jesse Forever, with Rashida Jones, and My Mother’s Curse, with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand. In the dark comedy Lucky, Ben (Colin Hanks) wins the lottery and, suddenly, his childhood crush, Lucy (Ari Graynor), becomes interested in him. Ben has been in love with her for years, but she has a hidden agenda, looking to appropriate his new found wealth. But, Ben is far from the shy, quiet guy that Lucy believed him to be and she gets more than she bargained for when she discovers that Ben’s past times include the occasional murder. In trying to make their marriage work, Lucy realizes that covering up for a serial killer is anything but easy.
During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Colin Hanks talked about the appeal of a role so different from what people have come to know him for, playing a serial killer under the spotlight for winning millions in the lottery, making his character likeable even though he does such unlikeable things, and working with such a fun group of actors. He also talked about being part of the cast for Season 6 of the hit Showtime drama Dexter, how exciting it is to be involved in the latest storyline, how much he can’t wait to go to Comic-Con, the experience of making My Mother’s Curse with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen, and his desire to make a documentary about the Tower Records legacy. With co-writer/director Gil Cates Jr.’s (Deal) Lucky set to hit select theaters on July 15th, we’ve been given an exclusive clip to share with our readers. Starring Colin Hanks, Ari Graynor, Jeffrey Tambor, Mimi Rogers, and Ann-Margret, Lucky tells the story of a man (Hanks) who wins the lottery and lands his lifelong crush (Graynor) as a direct result. However, the fairytale quickly takes a turn when she learns that, while not spending his winnings, he enjoys serial killing.

The first trailer for the indie comedy Lucky has been released. The film stars Colin Hanks as an unassuming young man who wins the lottery and marries the girl of his dreams. Oh, and he also likes to kill people (experience should come in handy for his arc on the upcoming season of Dexter). The trailer’s actually alright. At first it seems a little “straight-to-DVD,” but once the premise comes across, Lucky looks like it could be a pretty good quirky comedy. I really like Hanks, and a serial-killer indie comedy actually seems like a good fit for his comedic style. In addition to Hanks, the cast includes Jeffrey Tambor, Ann-Margaret, Mimi Rogers and Ari Graynor. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to win the lottery? Do you think all your problems would disappear? After watching Jeffrey Blitz’s (Rocket Science, Spellbound) new documentary Lucky, I’ve learned what people go through when they come into a ton of new money and it isn’t always easy.
Lucky premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and the film features interviews with both lottery winners and regular folks hoping to win. What’s interesting is how some of the winners have changed dramatically, and others are almost the exact same people. It’s a fascinating movie about something millions of people play every week, and by the end, you’ll probably want to buy a ticket.
While at the Festival, I was able to talk with Jeffrey Blitz and producer Sean Welch. They talked about being back at Sundance, how hard it was to find people to be in the film, the editing process, what will be on the DVD, and they tell some great behind the scenes stories. Watch what they had to say after the jump:

While millions of kids around the world know the origin of Superman and Batman, I’d wager most of them don’t know they were originally created by DC comics a long time ago. But if director Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound, Rocket Science, Lucky) and producer Sean Welch (he produced all three of Blitz’s movies) have their way, at this summer’s Comic-Con, a lot more people are going to know the history of DC comics.
The reason is at last week’s Sundance Film Festival, the two filmmakers told me they’ve just started work on a documentary about the history of DC Comics! While they just started rolling cameras last week, they said the plan is to premiere the movie at this summer’s Comic-Con. And if you’re nervous they’re doing this without the support of DC, Welch told me:
“DC Comics contacted us and asked if we would do this. Jeff and the director are comic book enthusiasts since they were kids and remain comic book enthusiasts. So yes, we have access to their archives, their material, their covers, their panels, the creatives and the executives in the DC world.”

Lucky has Blitz going around the country interviewing a number of past winners of the Lottery. Some won a little, others a lot. What’s interesting is how some of them changed dramatically and others are almost the exact same people.
Anyway, after the first press screening ended earlier today, Peter Sciretta and David Chen from Slashfilm and I recorded our thoughts on my Flip mini outside the theater. If you’d like to check it out, hit the jump:
