Fast & Furious 6 is a machine running close to peak performance.  The Fast & Furious franchise has been stripped down and rebuilt through six iterations.  It’s gone from racing to revenge to a heist and now it’s forced to find its own identity.    After finding a good group of characters and upping the stakes in the action scenes, there’s finally a level of confidence instead of simply watching fast cars drive around.  The new movie struts into the room and proudly proclaims, “If we’re going to be goofy and loud, we’re going to be the goofiest, loudest movie we can be!”  It’s almost admirable in its own twisted way.  After four films, Justin Lin‘s direction has finally matched the ambition of his set pieces, and aside from indulging in the “family is everything” treacle, Fast & Furious 6 is easily the best film in the franchise yet.

After studio lawsuits, and a great deal of rumors and fallout with various actors, the Welsh actor Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6) has taken the lead in director F. Javier Gutierrez’s (Before the Fall) upcoming remake of The Crow.  As we previously reported, actors Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers), Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), and James McAvoy (X-Men: Days of Future Past) were all rumored for the role, but it looks like it’s Evan who will ultimately be starring.  Allegedly, Evans was originally courted for the lead, but at the time he was unable to commit due to his busy schedule.  The actor is currently signed on, however, now that Relativity Media has agreed to push back the start date to early next year.  Hit the jump for more details on Evans and his role in the film.

Universal Pictures has released a final trailer for Fast Five director Justin Lin’s sequel Fast & Furious 6, and it’s chock-full of summer blockbuster goodness. This trailer does a great job of showing off the film’s ginormous scale, as we get some extended looks at Lin’s many action sequences.  Car chases through the streets of Europe, brutal fistfights in which The Rock pulls some legit wrestling moves, and a car chase/fight sequence involving a tank are all things we can look forward to with Fast & Furious 6.  Producer Neal Moritz recently told us that the film features two or three of “the best action sequences you will ever see” and noted that Fast 6 is the best film of the series yet.  We’ll get a chance to judge for ourselves in a few short weeks, but this trailer definitely makes the film look like one hell of a ride.

Univeral’s Dracula, formerly Dracula Year Zero, the studio’s monstrous origin story of the most famous of all vampires, has landed Luke Evans (The Raven) in the lead role.  In his first starring studio role, Evans will play a young prince who makes the ultimate sacrifice to save his wife and child in this historically oriented take on the origin of the infamous vamp.  Debut feature director Gary Shore, who earned his experience in the world of commercials, plans to start production on the film later this year.  The film’s producer Mike De Luca previously spoke with Steve a few years ago when the studio had pulled the plug on the picture due to budget issues.  Hit the jump for more on Evans’ role and to see what De Luca revealed about Dracula Year Zero.

A new theatrical trailer for Fast & Furious 6 has been released online.  Though the supervillain for Fast & Furious 7 may have already been spoiled, we still have director Justin Lin’s eminent sequel to look forward to in the immediate future.  The film moves the action of the franchise across the pond to Europe, where Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is trying to stop a group of mercenary drivers led by an unnamed mastermind (Luke Evans) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).  Hobbs recruits Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew to help bring down the criminal outfit, and in exchange will provide pardons for the Rio heist.  This trailer is essentially a shorter, edited version of the first full trailer, but it’s still a fun watch if only for the reminder that we’ll be seeing a car explode out the front of a plane in the film.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  The film also stars Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris Bridges, Elsa Pataky, and Gina Carano.  Fast & Furious 6 opens May 24th.

The full trailer for Fast & Furious 6 has gone online.  It looks like this movie has everything fans could want and more.  I’m curious what the runtime on this flick will be considering you have the whole team trying to get pardons, fighting a rival carjacking crew (a clever idea for a new foe), and the return of Dom’s love, Letty.  But more than anything, it looks like director Justin Lin has pulled out all the stops to make the sixth installment the biggest and best one yet.  Take it from someone who hasn’t been a big fan of the series thus far: this trailer left a big smile on my face.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, and in case you missed it, click here to check out the film’s Super Bowl spot. The film stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Joe Taslim, and Luke EvansFast & Furious 6 opens May 24th.

First Poster for FAST AND FURIOUS 6

fast-and-furious-6-poster-slice

Over the past few months, we’ve heard a number of different titles (Fast Six, Furious 6) for the 6th installment in the Fast and Furious franchise.  But thanks to the studio releasing the first poster, we know it’s officially called Fast and Furious 6.  While I understand the logic in that title, I think Furious 6 sounds a lot cooler.

As we learned the other day when we posted the synopsis, the new film has Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) trying to stop a group of mercenary drivers led by an unnamed mastermind (Luke Evans) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).  Hobbs recruits Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew to help bring down the criminal outfit, and in exchange will provide pardons for the Rio heist.  The film also stars Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky, and Gina Carano.  Hit the jump to check out the first poster and come back tomorrow to check out the first footage from the film.

We’re still not 100% sure if the new Fast & Furious movie is entitled “Fast & Furious 6” (it could be “Fast Six“, “Furious Six“, or maybe even my personal prediction, Fast Cars Go Boom Now), but no matter what it ends up being called, we now have the first synopsis.  The new film has Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) trying to stop a group of mercenary drivers led by an unnamed mastermind (Luke Evans) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).  Hobbs recruits Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew to help bring down the criminal outfit, and in exchange will provide pardons for the Rio heist.

Although Entertainment Weekly promised a look ahead at next year’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in their upcoming collector’s issues, they’re going even further ahead with this new image from 2014′s The Hobbit: There and Back Again. It features a good look at both Luke Evans (The Raven), who plays Bard the Bowman, and Orlando Bloom, who returns as the Elf, Legolas. Bard was mentioned in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit but Legolas didn’t turn up until The Lord of the Rings series, so what’s he doing here other than looking all immortal and pretty? Hit the jump to see the full image along with an explanation from the filmmakers.

[Update: A new image from An Unexpected Journey has been released that features Gandalf squaring off against the Goblin King, which is now included after the jump.]

TIFF 2012: NO ONE LIVES Review

no-one-lives-luke-evans-slice

Ryûhei Kitamura‘s No One Lives is trying so hard to be cool, it hurts.  It is a complete and utter wreck of a screenplay that sounds like it was written by an idiotic 16-year-old boy.  The acting is abysmal, and only made worse by the fact that there are real actors put side-by-side with amateur ones.  Kitamura’s earlier film, Versus, wasn’t a great, but it at least showed some kinetic energy.  However, that kind of slick movement, or any personality beyond a generic slasher, is completely absent from his new movie.  All it has to offer is gruesome kills, and not even particularly inventive ones at that.  But hey, the protagonist is a violent psychopath in a black trench coat, so I guess that means this movie has a personality.  It’s just a personality no one wants to be around.

Less than a week ago, we posted this photo of Dwayne Johnson and Gina Cararno posing like the badasses they are on the set of Fast and Furious 6.  Not to be outdone, stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker posed for another image, along with director Justin Lin.  All we really know so far is that production has started and the plot of the film appears to center around dueling heist teams.

The movie also stars Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Joe Taslim, and Luke Evans.  The film is slated to open May 24, 2013.  Hit the jump to check out the new image.

High Frame Rate Version of THE HOBBIT to See Limited Release, May Not Appear in All Major Cities

When director Peter Jackson touted the high frame rate of 48 frames per second for his upcoming fantasy epic, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, we were understandably excited.  However, the reality of the technology had the unexpected consequence of looking too real, as if one were standing on set watching a movie being filmed.  While Warner Bros. still believes that 48fps is the way of cinematic future, they’re being careful with their first major release by limiting the sites that will screen The Hobbit at the higher frame rate.  There is talk of expanding the release of future installments in 48fps dependent on audience reaction.  Hit the jump for more.
