Robert Rodriguez has no problem blending sex with violence.  He replaced one of Rose McGowan‘s legs with a gun in Planet Terror, and now he’s strapped a pair of firearms to the breasts of Sofia Vergara in Machete Kills.  The flick is the second in a planned trilogy (the third film supposedly takes place in space), and centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  Hopefully, Rodriguez won’t make the mistake of the first film by relegating Machete into a supporting role in his own movie, but judging by the number of stars, it looks like that’s exactly what will happen.

Sofía Vergara is part of the colorful cast of Escape from Planet Earth, the animated feature directed by Cal Brunker opening in theater this Friday and featuring the voices of Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, Brendan Fraser, George Lopez, Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry.  The film follows the comedic misadventures of friendly aliens on Planet Baab who find themselves trapped by evil forces on the distant “Dark Planet” after they respond to an interplanetary call for help.

At a roundtable interview at the film’s press day last week, Vergara talked about her character, Gabby Babblebrock, the hot and spicy anchor for BNN News.  She discussed why she accepted the fun role on short notice, how the recording experience compared to her previous work in Happy Feet Two and The Smurfs, why she wasn’t surprised by the film’s large Latino cast, what she likes best about shooting Modern Family, how she finds time to keep up with her large Twitter following, indulging in beignets at Café du Monde in New Orleans’ French Quarter during the recent Super Bowl, and starring opposite Danny Trejo in the upcoming Machete Kills.  Hit the jump to read more. 

Director Robert Rodriguez’s sequel Machete Kills now has a release date, as the continued adventures of the titular Machete will commence on September 13th of this year.  The pic is the second in a planned trilogy (the third film supposedly takes place in space) and centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  On the September release date, the pic will open opposite the dancing film Battle of the Year and the Aaron Eckhart-led action horror adaptation I, Frankenstein.

Alexa Vega goes from Spy Kid to Killjoy in her latest picture, Machete Kills.  The sequel, directed by Robert Rodriguez, features the return of the titular ex-Federale (Danny Trejo) as he attempts to stop a gang of arms-dealing terrorists.  Vega’s character, Killjoy, is a hitwoman she describes as “a bodyguard of a whorehoues.”  Vega recently talked at length about her character and embracing her sexuality.  We got our first glimpse of Vega in this black-and-white image from the picture that proved the starlet had grown up.  Now, we have a new full-color image of Vega as Killjoy that’s even more revealing.

A double-barrel of good news on the Machete Kills front, as the Robert Rodriguez-directed and Danny Trejo-starring sequel has been picked up for North American distribution in 2013 by Open Road Films and has released its first official image!  The second installment in a planned trilogy features Trejo as the former Mexican federale out to stop a madman and a billionaire arms dealer from unleashing war across the globe.

The career paths of child stars can either end up as inspiring success stories or engrossing train wrecks.  There appears to be no rhyme or reason as to how an individual will handle the fame as they mature, but Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) seems ready to complete her transition into adulthood.  After having recently turned 24, Vega is far from adolescence, but is just now preparing to take on a role that centers on her sexuality.  Starring as KillJoy in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, Vega surprised her fans and co-workers alike with how far her new character is willing to go.  Hit the jump to see what she had to say about her risque role and embracing her sexuality.

• An official poster for The Sessions from writer/director Ben Lewin.  The Sundance 2012 Audience Award Winner stars John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy.  Look for it in theaters starting October 26th.

We have a few new casting additions to share with you today.  Here they are in brief:

• Vanessa Hudgens (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) is the latest addition to Machete Kills, the sequel  directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Danny Trejo.
• William Hurt (The Incredible Hulk) will join Akiva Goldsman’s directorial debut, Winter’s Tale.  The adaptation of the Mark Helprin novel stars Colin Farrell and Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay.
• Margo Martindale (Million Dollar Baby) joins the family in August: Osage County, based on the Tracy Letts play and starring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Chris Cooper.

Filming is currently underway on Robert Rodriguez‘ Machete Kills, and the TV show Extra got to visit the set.  They sat down with the director, and one of the film’s many stars, Mel Gibson.  Gibson plays the movie’s villain, a dangerous arms dealer who is threatening the U.S. with nuclear attacks.   In the fluff-piece interview with Extra, Gibson said he only spent a week filming his entire role, and his character is “an evil genius, kind of like a Bond villain, but also a gourmet chef.”

Robert Rodriguez is finally getting to two projects this summer that he’s long-promised were on the way: Machete Kills and Sin City 2.  He’s been filming the Machete follow-up first, and today he revealed a piece of casting in grand fashion by tweeting a character poster for a woman named Le Chameleon, played by Lady Gaga.  Rodriguez’s full tweet reads like this:

I just finished working with @LadyGaga on @MacheteKills , she kicked SO MUCH ASS! Holy Smokes. Blown away!

The sequel finds the titular star, an ex-Federale played by Danny Trejo, receiving a request from the President himself to take down a dangerous drug lord who is threatening the U.S. with nuclear attacks (obviously).  The eclectic, and quite possibly volatile, cast includes Jessica Alba, Edward James Olmos, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Demian Bichir, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, and Charlie Sheen.  Yep, Lady Gaga fits right in.  Hit the jump to take a gander at her poster, and also to get a look at Spy Kids star Alexa Vega, um, in character for Machete Kills. It’s an all-ladies casting call today.  Here’s what you need to know:

• The Avellan Twins (Electra and Elise) are set to reprise their roles from Machete in the sequel, Machete Kills. Their uncle, Robert Rodriguez, directs star Danny Trejo in the follow-up.
• Cloris Leachman (Young Frankenstein) will join the Raging Bull prequel/sequel, Raging Bull 2, written and directed by Martin Guigui (Cattle Call).
• JoAnna Garcia (Reba) has joined Shawn Levy’s Interns/The Internship, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

Yesterday, we reported that Charlie Sheen would be playing the President in Robert Rodriguez‘ Machete Kills (it’s funny because Charlie Sheen is sleazy).  We also showed you a couple set photos, and now some more have found their way online courtesy of Jessica Alba‘s twitter feed.  There’s nothing revelatory about these set photos, but it looks like everyone is having a good time on set and I’m curious to see how those dancers and musicians factor into the plot.  I’m also curious to see if Machete (Danny Trejo) will be the star of his own film this time.

Who needs elections when you can just appoint Charlie Sheen to play the President of the United States of America in your movie?  That’s what director Robert Rodriguez did recently for Machete Kills, the sequel to the cult hit, Machete. The sequel finds the titular star, an ex-Federale played by Danny Trejo, receiving a request from the President himself to take down a dangerous drug lord who is threatening the U.S. with nuclear attacks.  I cannot wait to see the criminally insane Sheen take on the Presidential role (will he channel Martin Sheen’s The West Wing character?
