Marc Webb Talks about “Trickster” Peter Parker in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Taking over the Spider-Man film franchise is already a major challenge, but director Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) has to take the character back to his origins and do so in a way that distinguishes his take as different from Sam Raimi‘s.  The posters for The Amazing Spider-Man have been vaunting an “Untold Story”, and part of that is making this Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) a little darker and more realistic.  In a recent interview, Webb talked about the “trickster” aspect of the new Spider-Man and what we can expect regarding the film’s tone.

Unless you’re lucky enough to attend a sneak-peek screening of footage from The Amazing Spider-Man, you’ll have to wait another five months until the movie comes out. A lot of promotional material has been released for Marc Webb’s installment in the Spider-Man movie franchise. There was the original trailer last year, a related video game trailer and tons of images.  We’re expecting a new trailer and perhaps some viral marketing to kick in this week following the limited preview, so we thought we’d do a recap on the images we’ve collected so far. The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Denis Leary. The film opens on July 3rd. Hit the jump to check out our comprehensive image gallery, and be sure to check back here on Collider February 7th at midnight (the night of the 6th) for the debut of the new trailer.

Director Marc Webb Talks Hulu Original Series BATTLEGROUND and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN; Expect a New SPIDER-MAN Trailer in the Next Month

by Christina Radish    Posted: January 18th, 2012 at 10:06 pm

On February 14th, Hulu launches their first original scripted series, called Battleground. Executive produced by J.D. Walsh, Hagai Shaham and Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, 500 Days of Summer), the 30-minute episodes are set in the world of political campaigns in the battleground state of Wisconsin. Shot in faux documentary-style, the workplace dramedy explores the behind-the-scenes chaos of a group of campaign workers and volunteers who leave their ordinary lives for life on the campaign trail.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, EP Marc Webb talked about how he got involved with this project, the opportunities available in producing programming for Hulu, the similarities with independent filmmaking, how he enjoys telling stories that are fun and interesting, and his desire to direct episodes for Season 2. He also talked about shooting The Amazing Spider-Man with 3eality 3D rigs, and said that people can expect to see a new trailer within the next month. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

New Images from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Highlight Emma Stone and Webshooters

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 26th, 2011 at 2:54 pm

As the barrage of marketing materials from the 2012 movie season continues, we’ve got a couple of new images from Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man. We’ve seen a few of these images before and a couple are new, but all are high quality. The new images here really emphasize the teenage aspect of Webb’s take, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the (500) Days of Summer director handles the character-driven scenes. I was impressed with the chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the footage we saw at Comic-Con, and I’m hoping that permeates throughout the film.

Hit the jump to check out the images, which also include a close look at the mechanical webshooters. The film also stars Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D July 3rd, 2012.

Hi-Res Version of New THE AMAZING-SPIDER MAN Teaser Poster

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 13th, 2011 at 7:21 am

Last week, we showed you the new teaser poster for The Amazing Spider-Man.  Sony has now sent us a hi-res, un-watermarked version.  The reboot isn’t so much “The Untold Story” (Peter Parker doesn’t get bitten by a radioactive hobo) as much as “The Same Story with a New Twist”.  Director Marc Webb has promised a grittier, darker Spider-Man story, and judging from what was presented at Comic-Con, that take is basically, “With great power, comes great responsibility, but what would you do if you never had any power before?”  It’s a new way to come at the Spidey credo, and while I will always wonder what would’ve been with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, I’m willing to give Webb’s take a shot.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Sally Field, and Martin SheenThe Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on July 3, 2012.

New Teaser Poster for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN [Updated]

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 9th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

In the swirl of all this Dark Knight Rises news, a new poster for The Amazing Spider-Man has popped up online. It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from the pic, but it looks as though the marketing campaign may be gearing up in earnest (hopefully a new trailer isn’t too far behind). As for the poster, I really like it. It sets itself apart from the Sam Raimi trilogy quite nicely, and I enjoy how the spider logo comes into play. It sports that tagline “The Untold Story”, which is Sony’s way of saying “we’re doing the origin story again but it’s totally different.” I’m intrigued by Marc Webb as the director and I’m a big fan of the main cast, so I’m hoping this all comes together well.

Hit the jump to check out the poster. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, and Martin Sheen. The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on July 3rd, 2012. [We've updated the poster with the hi-res, un-watermarked version]

Sony Sets May 2, 2014 Release Date for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: August 5th, 2011 at 11:27 am

Even though Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man only recently completed filming, Sony has already gotten a jump on the sequel as they’ve dated The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for a May 2nd, 2014 release. While this seems a bit ridiculous, it makes sense. Screenwriter James Vanderbilt wrote Webb’s reboot, and this past March he was hired to pen a script for the sequel. Apparently Sony liked what they saw (in both Webb’s film and Vanderbilt’s sequel script), as they’ve gone ahead and dated the follow-up. Hit the jump for my thoughts on this move, including the studio’s plans for an inevitable trilogy.

We’ve been posting our full-scale coverage from the convention (I’m still trying to catch up on sleep), which has included a large number of interviews. Not all of the interviews are Comic-Con related, but we’ve got conversations with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, Damon Lindelof, Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Marc Webb, Steve Carell, Patrick Stewart, Don Cheadle, Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays, Nicolas Winding Refn, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Don Cheadle and Kate Beckinsale. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN to Be Released in IMAX 3D

In a bit of a no-brainer, Sony has announced that Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man will be released in IMAX 3D when it hits theaters next summer. The format is arguably the highest quality presentation currently available for film audiences, and seems a good fit for Sony’s big reboot of the franchise. Webb shot the film in 3D, and used the format to his advantage. I was present for the Comic-Con panel where they showed us the trailer fully rendered in 3D and I was quite impressed; it wasn’t too showy or in your face, and seemed to work well with the softer dialogue scenes in addition to the action sequences.

The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Rhys Ifans. You can read Matt’s full recap of the Comic-Con panel here, which includes his thoughts on the extended footage we saw as well as our first look at Ifans as The Lizard. The Amazing Spider-Man opens July 3rd, 2012. Hit the jump to read Sony’s full press release.

Comic-Con 2011: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Director Marc Webb Interview THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Comic-Con Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone Marc Webb THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN slice

If the giant posters and banners around the Gaslamp are any indication, The Amazing Spider-Man is certainly one of the big headliners at this year’s Comic-Con. Prior to the big panel in Hall H to debut footage for the fans, co-stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, along with director Marc Webb, held a press conference to discuss all things Spidey. The most striking thing that I noticed, in listening to the answers that were given, is how much of a fan Andrew Garfield is of the iconic character and how honored he is to have the role, and how fond Emma Stone is of her co-star.

During the interview, the trio talked about how Garfield was told he had landed the coveted role, what his favorite incarnations of the comics are, the tender and romantic relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in the film, what it was like to first put on the costume, and how they all knew this was a project worth doing.  Read or listen to what they had to say after the jump:

Comic-Con 2011: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Panel Recap; New Footage, The Lizard Is Revealed, More

The two biggest panels in Hall H this year are The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and The Amazing Spider-Man.  That’s not to diminish all the other films and TV shows that will be in the Hall, but we all know those are the biggest.  But Breaking Dawn is a known quantity.  When it comes to Spider-Man, folks are still struggling to understand the reboot.  The words “gritty”, “contemporary”, and “realistic” have been thrown around in regards to the film, but what does that mean?  At the film’s panel, 6500 people are waiting for director Marc Webb to provide them an answer to that question among others: How will the actors play their roles?  What can we expect from the set pieces?  How will this stand apart from Sam Raimi’s trilogy?  This panel isn’t just a chance to see the new Spider-Man in action, but to convince folks that this reboot can stand on its own.

First Trailer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

The first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man has gone online.  I’m torn between “What was the point?” and “Sigh.  This is what ‘gritty’ Spider-Man looks like.”  First off: daddy-issues.  How original.  Second, there’s not a sense of joy in any of this trailer.  I re-watched the trailer for Sam Raimi’s first film and while there’s certainly some melodrama and an emphasis on action, you also see that there’s a fun movie in there.  I’m not getting that from this trailer.  However, I am getting that director Marc Webb has probably played Mirror’s Edge.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Hopefully what I see at Comic-Con on Friday will be more encouraging.  The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, and Rhys Ifans.  The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on July 3, 2012.

One of the most anticipated panels at this year’s Comic-Con is Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man. Directed by Marc Webb, the film marks a reboot of the franchise following Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s first trilogy, and fans are eager to see how this new version of Spidey stacks up. Steve spoke with screenwriter Steve Kloves last week at length about the project, and now Webb has opened up, discussing how he plans to reinvent the character, the favoring of practical stuntwork over CGI, and the pressure of impressing audiences at this week’s Comic-Con. Comic-Con attendees are counting down the days until they get their first look at footage from The Amazing Spider-Man, but Hall H attendees won’t be too far ahead of the curve.  New images from the film will be in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly and lo-res screencaps of scans from the magazine have gone online (it’s like low-resolution squared).  Director Mark Webb also tells EW that “Ultimately what this movie is about is a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself. And that’s a Spider-Man story we haven’t seen before,” which is true.  We’ve just seen that story in plenty of other movies before.

SHH reports that the first trailer for the film will be attached to some prints of Captain America: The First Avenger and that the trailer will run 2 minutes and 30 seconds.  Hit the jump to check out the lo-res images and the EW cover.  Click here for Steve’s recent interview with screenwriter Steve Kloves.  The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Rhys Ifans.  The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on July 3, 2012.
