HBO’s Game of Thrones comes at an interesting time in geekdom, and its success speaks to the barriers that have been broken. Though fantasy and science fiction have often been popular cinematically, on television it’s been stuck in a Stargate-esque ghetto. But now we’ve got one of the most thoughtful shows currently on air on one of the most prestigious networks that also happens to be about dragons and swordplay. Perhaps the better arbiter of what crosses over to the mainstream and what doesn’t is quality, and Game of Thrones is definitely an engrossing show even for those who’ve never picked up a twenty sided die. Sean Bean, Lena Headey, Mark Addy and Peter Dinklage lead a mostly British cast in a tale about warring families in a fantastical middle age. Our review of Game of Thrones on DVD follows after the jump.

The cast also includes Mark Addy, Lena Headey, Harry Lloyd, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jennifer Ehle and Peter Dinklage. by     Posted 2 years, 116 days ago

HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones is promising to be unlike anything else on TV.  While there have been TV shows that take place in a fantasy realm, Thrones looks like it will have a scope far beyond sword-fighting in a forest and not using contractions.  HBO has released a new preview of the show that takes a look at the setting and the various lands and environs the characters inhabit.  After watching this preview, I couldn’t help but wonder how this information will be introduced organically into the show.

Now that we finally know the series will premiere on April 17th, the spring can’t get here soon enough. We’ve already seen a short trailer for the forthcoming epic series Game of Thrones on HBO, but it was little more than a tease. A couple other trailers have since surfaced on HBO, but with roughly the same amount of footage and little-to-no-dialogue. Now HBO has released an all-new trailer which finally gives us a better idea of the story and style behind the adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series A Song of Fire and Ice. ROBIN HOOD Trailer #3 – Universal Ramps up the Action

by     Posted 3 years, 40 days ago

Universal Pictures has released a third trailer for director Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood that’s sole purpose is to sell you on the action.  Using fast cuts and minimal dialogue, this short minute something trailer doesn’t waste any of its time trying to sell you on the story.  Instead, it’s only focus is to let you know the people behind Gladiator have made another movie. And it works.

I caught a screening last week and liked the movie a lot more than some of my peers.  But…I will say there is a scene towards the end that plays like a studio note or the manager of one of the main cast said, “wouldn’t it be great if…” and they put it in the movie.  The scene makes no sense and it’s really bad.  Not bad enough for me to say don’t see Robin Hood.  It’s just a shame the scene made the final cut as the rest of the movie worked.  It’s not as good as Gladiator, but it’s worth seeing.
