Mondo Unveils Incredible Posters for MAN OF STEEL by Martin Ansin and Ken Taylor

by     Posted 8 days ago

If you’re a fan of Mondo posters but always fail at landing something on the drop (the term for when a poster is made available to purchase), I’ve got some fantastic news for you.  Mondo is releasing some incredible posters by Ken Taylor and Martin Ansin for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, and one of them is being offered as a timed release!  That means you’ll have three days to purchase the poster.  The last time they offered a timed release was Olly Moss‘ poster for The Dark Knight Rises last summer and they sold almost ten thousand.  I fully expect the Ansin poster to sell double that.  Not only because the poster is one of the best that Mondo has ever released, but also because after you see the movie this weekend, you’ll absolutely want to hang it on your wall.

As I’ve said many times on Twitter, Man of Steel is one of the best superhero films I’ve ever seen and easily one of the best films of the year.  Hit the jump to check out the incredible posters and for more info on how to buy them.

Mondo’s IRON MAN 3 Posters by Martin Ansin and Phantom City Creative

It was almost a sure-thing that Mondo would be whipping up some posters for Iron Man 3.  The Alamo Drafthouse’s art boutique has provided posters for Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and now they’ve got some beauties for Shane Black‘s upcoming third installment.  Phantom City Creative has provided a poster showing off the many armors of the new movie, and I really like the schematic design and level of detail.  There’s also a regular and variant poster from artist Martin Ansin.  It’s reminiscent of his Looper poster in how it how cuts together different images and hues inside and across multiple boundaries.

Hit the jump for sizes and pricing on the posters.  The posters will be available at a random time on Friday, so keep an eye on @MondoNews for the announcement.  Iron Man 3 opens in 3D on May 3rd.

Are we in the middle of Mondo’s busiest week ever?  It’s certainly starting to feel that way.  For the past 24 hours, new announcements have dropped with clockwork regularity, revealing new prints from Limited Paper-favored artists like Martin Ansin, Ken Taylor, and JC Richards, and most of that is on top of the heavily-hyped, sure-to-be-awesome, in-all-likelihood-record-selling Stout & Taylor show opening at the Mondo Gallery on Friday evening.  What do these prints look like, when can you get ‘em, and what can you expect in the way of coverage from Limited Paper over the next few days?  Find out after the jump, folks.

Limited Paper Video: Walking Tour of Mondo’s IN PROGRESS Gallery Show [Updated With Pics]

Mondo-In-Progress-gallery-show-slice

Before Mondo opened up the doors on In Progress (its first Mondo Gallery show of 2013), no one wondered about which movies would be covered by the show’s artists:  every piece of In Progress was based on previously-released Mondo works, so there’d be no surprises (or so we thought).  And no one was wondering about the quality of the artists themselves, because any lineup that includes Martin Ansin, Ken Taylor, Laurent Durieux, Jock, Jay Ryan, and Aaron Horkey is a lineup worth paying attention to.

Indeed, In Progress sounded awesome.  But there was one lingering question that seemed to be on everyone’s mind:  how much were these pieces going to cost?  Find out the answer to that question—and any other lingering questions you might have—after the jump.

Update: We’ve added some pictures from the show after the videos.

Limited Paper: We Pick 2012’s Top 5 Posters and Name the Year’s “Most Vital Artist”

Because—as we all know—the appreciation of any piece of artwork is subjective, Limited Paper totally recognizes that the series we’ve been running this week (The Top 20 Posters of 2012) might be the most pointless thing we’ve ever spent a serious amount of time considering, but I’ll be damned if it hasn’t been a tremendous amount of fun:  the first two parts of our list (part one here and part two here) resulted in some of the most enjoyable, friendly debates that Limited Paper’s had via email all year.  Yes, it’s pointless to “rank” art, but as the saying (I just made up) goes, “If there’s one thing collectors love doing more than collecting, it’s debating about the things they collect.”

Today, we’re here to pull double-duty:  first, we’re going to finish off our Top 20 Posters of 2012 list by naming the year’s five best prints…and then we’re gonna tell you which artist we thought was the year’s “Most Vital”.  Wanna find out who made the cut?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

To those just joining the poster-collecting community (a nice way of saying, “For those who have recently contracted the crippling disease known as poster addiction”), 2012 must have seemed like a pretty cool year.  But for those of us who’ve been at this game for longer than we’d care to admit, however, 2012 wasn’t just “pretty cool”:  it was a year awash in amazing artwork, a twelve-month stretch that (if anything) provided too many choices for the kind of people who like covering their walls with movie-themed screenprints.  There were so many great posters this year, in fact, that the idea of one person “ranking” them or “picking the best of the best” is—at best—foolhardy.

Which is why Limited Paper turned to a select group of poster enthusiasts—collectors, artists, and personalities within the poster-industry—to get a group vote going on the matter.  We came up with our picks for the 20 best posters of the year, the first half of which can be found after the jump.

Limited Paper: Mondo Releases the Next Wave of UNIVERSAL MONSTER Posters from Their Gallery Show, MASS EFFECT 2 Gets a Sweet Poster and More!

Although things were quiet on the Limited Paper front this week, one shouldn’t assume that it’s been quiet all over in Poster World:  in truth, things are just as busy as they were throughout October…it’s just that many things have been going down behind the scenes.  Indeed, there’s reason to believe—whether you’re a casual collector, a frothing-at-the-mouth true believer who feel s compelled  to buy everything, or if you’re just now making the decision to get into the absurdly entertaining hobby of print-collecting—that the rest of 2012 is gonna be (to quote former first lady Nancy Reagan) “absotively redonkulous up in hurr, bitches”.

But let’s not dwell on what may or may not be happening in the weeks ahead:  instead, let’s focus on what’s happening in the immediate future.   Wanna know when you can get a crack at the remaining prints that didn’t sell out at Mondo’s Universal Monsters Gallery show?  Are you a Mass Effect fan looking to prove your love for that franchise via the purchase and display of fancy-colored paper?  Wanna another head’s up regarding Limited Paper’s next giveaway?  It’s all after the jump, folks.

Last night, after a months of speculation (and—for those that slept outside the Mondo Gallery in anticipation of the event—after a few restless nights on the sidewalk lining 41st and Guadalupe in downtown Austin, TX) the good folks at Mondo finally opened the doors on their Universal Monsters Gallery show.  With nearly 20 new prints on sale, over 50 original pieces of artwork, and surprise appearances from legendary poster artist Drew Struzan and Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont, the show was a smash success.

Wanna see some images from the show and hear what Limited Paper thought about the whole thing?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

by     Posted 266 days ago

We’ve got quite a bit to get to in today’s Limited Paper, folks, and with Fantastic Fest 2012 still in full-swing, we don’t have a lot of time to get through it.  In today’s writeup, we chat with frequent Mondo artist Tom Whalen (who has a brand-new, 80’s-themed gallery show co-headlined by Dave Perillo opening this Friday);  we tell you when you can expect to learn and see more of Tyler Stout’s line of Mondo t-shirts (yup:  incoming Stout interview!);  and we take a look at all the Fantastic Fest posters Mondo is preparing to drop online tomorrow afternoon.

Yes, today’s Limited Paper is a spring-loaded, jam-packed, all-singing, all-dancing, primed-to-explode-directly-into-your-terrified-face  extravaganza of awesome.  See it all after the jump, folks.

Ever since Comic-Con 2012 kicked off this past Wednesday, the word ‘round the campfire has been that Mondo’s biggest release—the one everyone would be talking about after the Con, the one that everyone was going to be determined to get their hands on, the one print to rule them all—would be dropping on Saturday night.   There didn’t seem to be any concrete info to support this suspicion, but that didn’t keep poster-nerds the world over from repeating it whenever they got the chance.  And ya know what?  Even though limited-paper enthusiasts are generally 5/10 when it comes to predicting drops, they were absolutely right about tonight’s release of Mondo’s The Dark Knight Rises print by Olly Moss.

Read all about that—and the rest of Mondo’s Saturday-at-Comic-Con output—after the jump.

Chalk up another great license acquisition for Mondo.  The Alamo Drafthouse’s art boutique has picked up the rights to make limited edition posters based off HBO’s Game of Thrones.  Fan-favorite artists Martin Ansin, Vania Zouravliov, and Daniel Danger have designed posters for the series, and their posters will be on sale at the Mondo booth (#437) this week at the San Diego Comic-Con.  So if you’re in the 400 aisle on the exhibitors floor, and you hear screaming and clawing, you’ll know where it came from.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The posters will drop at random times during Comic-Con.  We currently don’t know the size of the posters, how much they’ll cost, or the edition size.  The Game of Thrones panel will be this Friday at 2:45pm in Hall H. [Update: We've updated the article with higher-resolution versions of the posters as well as sizing, pricing, and edition info.]

If you’re just joining us here at poster-enthusiast HQ, Limited Paper is an ongoing column keeping you up to date on all poster-related shenanigans from around the world (but mostly the States).  For the past few weeks, we’ve been running Limited Paper as a weekly column, a once-per-seven-days affair packed to the breaking point with pictures, poster drop news, speculation, and “Things Worth Getting Excited About”.  This week, we’re rolling out a new version of Limited Paper (yes, already), and what better way to ring in that new version than some extremely exciting RAYGUNS & ROBOTS news?  Not doing it for ya?  Then how about some new Martin Ansin posters?  Sound good?  Meet me after the jump.

Limited Paper #1: Posters from Gallery 1988, Mondo, Dark Hall Mansion and Tom Whalen, Rhys Cooper, Phone Booth, Drafthouse and More

by     Posted 1 year, 20 days ago

As you’ve probably noticed, movie-poster collecting has turned into a Ron Burgundy-sized “Big Deal” over the past few years:  everywhere you look, brilliantly talented artists like Martin Ansin, Tyler Stout, and Olly Moss are joining forces with places like Gallery 1988, IAm8Bit, and the newly-opened Mondo Gallery to create collectible, gorgeously-rendered works of art based on your favorite movies and TV shows, and every time one of these posters drops…a poster-collector is born.

And where do we–the die-hard paper-geeks of the world– go for our news?  For our drop announcements?  For interviews with our favorite artists?  For reckless rumor-mongering about upcoming events?  One or two dark corners of the internet might traffic in the kind of information collectors crave, but we think we can streamline that process a bit (and even if we fail, it is an excuse to ramble on about posters for the umpteenth time, and we never get tired of that).  Wanna see what we’ve put together?  Check out Limited Paper #1 after the jump, folks.

Mondo Unveils AVENGERS Posters for Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk

Last week, Mondo unveiled two stunning Avengers posters for Black Widow and Hawkeye.  Mondo, the collectible boutique arm of the Alamo Drafthouse, has assembled (zing!) a series of posters that tie into Marvel’s all-star superhero pic, and today they’ve unveiled posters for Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk.  My personal favorites of the bunch are either Hulk or Iron Man, though the glow-in-the-dark variant of Thor is pretty damn gorgeous.  Frankly, there’s not a bad one in the whole batch.

Hit the jump to check out the posters, and then seethe with envy of those who’ll be able to get their hands on them.  Captain America and Hulk will go on sale at a random time tomorrow (Thursday), while Thor and Iron Man will go on sale on Friday.  If you thought it was hard to get your hands on a Mondo poster before, I can’t even imagine how quickly your fingers will have to move in order to nab one of these.  As always, follow @MondoNews for on sale announcements.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.
