After the first red-band trailer debuted earlier this week, a new green-band trailer for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg‘s This Is the End is now available.  The film definitely looks funny, but I’m wondering how long the premise of celebrity-self-parody can last.  Usually, this kind of performance is a cameo, but This Is the End is all about Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, and Craig Robinson playing “versions” of themselves.  I’m assuming that as long as the quips and jokes keep coming as quickly as they do in this trailer, then the self-parody won’t wear out its welcome.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Jason Segel, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Mindy Kaling, Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, Martin Starr, and more.  This Is the End opens June 12th.

Sundance 2013: THE LIFEGUARD Review

You can go home again, but you probably shouldn’t.  Sometimes, when backed into a corner, we have no choice to retreat in order to regroup, but there’s hardly anything rejuvenating about crawling under the covers in your old bedroom.  Liz A. Garcia‘s The Lifeguard indulges its childish main character’s wish fulfillment as a deranged kind of emotional growth where the protagonist can make hypocritical statements to a kid that doesn’t know any better.  The only real attempt at character development comes from a desperate dramatic ploy in the film’s final ten minutes that closes out this deluded coming-of-age tale.

I’m currently at the Sundance Film Festival, and while I’ll be seeing plenty of movies, I’ll only be seeing features.  Sadly, it’s the nature of the scheduling, but I’m glad to report that Sundance has put 12 of their 65 short films on YouTube.  Among the selections are Broken Night by Babel writer Guillermo Arriga, and the comedy The Apocalypse starring Martin Starr.  I’ve only watched a few of the shorts, and they’re all pretty dark and twisted, so if that’s your thing, these are worth twenty minutes of your day.

Hit the jump to check out some of the short films.  The 2013 Sundance Film Festival runs from today to January 27th.

The first clip and poster for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg‘s directorial debut, the apocalypse comedy This Is the End, has been released online.  It’s perfect timing, as tomorrow may or may not be the end of the world as we know it, so keep in mind that this could be the only piece of footage from This Is the End that your eyes will see before an unholy Mayan apocalypse engulfs us all.  It’d be a shame if the world did end tomorrow, though, because This Is the End looks fantastic.  Rogen, Jay BaruchelJames Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride all play themselves in the aftermath of the apocalypse to hilarious results, with plenty of self-referential comedy to go around.  McBride in particular is excellent in this clip, and if this is any indication of what the full film is like, then This Is the End will be the must-see comedy of next summer.

Hit the jump to watch the clip which features a timely introduction by Rogen and Franco, and to check out the film’s poster and a new image.  The film also stars Jason Segel, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, David KrumholtzPaul Rudd, Martin Starr, Mindy Kaling, Kevin Hart, and Rihanna.  This Is the End opens on June 14, 2013.

See the Entire FREAKS AND GEEKS Cast Reunited

The longevity of Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s short-lived 1999 series Freaks and Geeks is both astounding and ironic.  The show was ahead of its time and faced considerable opposition from its home network, NBC, throughout its one-season run.  Over the years, though, Freaks and Geeks has amassed a legion of fans and acted as the launching pad for countless careers.  The main cast of James Franco, Jason Segel, and Seth Rogen now reads like an all-star comedy lineup, not to mention the ridiculous number of stars that had bit parts in the series like Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman, Shia LaBeouf, Ben Foster, Lizzy Caplan, and David Krumholtz.

Most of the show’s cast came together for a reunion at PaleyFest last year, but for the upcoming comedy issue of Vanity Fair (guest edited by Apatow), the entire cast and crew was assembled for “An Oral History of Freaks and Geeks.”  In addition to the fascinating article itself, VF has released a number of cast reunion images.  Hit the jump to take a look.

The first trailer and poster have gone online for director Michael Mohan’s romantic comedy, Save the Date.  Starring Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) and Alison Brie (Community) as sisters with drastically different views on marriage, Save the Date explores the familial and romantic bonds that tie us together and what happens when they break apart.  The trailer suggests that Save the Date might be just the right movie for those of you who despise typical, trite rom-coms with predictably nauseating endings.  It also suggests that it’s a movie to avoid if you despise hipsters.

Save the Date also stars Geoffrey Arend, Martin Starr and Mark Webber and will be available on a variety of online platforms starting November 8th, with a theatrical release beginning December 14th.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster and synopsis.

You’re driving down the street, and it’s suddenly blocked off.  You notice these weird yellow signs with nonsensical letters or numbers.  There’s unusual glow lighting up a neighborhood you can’t usually see from your house.  What you might have here is a film company shooting in your town.  It happens a lot, and you never know where they might pop up…until now.

The following is a semi-comprehensive list of films currently shooting, what they’re shooting, and where they’re shooting.  We’ll be telling you where you might get to see the very famous, the kinda famous and (if all goes well) the soon-to-be famous. While we can’t list every single movie, television show, or student film in production, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what the heck is going on where all those people are buzzing about.  Want to know where in the world are Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Harrelson, and Leonardo DiCaprio? Dating is complicated enough. But, getting answers about your love life today from your older, wiser self, 10 years in the future, would certainly make you stop and re-evaluate. In the new web series Dating Rules From My Future Self , Lucy Lambert (Shiri Appleby) has a secure job, great friends and a longtime boyfriend who has just popped the question. The trouble is, deep down, she knows he’s not the one. So, with her future self using an app to send her helpful little texts, Lucy could finally be headed towards the future of her dreams.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Shiri Appleby (Life Unexpected, Roswell) talked about how this web series came about, how she ended up signing on for her first gig as producer, how she can’t wait to try her hand at directing, assembling such an amazing cast (including Taylor Kinney, Bryce Johnson, Mircea Monroe and Martin Starr), and shooting the entire series in 10 days, with exactly the same approach as a regular TV show. She also talked about her role in White Trash Christmas, starring Taryn Manning, and said that she’d love to do more comedies, take on some darker indie roles, and get the chance to play Natalie Wood. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Collider Goes to the PARTY DOWN Marathon Hosted by the Alamo Drafthouse; Plus Cast Interview

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:  if there’s a reason to live in Texas, it’s Tim League’s Alamo Drafthouse chain, a collection of theaters that make every other big-ass theater chain currently operating in America feel like the shantytowns they are. Whereas most theater chains only screen new movies (and, perhaps, Rocky Horror on Saturday nights), the Drafthouse also offers up elaborate film- and TV-geek friendly events…in addition to a full bar.

Their latest event?  A Party Down marathon that unfolded last weekend across two different parties and one Drafthouse theater.  While the entire series screened for the assembled crowd, the cast and crew (including series creator Rob Thomas) was on-hand to talk about their pre-Party Down careers, the potential for a Party Down movie, and the best way to watch Party Down now that it’s been cancelled.  Read on for our report from the front lines, after the jump.

American Pie stars Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, and Shannon Elizabeth all promptly signed on to return for American Reunion, the third Pie sequel.  Makes sense: those kids came off the surprise hit with serious heat in 1999, but none has achieved the true stardom that seemed within reach.  Writer/directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) added a few new faces to the mix, including Dania Ramirez and Katrina Bowden.  According to Variety, Chuck Hittinger (Pretty Little Liars) will represent the new male blood at the East Great Falls High School class reunion.  Hittinger plays Marco, “a jock and a bully who takes his girlfriend for granted.”  Production is currently underway in Atlanta for an April 6, 2012 release.

A 10-Year FREAKS AND GEEKS Reunion Might Hit PaleyFest 2011

Fans of Judd Apatow who knew his name well before The 40 Year-Old Virgin hit theaters in 2005 should hold onto their hats. Variety is reporting, though unofficially, that a 10-year reunion for the cast of Freaks and Geeks — the coming-of-age high school series that survived only one season from the year 2000 — will be staged for an event at PaleyFest 2011. Apparently Apatow revealed the reunion through his Twitter over the weekend and the Paley Center has since confirmed the fact that a Q&A with the cast and producers is definitely in the cards. The official announcement regarding the TV festival won’t hit until next week, but this sounds like a done deal.

Since many of the series stars like Seth Rogen, Jason Segel and James Franco have since catapulted into stardom this should be quite the reunion. Other cast members include Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, Samm Levine and Busy Phillips, and surely they’ll be along for the reunion too. I’m wondering if they’ll get Shia LaBeouf or Rashida Jones involved since they each had bit parts in a few episodes back in the day. Either way, this will be an event you don’t want to miss, so if you have the means, make sure you make it to PaleyFest 2011.

6 MONTH RULE – 3 “Rule” Clips from Blayne Weaver’s Next Movie

by     Posted: May 10th, 2010 at 9:28 am

Tyler Watts lives by certain rules. The most important is the “6 Month Rule” which states that there is no woman you can’t get over in six months. When his best friend gets dumped, Tyler takes him under his wing and sets out to teach him the rules of being single.  As he educates his reluctant pupil, Tyler meets a girl who makes him question everything he thinks he knows.

That’s the official synopsis for Blayne Weaver’s (Weather Girl) new film 6 Month Rule.  Starring Weaver, Jaime Pressly, Martin Starr, Dave Foley, John Michael Higgins, Natalie Morales, Patrick J. Adams and Vanessa Branch, the movie wrapped about two months ago and they’re aiming to premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.  Like the synopsis says, the movie is about a womanizer who enjoys being single and avoiding emotional attachment.

While they haven’t yet released a trailer, we’ve been given 3 “rule” clips to premiere.  Each one is about 6-8 seconds and they’re all together in one video.  Check them out after the jump:

ADVENTURELAND Blu-ray Review

by     Posted: August 28th, 2009 at 10:00 am

Adventureland movie image slice.jpg

It’s a fairly standard narrative. A filmmaker surrogate falls in love for the first time. Recently it was done in The Wackness. The main character (generally nerdy) meets a girl with some experience who trains him in the ways of love. She may or may not stick around, and the context is often a location that is familiar to the author. It’s fair to say that both the best and worst advice to give an aspiring writer is to write what they know. And yet, as familiar as this material can be, Greg Mottola’s Adventureland is nuanced, and it gets its characters. My review after the jump.
