Dimension Films has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the Canadian production The Black MarksKurt Russell, Matt Dillon and Jay Baruchel star in the heist comedy about “a third rate motorcycle daredevil (Russell) and semi-reformed art thief, [who] agrees to get back into the con game and pull off just one more lucrative art theft with his untrustworthy brother Nicky (Dillon).”  I love a good heist film, and Russell as an oddball at the center sounds delightful.

Jonathan Sobol will write and direct—this is the follow-up to his debut feature A Beginner’s Guide to EndingsNicholas Tabarrok and Jeff Sackman are producing.  Hit the jump for the full synopsis:

Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon to Star in SUNLIGHT, JR.

Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon will star in the independent film Sunlight Jr. Written and directed by Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby), the movie follows convenience store clerk Melissa (Watts) and her paraplegic boyfriend, Richie (Dillon).  The two “are trapped in a generational cycle of poverty and ignorance. They are genuinely excited when they learn that Melissa is pregnant. But when she loses her job and they are evicted from the motel where they live, things go from bad to worse.”  The press release doesn’t say whether or not the film is a dark comedy or an overwrought, depressing-as-hell drama.  If it turns out to be a drama, the premise sound like it could end up veering into darkly comic territory anyway, but it would be unintentional.

Hit the jump for the press release.  Watts will next be seen in Clint Eastwood‘s J. Edgar, and Dillon is set to co-star in Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep.

We have a couple quick casting stories to report this morning.  First up, rising star Brit Marling (Another Earth) has chosen between Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep and the Tom Cruise action flick One Shot and cast her lot with the former.  Variety reports that Marling will co-star with Redford and Shia LaBeouf in the flick which centers on a former Weather Underground militant (Redford) who goes on the run when his identity is revealed by an ambitious reporter (LaBeouf).  Nick Nolte will also star in the flick but there’s no word on what role he or Marling will play.  Marling is also committed to reunite with her Sound of My Voice director Zal Batmanglij for the thriller The East.

In other casting news, Matt Dillon will join Kristen Wiig and Annette Bening in Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s Imogene.  Wiig plays a playwright who fakes suicide in order to win back her ex but ends up in the custody of her Jersey Shore-esque mother (Bening).  Deadline reports that Dillon will play Bening’s love interest and “he claims to be in the CIA, but his behavior suggests he just might be crazy.”

Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson Set for FREAKY DEAKY

A trio of actors have signed on for Charles Matthau’s (The Grass Harp) adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Freaky Deaky. Variety reports that Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson will star in the Hollywood-centered crime flick. Dillon will star as an LAPD bomb squad officer who happens upon a plot hatched by two hippies who plan to scam a movie mogul using their bomb-making skills. Fraser plays a former activist who now puts his bomb-knowledge to work as a Hollywood pyrotechnics and demolition expert, and Robinson is poised to play a former Black Panther who now serves as the assistant to Fraser’s character.

In pitch-perfect casting, William H. Macy is already set to star as the alcoholic Hollywood mogul that the two hippie characters attempt to scam. The other day we heard that Sienna Miller may be starring in the film, but she wasn’t mentioned in Variety’s report today. Matthau will direct, and adapted Leonard’s novel himself. The film version will take place in 1974 instead of Leonard’s late 80’s setting of the book. While Fraser is used to starring in what can mildly be described as horseshit as of late, the other actors involved sound promising. It’ll be interesting to see who Matthau gets to fill out the rest of his cast. Production is set to start this summer in Michigan. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of Leonard’s book.

Stephen Dorff Replaces Matt Dillon in BOOT TRACKS

Stephen Dorff (Blade) will replace Matt Dillon as the male lead in director David Jacobson’s (Down in the Valley) indie flick Boot Tracks. Dorff will star alongside Ray Winstone and Michelle Monaghan in the adaptation of the Matthew F. Jones novel of the same name. In his new role, Dorff plays Charlie Rankin, an ex-con who has a fling with a former porn star (Monaghan) before setting off to complete his task: an honor-killing at the behest of a fellow inmate known as “Buddha” (Winstone), who kept Rankin relatively safe in prison in exchange for all manor of favors.

Variety originally reported that Dorff would be replacing Dillon in Boot Tracks, but did not mention any specific reasons. The actor can next be seen as Dick Shadow in this year’s Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, where he follows in his parents’ footsteps and becomes a porn star. In two movies that probably have nothing to do with porn, you can also find the Blade villain in Tarsem Singh’s Immortals and 2012′s Officer Down. As for Winstone, the actor has quite a busy year ahead of him, but perhaps his most interesting project of note will be Hugo Cabret where he reteams with Departed director, Martin Scorsese. Michelle Monaghan, from this year’s Source Code, can be seen opposite Gerard Butler in this fall’s Machine Gun Preacher. Finally, for more on Boot Tracks, hit the jump to check out a synopsis of Jones’ novel.

Mike Figgis to Direct SECONDS OF HAPPINESS; Christina Hendricks, Julia Stiles, and Matt Dillon Join Cast

Director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) has stepped in to replace Neil LaBute in an adaptation of LaBute’s collection of short stories, Seconds of Happiness.  The frame of the narrative takes place on an airplane and examines the interconnecting lives of various passengers through vignettes.  Clearly, this will be just like LostDeadline also reports that Brendan Fraser and Kristen Scott Thomas will be joined by Christina Hendricks, Julia Stiles, and Matt Dillon.  Hendricks will play a woman who catches her husband (Fraser) in a “compromising position.”  Because I’ve never read LaBute’s book but have seen every episode of Lost, I imagine Fraser’s position has something to do with pushing a button every 108 minutes.  LaBute is still on board to produce and shooting is expected to begin this summer.

Hendricks recently signed on to star in the ensemble comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It while Dillon is attached to co-star in Roman Polanski’s God of Carnage and Matthew Weiner’s You Are Here.  Stiles recently co-starred on Showtime’s Dexter.   Hit the jump for the synopsis of Seconds of Pleasure.

Fresh off an unsurprisingly stellar season four of AMC’s hit show Mad Men, creator/head writer/director/all-knowing-Oz Matthew Weiner is currently busy casting his feature film debut, the romantic dramedy You Are Here. Pajiba reports that Jack Black, Matt Dillon, and Renée Zellweger are currently attached to star, and with an offer out to Rachel McAdams to join the cast as well.

Last year, we reported that Weiner was looking to cast Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper, and Zach Galifianakis in the project.  However, when the film didn’t materialize as fast as Weiner was hoping, filming was pushed back to this year in lieu of scheduling issues with the filming of Mad Men.  It looks like Weiner has chosen the current hiatus between seasons four and five to get the project back on track.  For more on the film, including a plot description and which characters each actor will play, hit the jump.

Roman Polanski is lining up a terrific cast for his adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play God of CarnageDeadline reports that Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, and Matt Dillon have signed on to star in the drama.  Per Deadline, “God of Carnage tells the story of two sets of parents who meet after their sons are involved in a schoolyard fight. The meeting goes disastrously wrong as each pair attacks the other’s parenting skills before turning on each other about problems in their own marriages.”  Remember kids: if you get into fight in the schoolyard, you’re probably going to break up your parents.

Foster is currently in the unenviable position of defending Mel Gibson as he stars in her first directorial feature in 15 years, The Beaver.  Winslet will next be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion and the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce.  Waltz is currently shooting on Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers and will next be seen in Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet and Francis Lawrence’s Water for Elephants.  Dillon most recently co-starred in Takers.

ARMORED Blu-ray Review

In theory, Armored should be an awesome movie. The idea of a bunch of security guards robbing their own armored truck sounds like a bad ass heist film. Just the premise gets the mind racing. What’s the plan? How do they plan on getting away with it? Unfortunately, the reality of Armored doesn’t touch on either of those things. Instead we’re left with an original idea told without original thought. And the Blu-ray is just more of the same. Read more after the jump.

5 Movie Clips from ARMORED

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 2nd, 2009 at 6:54 pm

armored_movie_image_laurence_fishburne_and_matt_dillon.jpgArmored may not a blockbuster extravaganza filled with Hollywood’s biggest stars, but from what I’ve seen, it looks like a tight little action-thriller and that’s good enough for me.  I am hoping it’s good because you don’t want this film to be a travesty and then face the fact that director Nimrod Antal is going to be making Predators.  Still, I have faith and hopefully these five new clips from the film will inspire some faith in you as well.

Hit the jump to check out the clips along with a brief synopsis.  Armored hits theaters on December 4th.

“Takers” is a film that was completely off of my radar until just now. I think I only glanced at the film’s title while doing some research through the “always reliable” IMDB and I’ve since completely forgotten about it until right now. Anyway, I don’t know if you guys are anticipating it or not, but the film now has a trailer. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s about a group of bank robbers and it stars Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Matt Dillon, Chris Brown, Jay Hernandez, T.I. , and Hayden Christensen.
