Matthew Vaughn to Direct X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel; Simon Kinberg to Write the Script

Matthew Vaughn has signed on to direct a sequel to X-Men: First Class.  According to Deadline, Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand) will write the script and Bryan Singer will return to produce.  X-Men: First Class was terrific and I’m glad that Vaughn will return for the sequel.  I’m also excited to see what he’ll do with (hopefully) a bigger budget and more production time.  It’s a little surprising that Vaughn’s frequent collaborator Jane Goldman hasn’t signed on to pen the screenplay, but it’s possible that she’ll come on board later in the process.

Now we can let the speculation begin about what the sequel holds in store.  Vaughn said in May that he would like the second movie would open with the JFK assassination and Magneto controlling the “magic bullet”.  Indulging conspiracy theorists aside, I’m curious to see which new mutants will the fray.  If the movie is set in 1963, it’s probably too early to see Cyclops and Jean Grey kicking around Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

Michael Fassbender Talks X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel

With A Dangerous Method hitting theaters on November 23rd and the NC-17 rated Shame opening on December 2nd, Michael Fassbender is busy promoting both films and his truly excellent performances in each. Although very different films, they each explore themes of sex and sexuality, and what is culturally accepted behavior in the bedroom.

While Collider got to sit down with the ultra-busy actor to talk about those films, we’ll run the video interview closer to their release dates. However, in the meantime, we did want to share what he had to say about his return to the role of Magneto for the eventual sequel to X-Men: First Class, how he’s looking forward to working on ideas with James McAvoy and hopefully Matthew Vaughn, and that he’s interested to see how Charles Xavier turns into Professor X. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Matthew Vaughn Developing SUPERIOR and THE SECRET SERVICE

Director Matthew Vaughn surprised quite a few people when his X-Men: First Class opened and audiences found that the film was not only a lot of fun, but had a pretty great story anchored by some stellar performances. Now everyone wants to know what Vaughn will choose as his follow-up. Well it looks like Vaughn is currently developing two projects from comic writer Mark Millar. The first is The Secret Service, which was unveiled this week by Vaughn, Millar, and artist Dave Gibbons. Details on the story are under wraps but Vaughn holds the movie rights and is likely to tackle the script with Kick-Ass and First Class collaborator Jane Goldman. With that talent involved, I’m choosing to assume that the story revolves around Secret Service agents violently taking out anyone and everyone that makes a threat against the President.

Hugh Jackman Tells the Story Behind His X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Cameo

Fox’s X-Men: First Class caught quite a few people off-guard when it opened this past May.  The stories of the rushed production schedule and reshoots had many thinking that the prequel would be a mediocre popcorn flick at best.  Instead, we got a smart, taut, and entertaining period film that turned out to be one of the best superhero movies of the year.  Among the film’s many strengths were the nods to the previous entries in the X-Men franchise, including quite possibly one of the greatest cameos of the past decade: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.  The actor turns up for just a few seconds, and delivers just one line, but he gets the biggest laugh of the entire film.

Recently, Steve got the chance to sit down with the actor to talk about his upcoming pic Real Steel.  We’ll have the full interview up soon, but Jackman told a great story about how his cameo in the X-Men flick came to be. The scene was filmed at the last minute, and Jackman came up with the final version of his line himself. Hit the jump for the full story.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 2nd, 2011 at 2:05 pm

How much do we expect from superhero movies?  Do we ask that they be faithful?  Do we demand they be grittier so we can argue that they’re more mature and therefore better?  Or do we ask that they be fun, disposable entertainment?  That answer probably depends on the property, although the tone and plot of the most famous superhero comics have varied so widely over the years that there’s no single answer.  Keeping this in mind, Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class forges its own path, not just in terms of the X-Men franchise, but in the superhero genre.  The film is stylish and exhilarating, but it’s also darker, more intense, and all the better for it.

Matthew Vaughn Talks X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, Possible Sequel, JAMES BOND, and the X3 That Could Have Been

With the early reviews of director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class positively glowing, anticipation is growing even more intense for the Kick Ass director’s take on the franchise. Earlier today, Vaughn took part in a number of interviews with various publications, and contrary to most pre-release press he was actually surprisingly forthcoming. In addition to talking about First Class, Vaughn confirmed that he would definitely be willing to return for a sequel, and he even has an idea of what the opening scene would be:

“I thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto.”

That’s definitely one way to open a superhero movie. But it’s conducive to the 1960’s setting for First Class and the threading of the X-Men with other historical figures/events. To check out a roundup of some of the best (spoiler-free) quotes from Vaughn’s interviews today, including further talk about a First Class sequel, the possibility of directing a Bond film, and his version of X-Men: The Last Stand that never got made, hit the jump.

With director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class set to open next week, 20th Century Fox has sent over three clips and twenty five minutes of behind the scenes footage!  For those that want to stay spoiler free, I advise you not to watch the behind the scenes footage until you’ve seen the movie as it’s loaded with could be considered spoilers.  However, if you’re curious how a movie is made, or what it was like on the set, the footage is great.

As I said a few days ago after I saw the movie, X-Men: First Class is a huge home-run.  Everything from the great script to the awesome performances by the entire cast (with special mention to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) makes this X-Men film my favorite in the franchise.   Also, the film is loaded with incredible action and a ton of Easter Eggs for the fans.  Even the sets and costumes are great.  Trust me, as soon as the movie is over, you’re going to wish the next chapter was coming out next week.   Hit the jump to check out the footage.

Earlier today I got to watch Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class.  While we’re not allowed to write a review, we’ve been given permission to write our initial thoughts.

If you were nervous the latest chapter in the X-Men franchise might disappoint, I’m happy to report it’s a huge home-run. Hit the jump for more.

New Clips from X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and SUPER 8

Well, we’re off to the races people. Summer blockbuster season is officially upon us and the Hollywood hype machines are working at full force. Today clips from arguably the two biggest movies of June have found their way onto the internet. New scenes from X-Men: First Class and JJ Abrams’ excitingly/frustratingly mysterious Super 8 are now available online.  Both blockbusters have a great deal of potential and the new clips certainly don’t reveal anything that will dissuade viewers from that opinion, but don’t expect to see anything earth shattering. It’s pretty simple stuff cherry picked for marketing purposes. You will however get to see 30 more mysterious seconds from Super 8 as well as an early look at X-Men: First Class’ Hank McCoy (aka Beast) in action and far more Oliver Platt than was ever expected to be in an X-Men movie. These flicks are looking like they’ll be pretty damn good. Hopefully they’ll deliver on the hype unlike, say, a certain pirate-related sequel. Hit the jump to see the clips.  X-Men: First Class opens on June 3rd while Super 8 hits theaters on June 10th.

New Posters for ANONYMOUS and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

New posters have been released for Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous and Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class.  I’m having trouble deciding which is worse.  The poster for Anonymous makes it look like a person is exploding in a mess of ink and bird crap, but X-Men: First Class is continuing the proud tradition of having awful posters (but I seriously doubt anyone is going to top these).

Hit the jump to check out the posters and decide for yourself which one you’d least want on your wall.  Anonymous opens September 30th while X-Men: First Class is due out June 3rd.

New Trailer for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Fox has released a new trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class.  There’s a lot of good new footage and snippets of dialogue in this trailer. I’m still not sure how The Hellfire Club factors into the story, but I liked a lot of what the trailer has to show. We get a better look at the relationship between Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and there’s a much darker tone to the relationship between Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) as opposed to previous trailers which seemed to position Magneto more as a tragic figure. Fingers crossed that all these storylines and characters come together in a quality film.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  X-Men: First Class stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Rose Byrne, Oliver Platt, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Kevin Bacon.  The film opens June 3rd.

Fox has released a new image from Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class.  The image first appeared in Entertainment Weekly’s summer preview issue, and shows Magneto (Michael Fassbender) either trying to use his powers or squeezing one out.  It’s tough to tell without context.  Meanwhile, Professor X (James McAvoy) pulls a Ceiling Cat.

Director Matthew Vaughn Talks Sequel Plans for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 13th, 2011 at 10:46 am

We’re still six weeks away from Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, but the director is already talking up potential sequels.  Says Vaughn:

First Class is similar to Batman Begins, where you have the fun of introducing the characters and getting to know them, but that takes time. But with the second one you can just get on with it and have a rollicking good time.  That’s the main difference between Begins and The Dark Knight.”

Other main difference between Begins and TDK: better villains, bigger set pieces, and a not-completely terrible third act.  Hit the jump for more on what to expect from the First Class sequels (provided the movie is a hit).  X-Men: First Class opens June 3rd.

Awesome Fan-Made Opening Credits to X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 5th, 2011 at 3:55 pm

x-men-first-class-opening-titles-slice-01

I feel a little bad for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class because no matter what it does, it now has to compete with some incredible fan-made opening credits.  Because the upcoming prequel takes place during the 1960s, designer Joe D! used elements like Saul Bass titles along with Mod and James Bond styles to create his impressive opening titles.  I also love that the fake credits use a remixed version of the animated X-Men TV show from the 1990s.

Hit the jump to check out this brilliance.  X-Men: First Class opens June 3rd.

Russian Trailer for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

How good is this Russian trailer for X-Men: First Class?  I didn’t understand a word of it and yet I now want to see the movie even more.  There’s plenty of new footage in this trailer, and it looks like the story is more centered on Magneto (Michael Fassbender) than it is on Professor X (James McAvoy).  I have absolutely no problem with that.  And yet, I can’t help but feel that once again we’re being set up for a letdown.  It’s a feeling that has nothing to do with the quality of trailers or the footage we’ve seen so far.  It’s a feeling that comes from the one-two punch of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  X-Men: First Class also stars January Jones, Rose Byrne, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon.  It opens June 3rd.
