As I write today, in the back of mind rests more than a handful of permutations for my Black Friday plan of attack. Do I really need a new 42 inch HDTV? How about various seasons of television on DVD/Blu-ray for rock bottom prices? What about one of those sweet Dyson vacuum cleaners with the roller ball? The answer to all of the above is most likely a resounding “no”, but need isn’t what Black Friday is all about. Not even close. Black Friday is all about getting something/anything on the cheap if for no other reason than because if you don’t, then the person behind you in line will. Oh, America. How I love thee.

In this week’s “Top 5″ installment you’ll find our set visit coverage for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, our review and interviews for a little movie you may have heard about called The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, the first trailer for director Tarsem Singh’s Snow White-tale Mirror Mirror, a new trailer for Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games adaptation, and Steve’s coverage from his visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. Even though the directors of the Twilight Saga films have been different for each installment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has been a constant throughout. With the bulk of her work having ended more than a year ago, she’s already moved on to other writing and producing projects, but is also enjoying the opportunity to relive it for the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, done at the film’s press junket, Melissa Rosenberg talked about the overwhelming passion of the fans, how wonderful it was to collaborate with director Bill Condon for the final two-part installment, what went into the creative decision to turn Breaking Dawn into two films, how much fun she had as a guest at Bella and Edward’s wedding, and how much she loved getting to introduce all the new characters in Part 2, due out in November 2012. She also talked about the next feature she’s writing, called Earthseed (adapted from a young adult sci-fi novel about a strong, kick-ass young woman), and Afterthought, the NBC series that she’ll be producing. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Happy Saturday, folks. I’m writing to you this week surrounded by a mountain of used facial tissue (that’s right, I’m not endorsing Kleenex on the site without some sort of kick back…wait, dang it). Cold season has officially set in which means I’m on a daily regimen of Dayquil (which I have no problem endorsing), warm tea, and self-pity. In case you’re a longtime reader of the “Top 5″ and you’re wondering to yourself, “Wasn’t Jason just complaining about the summer heat?”, the answer is yes. Out of the 52 yearly weeks, I’m generally not complaining about the weather for approximately 2 or 3 of them. It’s sad, I know.

In this week’s “Top 5″ you can find our video interviews with the cast of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, press conferences with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and more from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 junket, the red band trailer for Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s  21 Jump Street, a sit-down with the great Albert Brooks, and our coverage to date of this year’s American Film Market. Find a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

Author Stephenie Meyer, Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and Producer Wyck Godfrey Talk THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1

Author Stephenie Meyer, Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and Producer Wyck Godfrey THE TWILIGHT SAGA BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 Video Interview

Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 release is mere days away, on November 18, and earlier today the studio held a large press junket here in Los Angeles.  While the reporters knew that screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and producer Wyck Godfrey were going to be talking today, we were all surprised when Twilight author Stephenie Meyer showed up to also talk to the press.  If you’re not aware, Meyer hasn’t done a lot of press since the first film, so it was no surprise that most of the questions were aimed at her.

During the twenty or so minute press conference, Meyer’s was asked if she would continue writing books in the Twilight universe, the differences between the books and the films, the birth scene, the decision to make Breaking Dawn into two films, her reaction to seeing the finished film, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch the video.

New Financier Comes on to HIGHLANDER Reboot; Justin Lin Still Attached; New Screenwriters Announced

RCR Media Group has sent out a press release announcing they’re co-financing the Highlander reboot with Summit Entertainment and Neal Moritz Productions.  For those unfamiliar with the premise, it’s about immortal guys called Highlanders who cut off each other’s heads until only one Highlander remains.  Then he gets a special prize and a Queen song plays.  The press release reports that Fast Five director Justin Lin is still attached, but keep in mind that his plate is filling up with other projects due to the success of Fast Five.  Not only does Universal want to hit the gas on Fast and Furious 6, but Lin is also attached to Terminator 5.  Does he want to make the first great Highlander movie (the original is campy fun, but not a great movie) or does he want to go to a film that’s likelier to succeed like Fast 6 or T5?

The press release also announces that Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) wrote the screenplay, but back in February we reported that Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg had been hired to rewrite the script that was originally penned by The Wibberleys (National Treasure) .  Neither Rosenberg nor The Wibberleys are mentioned in the press release, which you can read after the jump.

TWILIGHT Series Scribe to Write and Produce EARTHSEED Adaptation [Updated]

With the Twilight films winding down and the first movie of The Hunger Games adaptations set for 2012, studios are looking for the next franchise to bolster their revenues. Paramount has tagged Twilight series screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to write and produce an adaptation of Earthseed, a young adult sci-fi novel by Pamela Sargent. The 1983 novel revolves around children living aboard a spaceship that is traveling in search of other habitable worlds. The kids, growing up without parents, have to learn to coexist in an Earth-like simulation aboard the ship. Two sequels to Earthseed have recently been penned by Sargent, which makes the franchise all the more attractive to adapt.

TWILIGHT Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to Tackle HIGHLANDER Remake Script

Well that was unexpected. Melissa Rosenberg, who has written the screenplays for all of the Twilight films, is in negotiations to come on board the Highlander reboot to work on that script. Justin Lin (Fast Five) is on board to direct the film, which will be a remake of the 1986 Christopher Lambert cheese-fest classic (and winner of the Academy Award for Best Movie Ever, according to Ricky Bobby). Neal Mortiz is producing the film, and when he recently sat down with Steve he said that the film will “stay true to the core of what we believe Highlander is,” but they also want to make it “for people who are new to the franchise.”

The most recent draft of the script was written by The Wibberley’s (National Treasure). Heat Vision’s report doesn’t state if Rosenberg is coming in to do “touch-ups” or to completely re-tool the script. There’s no release date set for the film yet, but it’s presumed to be Lin’s next film.

ABC is already in the midst of a new TV adaptation of The Incredible Hulk with Guillermo del Toro as one of the creative minds behind the series, but it looks like the network is also interested in a lesser known Marvel character for a new series as well. Variety reports Twilight screenwriter and former Dexter executive producer Melissa Rosenberg will adapt AKA Jessica Jones for the fall 2011 TV season. As part of a launch of the writer’s new Tall Girls Production banner, the potential new series will likely be the first Marvel project to get off the ground at ABC. The story follows a superhero named Jewel (seen above) who contracts post-traumatic stress disorer and opts to get out of the superhero business. More details after the jump.

Updated THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PARTS 1 & 2 Synopsis Released at AFM

Good news for all of you Twilight fans. While at the American Film Market (AFM), Steve snagged a photo of an updated synopsis for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Parts 1 and 2, the final chapter of Stephenie Meyer’s insanely popular vampire saga. The news is unlikely to cause a stir in the devout faithful who have probably read Breaking Dawn multiple times by now. Those who are strictly invested in the cinematic adaptations, however, are likely to enjoy sinking their teeth into what we have to offer.  Just beware of heavy spoilers, as the synopsis essentially reveals the entire plot.

Breaking Dawn is directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) from a script by Melissa Rosenberg (New Moon). The final chapter has been broken up into two parts with the first set for release November of 2011, and the second November 2012. Hit the jump for more.

Screenwriter Marti Noxon Talks FRIGHT NIGHT, I AM NUMBER FOUR, MAD MEN, DR. HORRIBLE, Comic-Con, Joss Whedon, DEFENDERS

One of the more interesting panels at this year’s Comic-Con is the “Girls Gone Genre” panel on Friday at 5-6pm in room 24ABC.  That’s because the panel features a few of the women that have made it in an industry statistically dominated by men.  Included on the panel are Felicia Day, Kathryn Immonen, Laeta Kalogridis, Melissa Rosenberg, Gail Simone, and Marti Noxon.  All of them are writers, and some are writer/producers.

Anyway, to help promote the panel, I got to speak with Marti Noxon yesterday.  As the screenwriter of the upcoming Fright Night remake and the currently shooting D.J. Caruso movie I Am Number Four, we covered how she got involved in both projects and what fans can expect with the remake of Fright Night.

Of course, we also talked about the other things she’s worked on like Dr. Horrible, Mad Men, the Comic-Con panel, and she also told me what it’s like to go around Comic-Con with Joss Whedon.  If you’re interested in any of the projects I mentioned or just want to hear some great stories, hit the jump:

Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg Video Interview THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE and BREAKING DAWN

With The Twilight Saga: Eclipse finally getting released in a few days, it’s finally time to post the exclusive interviews I did at the junket a few weeks back.  While I debated who to post first…I decided to go with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg.

During the extended interview she discussed how working for director David Slade was different than Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz, how much time she’s spent writing all the Twilight films, what was cut out of Eclipse, and regarding Breaking Dawn…I asked her how long she knew it was going to be two films, when exactly did she start writing the films, what was her reaction to Bill Condon directing the final installments, how has she been working with Condon on the script, and we ended the interview talking about with the 4th book being the most controversial among the fans, how is it for her to tackle the writing.  She talks about how some fans want an R rating and she explains why it doesn’t have to be so graphic.

If you’re a fan of the Twilight films, I promise you’ll love the interview.  Watch it after the jump and look for more exclusive Twilight interview tomorrow night:

To the deafening screams of thousands of fans (most of whom were female, naturally) that had camped out for four days, the stars of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse stepped out at L.A. Live’s Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, June 24th for the film’s highly anticipated premiere, which was part of the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Also in attendance were director David Slade, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, the film’s producers, some of the soundtrack artists (The Bravery, Metric, Eastern Conference Champions) and the woman responsible for it all, author Stephenie Meyer.  Check out the exclusive photos after the jump:

With The Twilight Saga: Eclipse junket this weekend here in Los Angeles, Summit Entertainment has released seven clips from the movie and 33 high resolution images from the David Slade directed film.  The other big news I’m happy to report is Summit is going to let reporters film the print portion of the junket, which means instead of having to read what Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson says about Eclipse, you’ll be able to watch the video.  I’m doing interviews this Saturday, so you can expect tons of Twilight news later that day.

More vampire news today, and this item has a much larger audience than the story on the Blood Nation comic adaptation, as it comes directly from Forks, WA.  We reported earlier in the month that Oscar-winning  writer/director director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) was the frontrunner to direct the final chapter of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, and Summit just made it official with a press release.  Condon, a great get for the franchise, remarked, “I’m very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life on-screen.  As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book–and we’re hoping to create an equally unique cinematic experience.”

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN will be Two Films

by Matt Currie    Posted: February 11th, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Twilight Breaking Dawn slice.jpg

According to Deadline, Summit Entertainment has officially decided to adapt Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in Stephanie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga, into two separate films, which will be shot back to back. This decision has been rumored for a while now and given the novel’s 756-page length, it makes sense from a creative standpoint.  And obviously, it makes sense financially; with the record-breaking box-office bows of the first two, why wouldn’t they want to squeeze as many flicks as they can out of the source material?

The next step for Summit will be finding a director to handle the apparently more mature (and at-times downright gross) territory that’s delved into with this entry in the series. Originally, they had their sights set on New Moon helmer Chris Weitz, but he had other ideas…something about gardening or retirement or something. Per Deadline, the studio’s now looking for someone “high-end” to take the reigns. Series screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is currently in the process of penning the Dawn scripts, with filming slated to begin in October.
