Video of SUPERBAD Table-Read Provides Reminder to Re-Watch SUPERBAD

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 7th, 2012 at 8:25 am

2007′s Superbad was a huge launching point for everyone involved (except for poor Martha MacIsaac even though she was quite good in the film).  Now, a table-read for the film has landed online.  Looking back at over six-minutes of the actors reading the script, I’m instantly reminded of how sweet, funny, and filthy the film is. Some of the jokes in the table read are different, particularly the stuff between Evan (Michael Cera) and Becca (MacIsaac).  Also, “Becca” was originally called “Helen”, and her Becca’s friend “Gabby” was originally named “Becca.”  Clearly, these minor changes will make you rethink the entire film (it will also make you want to watch Superbad immediately).

Full ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Cast Confirmed to Return in New Episodes

According to series writer and co-executive producer Dean Lorey, the entire original cast of the Emmy-winning series Arrested Development will be returning for the new episodes in 2013. While this should have gone without saying once it was reported that Netflix had picked up the exclusive broadcast rights, it’s nice to get some confirmation from the show-runners since information has been hard to come by. Lorey himself said that “even the schedule is being kept under wraps.” Reprising their roles from the first run will be Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Michael Cera, Tony Hale, Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross, Alia Shawkat and Jessica Walter, although there are still no formal deals in place.

On his blog, Lorey commented that he is penning a new season along with Mitch Hurwitz and Jim Vallely and will begin shooting in 2012. There is still no word as to the exact number of episodes, only that it was suggested to do a 9 or 10 episode season to bridge the old series to (hopefully) a feature film. Hit the jump for more.

Sundance 2012: THE END OF LOVE Review

Compelling drama can be drawn out of small, intimate stories, but there comes a point where a story is so humble, so quiet, and so commonplace that there’s almost nothing there.  Mark Webber‘s The End of Love wants to hang its drama on a man coping with the death of his wife and struggling to be a single father, but Webber chooses to have the story live mostly in the moments between a dad and his son.  Webber paints a warm and intimate family portrait but his attempts at any deeper drama outside of the father-son relationship feel out of place against the central and simple family portrait.

Hello, Michael. New Episodes of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Coming to Netflix

Expensive suits.  Quasi-incestuous relationships. Carl Weathers.  Minor Treason.  It’s been nearly six years since the Bluth family brought good wholesome entertainment into America’s living rooms.  But finally, after years of fan demand and seemingly endless rumors, new episodes of Arrested Development are returning to television in 2013.  Provided, of course, that television has Netflix.

Like Family Guy and Futurama before, Twentieth Century Fox is bringing back the critically-acclaimed sitcom (Time Magazine called it one of the best TV shows of ALL-TIME)  for a brand new season in 2013.  But unlike its animated counterparts, fresh episodes of Arrested Development will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix.  We told you back in March that Netflix would host original content with Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards, and while Development isn’t technically a Netflix original, the new episodes are surely the rental service’s highest-profile project to date.   Hit the jump for more on AD’s return.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Coming Back for New Season Before the Movie [Updated with Video of Reunion and Ron Howard Interview]

Earlier today, a tweet from The New Yorker, reporting straight from their own festival in New York, announced the unthinkable as Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz revealed during a cast reunion that the series would be back for another season, but that’s not all. This new season would lead directly into the long-gestating movie that has been talked about by each cast member, every other month, since the invention of television. Since that tweet, more details have surfaced from the festival from EW who reveals that Hurwitz intends to shoot 9 to 10 episodes, each focusing on on an individual character from the Bluth clan (which includes Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia DeRossi, David Cross, Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, and Alia Shawkat). Each episode will catch audiences up on what the characters have been doing for the past five years since the series’ cancellation in 2006. More details on the new season and the forthcoming movie after the jump.

[Update: The entire 100-minute reunion Arrested Development reunion panel is now available for your viewing pleasure after the jump; we've also added an interview with Ron Howard where he talks about how the new season will relate to the movie]

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Cast Reunites for The New Yorker Festival

It turns out it’s possible to get the cast of Arrested Development to reunite, or at least reunite for one evening.  Gothamist [via The Playlist] reports that Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jessica Walter will take the stage with Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz on October 2nd for a special panel.  I’m sure they’ll talk about free trade agreements, the philosophical merits of Kant and Heidegger, and other topics.  I doubt anyone will bring up the Arrested Development movie.  Who wants to hear about that?

In all seriousness, wouldn’t it be awesome if this is how they chose to announce that the film has a greenlight and firm start date?  It’s a bit of a long shot, but either way, you’d be crazy not to try and get into this event.  Tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon.  Unfortunately, there’s no discount if you blue yourself.

Michael Cera Believes in MAGIC, MAGIC

Absent from the silver screen since last summer’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Michael Cera has decided to follow-up that sparkling turn with the indie thriller Magic, Magic. Variety reports that Sebastian Silva will pull writing and directing duties on the project which tells the story of a young girl who begins to lose her mind while vacationing with friends in Chile. Details regarding Cera’s role are not released in the report. Candidates for the female lead are currently unknown as well. While I obviously don’t have a ton of details to go on right now, I have to say that I’m excited to see Cera take on a role in a “thriller.” I’ve always found him to be a talented comedic actor, but a little diversity never hurt anyone. For now, consider me interested Magic, Magic.

You know what I think of when Edgar Wright’s underrated romance/action/comedy/all-around awesome film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World comes to mind? Ludacris. Well, okay, not really. But yet another Scott Pilgrim mash-up has hit the web, this time involving a Ludacris song, and it’s actually pretty damn great. It mixes the song “Threshold 8 Bit” from the film with Ludacris’ “How Low.” Hit the jump to check it out.

Mark Webber Casts Michael Cera, Amanda Seyfried, and His Two-Year-Old Son in Untitled Film

Unless you’re a die hard Scott Pilgrim vs. the World fan, the name Mark Webber may not sound familiar — but it soon will. The indie actor wrote, directed, and stars in an untitled film about a struggling single father who is trying to raise his two year old son in the wake of the child’s mother’s death. The movie mirrors Webber’s own life, and he cast his own two-year-old as his son in the movie.

Michael Cera, Jason Ritter, Shannyon Sossamon and Amanda Seyfried either co-star or cameo as “heightened versions of themselves.”  The movie is being shot for well under a million dollars and has virtually no crew — just a director of photography and a sound person. Webber is producing the film through his company Poor Rich Kids.  Read what Webber had to say about the project after the jump.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: November 11th, 2010 at 4:41 am

slice_scott_pilgrim_vs_the_world_interactive_trailer

How does one reinvent the romantic comedy? The formula for them is simple: Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, happy ending. But finding a new or exciting way to tell that story is always the challenge. And yet Edgar Wright has done it successfully three times now – even if he’s not known as a romantic comedy director (the label used to be for Lubitsch and Wilder, now it’s for Nora Ephron). But in Shaun of the Dead, Shaun must salvage his relationship while the world is on the brink of a zombie apocalypse; in Hot Fuzz he tweaks the action movie genre to show a platonic love story about how sometimes you need a partner to complete yourself; and in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World it’s about fighting the baggage of old relationships while starting a new one made literal. Michael Cera stars as the titular Pilgrim, who meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the girl of his dreams – literally. They start dating, but her evil exes have formed a league to defeat Pilgrim and end their relationship. My review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD Vs. British Accents

With the DVD/Blu-ray of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World set to be released tomorrow, co-writer and director Edgar Wright has released a fun, previously unseen behind-the-scenes clip.  As Wright explains:

So check this out. A rough rehearsal video of the first scene of the movie, shot on my LUMIX stills camera with one twist. Because I didn’t want to jinx the first day of the movie by already shooting the scene, I asked my actors to do the opening scene in British accents.

Since Scott Pilgrim turned out to be great, I think it’s safe to say that the jinx was avoided.  Hit the jump to check out the amusing clip and go buy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on DVD/Blu-ray tomorrow.

Call it a rematch.  The filmmakers and cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World are hitting the road again, this time to celebrate the film’s release on Blu-ray and DVD.  You may remember that the film made an impressive tour when the movie was released back in August (they may have even appeared on your local news).  Said co-writer and director Edgar Wright: “To say thank you to the fans who have supported us, I am very excited to bring special screenings and autograph signing events with me and the cast to Los Angeles, Toronto, Boston and New York.”

Be sure to say thank you for the great film if you live in those cities, or just say thanks by picking up the movie on Blu-ray or DVD when it hits on November 9th.  Hit the jump for more details on the upcoming tour.

Tickets were limited to last night’s American Cinematheque Screening and Q&A of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, but we have some great video clips and images from the session. Guillermo del Toro hosted the event, in which he and actor Michael Cera, director Edgar Wright, and creator Bryan Lee O’Malley discussed a myriad of things involving the film and beyond. All of this went down at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California, and was in support of the film which is set to hit DVD and Blu-ray next Tuesday, November 9th. For clips and my general impressions and recommendations, hit the jump.

If there are two fundamental truths that life has taught us it’s: 1) Do good unto others, and you will be rewarded, and 2) Edgar Wright is a directing god. Wright is the director of the jaw-droppingly great Hot Fuzz, and this year’s just-as-good-if-not-better Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, set for a November 9th release on Blu-ray/DVD.   And so we have a plethora of extras that more or less spotlight the innovative techniques used for the film’s unique style. While there’s not much in the form of Wright himself, the videos give us a sneak peek at what we can expect from the Blu-ray/DVD release. Check out the clips after the jump.
