HAYWIRE Review

Men are taught (or at least they should be taught) to never hit a woman.  The lesson is based on the assumption that women are physically weaker and don’t have the strength to defend themselves (also, hitting people isn’t very nice in general).  But what if the woman can not only hit back, but her job is to hit back and she knows how to hit back harder than anyone?  In Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire, mercenary Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is that woman, and Soderbergh is unapologetic about having her hit in return.  The film forces us to confront our convictions about the fragility of women, and where that belief comes from.  Is the movie a blow for equality in showing that women can take and dish out a beating like a man?  Is a woman’s physicality always sexual?  Haywire doesn’t have easy answers to these questions, but it has no problem asking them under the cover of a badass European flavored action-thriller.

With director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire opening January 20th, we’ve been provided with three clips and almost forty images from the film.  Staring MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers, Haywire also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill Paxton.

I’ve seen Haywire twice now and it’s fantastic.  On top of Carano’s star in the making performance, the action scenes are some of the best I’ve seen in years.   It’s absolutely something you should see in a theater.  Hit the jump for the clips and images and look for my exclusive video interviews with the cast next week.

New Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE Starring Gina Carano

A new trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire has gone online. The movie centers on a burned spy (MMA fighter Gina Carano) who takes revenge against her handlers. Soderbergh has surrounded Carano with a stellar ensemble of familiar faces (including Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, and Michael Douglas), and the action scenes here look absolutely brutal. This new trailer delves a bit more into the plot, and it’s actually a tad spoiler-heavy by way of revealing a couple of the deaths that take place onscreen. Soderbergh’s an incredibly interesting director, and I’m intrigued to see how he handles a film this action-heavy  so it’s safe to say I’m anticipating Haywire quite a bit.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton. Haywire opens January 20th.

New Posters for THE AVENGERS and HAYWIRE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 20th, 2011 at 9:54 am

New posters have gone online for The Avengers and Haywire.  Marvel seems to be taking a page from Warner Bros’ Harry Potter playbook by churning out as many character posters as possible between now and the arrival of the movie.  We’ve already seen the character banners, but now Marvel is disassembling these banners into individual posters.

There’s also a new poster for Haywire and it shares the same eye-catching design as the previous one-sheets.  It even makes the actors’ face-boxes look cool.  Hit the jump to check out the new posters.  Haywire opens January 20, 2012.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

New Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE

A new trailer for Steven Sodebergh‘s spy-action flick Haywire has gone online.  The film stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers.  The new trailer again sells the basic concept: here’s a woman who’s really hot, and she’ll hit you so hard that all of your progeny will feel pain.  The plot looks like standard spy-movie fare, but it appears that Soderbergh is setting his movie apart by embracing the brutality of the fight scenes between Carano and her male co-stars, and questioning how far the audience is willing to go when it comes to seeing a woman getting hit even though she’s holding her own in the fight.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.  The film also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill PaxtonHaywire opens January 20, 2012.

Steven Sodebergh’s Liberace Movie, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, to Air on HBO; Michael Douglas and Matt Damon Confirmed to Star

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are confirmed to star in Steven Sodebergh’s long-in-development Liberace biopic, now titled Behind the Candelabra.  The more surprising news [via EW] is that the movie will air on HBO rather than head to theaters.  Executive Producer Jerry Weintraub (Ocean’s Eleven trilogy) says, “I’ve wanted to make a film about Liberace for a very long time, and after the amazing experience I had with HBO on His Way [Doug McGrath's documentary about Weintraub] I knew that they were absolutely the right place for this movie.”

Michael Douglas is set to play the delightfully flamboyant Liberace who was the world’s highest paid entertainer from the 1950s to 1970s (thanks, Wikipedia!).  Damon will play Liberace’s secret lover Scott Thorson.  Filming is set to begin in summer 2012, with locations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs.

Michael Douglas Still on for LIBERACE; Shooting Set to Begin in May or June 2011

When it was reported this past August that Michael Douglas was suffering from throat cancer, concerns arose not just for his health but for the future of the long-in-development Liberace biopic.  Douglas was to play the famous musician with Steven Soderbergh directing and Matt Damon co-starring.  However, a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter informs us that not only is Douglas recovering from his treatment, but he still has Liberace in his sights.  Douglas tells THR, “I’ve got a bunch of tapes of performances.  I’m thinking; I’m a blank slate. Everything shows me he was a lovely man; I just want to reconfirm that.”  THR also reports that shooting is scheduled to begin in May or June of next year, which confirms Damon’s claim earlier this year that he was planning to shoot the film next summer.  Damon will play Liberace’s lover Scott Thorson.

While I’m happy that Liberace is moving forward, I’m even happier that Douglas is feeling healthy enough to start working again and hopefully we can look forward to more performances from him.

Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE, Starring Gina Carano, Set for April 22, 2011

Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire has reportedly landed a release date.  According to The Playlist, the film is set for release on April 22, 2011.  The movie boasts an outstanding cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz, and Antonio Banderas.  MMA fighter Gina Carano leads the film as a “black ops soldier on mission of revenge after she’s double crossed by one of her team-mates.”  The Playlist says that the script by  Lem Dobbs (The Limey) was “taut, lean, and mean.”

If the April 22, 2011 holds, Haywire will be going up against the documentary African Cats, the Adam Sandler-penned comedy Born to be a Star, the Steve Carell/Ryan Gosling comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family.

Matt Damon Talks THE BOURNE LEGACY, CONTAGION, WE BUILT A ZOO, and LIBERACE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 27th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Universal is moving ahead with the Jason Bourne franchise and they’re doing it without Matt Damon.  As we previously reported, Tony Gilroy will direct The Bourne Legacy from his own script and the movie will be Bourne-less.  While initial reports seemed the show that Damon was miffed at his exclusion, in a recent interview with EW, he explains that he thinks it’s a smart move and it opens the door for a future Bourne movie directed by Paul Greengrass (who helmed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum).  Said Damon:

As I understand it, Jason Bourne is alive in the world that Tony’s going to create. I don’t appear in it, but it’s very much that world. As far as Paul and I are concerned, as long as there’s room for us to come in and do another one, we’re thrilled.

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: September 26th, 2010 at 9:41 am

The estimates are in and it looks like, for once, the financial analysts got it right… I mean the box office analysts. Oh, what’s the difference anyway? There was indeed enough equity left in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street premise after 23 years to put the sequel – Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps – in the top spot for the weekend with an estimated $19 million.

WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: September 24th, 2010 at 7:32 am

Oliver Stone’s recent output shows a man desperate to remain topical.  Unfortunately, World Trade Center is pandering melodrama and W., while nowhere near the disaster it could’ve been, lacked adequate perspective beyond noting we all would’ve been better off if George W. Bush has just been commissioner of baseball.  Now Stone is trying to capitalize on the financial collapse of 2008 by returning to his classic 1987 drama Wall Street.  However, like with W., Stone is so centered on the idea of making a movie that’s socially relevant, that he misses an opportunity for insight or even controversy.  Instead, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is a movie that, despite strong performances, loses itself in a convoluted plot and a cheap ending.

Josh Brolin, Oliver Stone, Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, and Carey Mulligan on the set of Wall Street 2 slice

We have ten clips from Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.  Michael Douglas returns as corporate criminal Gordon Gekko and is accompanied by Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan, Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, and Josh Brolin.  The sequel to his classic 1987 film, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is Stone’s latest topical movie, the first two being World Trade Center and W. This time around, Stone seizes on the economic crisis of 2008, but are audiences really willing to shell out money for a reminder of how the big banks screwed them over?  We’ll find out when the film opens on September 24th.  Hit the jump to check out the clips.

Rachel McAdams May Take on Horror with THE ORPHANAGE and WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE

by Max Steven Miller    Posted: March 22nd, 2010 at 9:27 am

There is a rumor floating around that, if true, will ultimately allow Rachel McAdams to add “scream queen” to her rapidly growing resume.  Although she may have dabbled in the genre with 2005′s Red Eye, McAdams is rumored to be attached to two projects that should allow her to officially cross “horror” off her to do list.

One is a co-starring role alongside Michael Douglas (who is also producing) and possibly, Saoirse Ronan, (The Lovely Bones) in an adaptation of the 1962 Shirley Jackson novel, We Have Always Lived in the Castle – the story of two young girls and their ailing uncle forced to live in an isolated estate after the rest of their family is poisoned.

The other is the starring role in the American remake of the Guillermo del Toro produced Spanish-language film, El Orfanato (The Orphanage). Don’t worry, you’re not alone if you shuddered after seeing the word: remake.  You can check out the trailer and the synopsis for the original El Orfanato from 2007 after the jump.  [Pajiba]

WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS Bumped to September 24th

Josh Brolin, Oliver Stone, Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, and Carey Mulligan on the set of Wall Street 2 slice.jpg

Never actually a good sign for a movie, it seems that the sequel to Oliver Stone’s 1987 critically acclaimed Wall Street is getting the boot, once again. Originally slated for a February 2010 release, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps has officially been bumped from April 23rd to September 24th.  In the Oliver Stone directed film, Michael Douglas revisits greedy businessman, Gordon Gekko -the role that landed him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Shia Lebouf co-stars, perhaps to help pique the interest of a new generation of moviegoers who, very possibly, have never even seen the first film.

Considering Iron Man 2 will be obliterating the box office just two weeks after the initial release date and with the Toronto Film Festival kicking off the awards season in early September, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps will, in all likelihood, fare better in the Fall.  Hit the jump to check out the most recent trailer for the film:

International Trailer for Oliver Stone’s WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 18th, 2010 at 3:02 pm

Josh Brolin, Oliver Stone, Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, and Carey Mulligan on the set of Wall Street 2 slice.jpg

The teaser trailer for Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps may have been a little jokey and overly slick, but the Sun has premiered the international trailer for the film and it gets down to the nuts and bolts of the plot.  It doesn’t reveal anything more that we don’t already know from the plot synopsis.  However, the trailer also features boxing, riding motorcycles, and helicopters so that’s weird, although I suppose they’re symbols of extravagance.  I just love that the whole thing is set to The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.”

The sequel to the 1987 film stars Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan, Frank Langella, and Josh Brolin.  Click here to check out the trailer and hit the jump to read the official synopsis.  Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps hits theaters on April 23rd.
