We’ve got a couple of acquisition stories to report today. First up, Dimension has picked up U.S. distribution rights to the thriller Penthouse North. Directed by Joseph Ruben (Sleeping with the Enemy), the film stars Michelle Monaghan as a photojournalist blinded in Iraq who becomes entangled in a sadistic criminal’s (Michael Keaton) search for a missing fortune. The script was written by David Loughery (Lakeview Terrace), who will also produced alongside Jeff Sackman and Michael Baker. Production begins in Ottawa on December 7th.
Additionally, Tribeca Film has acquired the U.S. rights to the French thriller Sleepless Night. The film debuted to a wildly positive reception as part of the “Midnight Madness” portion of the Toronto Film Festival. Matt caught the pic and loved it, and now Tribeca Film will release the film VOD and theatrically stateside in 2012. The story centers on an undercover cop trying to get his kidnapped son back from a drug-dealing nightclub owner. An English-language remake is already in the works at Warner Bros. You can watch the trailer for the French film here. Hit the jump to read the press releases concerning Penthouse North and Sleeplees Night.

Veteran director Joseph Ruben will lead stars Michael Keaton and Michelle Monaghan in the psychological thriller Penthouse North. Written and co-produced by David Loughery (Obsessed), the film will center on a photojournalist (Monaghan) who has moved into a New York penthouse in an attempt to escape her sordid past. As the story goes, she becomes entangled in a criminal’s (Keaton) search for a missing fortune. According to THR, Penthouse North is scheduled to begin shooting this November in Ottawa.
As for Keaton and Monaghan, the latter can next be seen alongside Gerard Butler in Machine Gun Preacher which premieres at TIFF before hitting limited U.S. theaters on September 23rd. The former was last seen making a great turn as Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s captain in The Other Guys. With regards to director Joseph Ruben, Penthouse North seems to fall right in his wheelhouse as the filmmaker has made a living helming thrillers of various quality such as Dreamscape, Sleeping with the Enemy, The Good Son (a film that I still can’t refrain from yelling “He’s the one doing all of these horrible things!” while watching) and 2004′s The Forgotten starring Julianne Moore.

There are two very important things to know about writer/director Adam McKay’s (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers) The Other Guys:
1. The movie is extremely funny.
2. While press conferences are usually terrible, The Other Guys press conference was one of the best I’ve covered in five years.
Thankfully, Sony let me video tape the entire thing, so you can watch Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton and Director Adam McKay do improv for about 40 minutes with hysterical results. The thing to know about press conferences is, no matter how good they are, the studios never let you use video, and trying to write up great back and forth banter is nearly impossible. But now that the studios are finally taking a more 21st Century approach to interviews (i.e. letting us use video), I’m optimistic this is a sign of things to come.
Trust me when I say, if you’re a fan of Will Ferell and Adam McKay movies, you REALLY want to watch this press conference. Especially since they talk about how to keep your pimp hand strong and when asked what they’re favorite cop movies are…the answers are awesome. Also, make sure to watch Wahlberg’s reactions to some of the questions and answers…it’s priceless.

Sony has released five movie clips from director Adam McKay’s (Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Step Brothers) The Other Guys and you can check them out after the jump. The movie stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Ray Stevenson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dwayne Johnson. I caught a screening a few days ago and am happy to report I absolutely loved this movie. If you’re a fan of McKay/Ferrell movies, get ready for another awesome movie.
As you’ve probably seen in the trailer and TV spots, Ferrell and Wahlberg play partners that never get in on the action. But due to landing a great case, their fortunes might change. Trust me, you’re going to love this film. For a taste of what’s to come, check out the clips:
After the more outside-the-box family films of Ratatouille, WALL-E, and Up, Pixar is going back inside the toy box with Toy Story 3. There’s nothing wrong with being inside the box when there are lots of toys, loads of fun, and plenty of jokes. It’s wonderful to see Woody, Buzz, and the gang team up for another adventure (even if it’s the same rescue/escape narrative structure of the first two films). But Toy Story 3 is so eager to entertain, that it almost never takes a moment to breathe. Instead, it’s a movie that’s a roller coaster in the best sense of the term. Set in the mold of a prison break movie, Toy Story 3 may not break with convention or out from under the shadow of the first two films, but it’s a welcome break from this dreary summer.

With Toy Story 3 getting released next weekend, we’ve been given 5 clips and 18 high resolution images from the film. Also, Matt was just at Pixar to do interviews with the voice cast and the filmmakers, so you can expect a lot more Toy Story 3 coverage next week. Until then, check out the clips and images after the jump.

I don’t know if this actually increases the likelihood of a Beetlejuice sequel, but two of the stars are on board if Warner Bros. feels like putting it together. Moviehole asked Michael Keaton about his interest in a follow-up to the 1988 Tim Burton horror comedy at a press junket for Toy Story 3, to which the actor responded:
“Oh, I’d do that in a heartbeat… Absolutely. That’s the one thing I’d love to do again.”
Likewise, co-star Geena Davis responded in the affirmative (“I would do that!”) to a similar inquiry last month. The idea of a sequel has been bandied about for some time (there’s even a script titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian floating out there somewhere), and doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility. Good to know Keaton won’t be an obstacle if your fingers are crossed. Hit the jump for a synopsis and trailer of the original.

I’ve been waiting for this to go online for almost a year. A promo for Toy Story 3, “Groovin’ with Ken” was shown at last year’s Comic-Con and the audience (myself included) loved it. It’s a brief, Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous-esque piece that’s set in the 70s and has Ken giving advice on how other toys can be cool like him. Of course, the interview becomes awkward when he gets questions on his importance relative to Barbie’s.
If nothing else, the video is worth checking out for the bit of Ken dancing. Also, if you’re somehow not already convinced, Michael Keaton is going to kill as the voice of Ken. So hit the jump already and check out the video. You can also click here to find out what Steve thought about the film when he saw it at ShoWest. Toy Story 3 hits theaters on June 18th in 3D.

While a trailer for director Adam McKay’s The Other Guys has yet to be released, a Sony video stand at ShoWest has a brief look at the interaction between Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. In the film, the two plays cops that never get in on any of the good cases. But when an opportunity arises for “The Other Guys” to step up, things don’t quite go as planned.
As a huge fan of Ferrell and McKay’s last films (Step Brothers, Anchorman, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby), I cannot wait for this August when the film is getting released. Hit the jump to check out the 30 second clip.

A new trailer for Toy Story 3 has been released and as you might expect from the company that only makes amazing movies (Pixar), the trailer makes me wish TS3 was in theaters this weekend. Loaded with funny scenes and action, the trailer is a perfectly cut piece of awesome.
And unlike the first clips that have been released from Toy Story 3, this one starts to show what the movie is really about and how some of the new toys are not so friendly. I promise you want to watch this trailer. Also, I’ve posted 10 new high resolution images that show the new characters in greater detail.

Pixar will be unveiling a new trailer for Toy Story 3 tomorrow. But if you can’t wait till then, 30 seconds of the trailer has already hit the net and it’s after the jump. Featuring some of the new characters in the film, the spot is definitely worth watching. Also, points to Disney/Pixar for finding a way to make us cover the movie twice. After all, we’re posting the full trailer tomorrow as soon as it’s online. Toy Story 3 gets released June 18 and the official website has been updated.
Hit the jump for the full synopsis and the 30 second clip:

Pixar has debuted two new character posters for Toy Story 3 [via ComingSoon and AICN], one featuring a character we knew would be in the film (Ken, i.e. Barbie’s accessory) and a fresh face…or rather, faces (Peas-in-a-Pod). Both are part of an ensemble of fourteen new characters Andy’s toys will meet when they’re dropped off at a day care center when Andy moves to college. We’ve also met another one of the fourteen with Mr. Pricklepants (voiced by Timothy Dalton) and as you can see by an outline of one of the fourteen, there’s the pink bear Lotso who’s rumored to be the villain of the film.
But back to Ken, I think the character may end up stealing the film if the special animated short I saw at Comic Con was any indication. Voiced by Michael Keaton (you already have a big boost there), the short was a “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”-type video, set in the 70s, and the audience of 6,000 was laughing their asses off watching it.
Hit the jump to see full images of Ken, Peas-in-a-Pod, descriptions of the characters, and a teaser image of all the characters soon to be revealed for the third installment of the franchise. Plus, come back tomorrow when a new trailer for the film comes online. Toy Story 3 hits theaters in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D on June 18th.

When you film on the streets of New York City and you’ve got huge stars like Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson involved in the film, you’re going to get a lot of people taking pictures and video of whatever you’re doing. And that’s what happened the other day on the set of director Adam McKay’s “The Other Guys”, as people snapped pictures of the two filming an action scene that involved destroying an amazing car. If you don’t mind some minor spoilers, hit the jump to see what they were filming and you can also watch a video of a separate stunt from the movie which had some people jumping off a building.

Eva Mendes sure likes to keep busy. Since 2007 she has appeared in seven films, not counting the two in post-production or the one she is currently filming. Though that group includes such notables as “The Women” and the direct-to-DVD “Cleaner,” Mendes is still an actress in demand. She has just been signed to co-star in “The Other Guys,” the latest collaboration between Will Ferrell and his “Anchorman” director Adam McKay. Hit the jump for more info on the project.

It seems a little unfair to rip into a movie like “Post Grad”. I don’t mind doing it with a movie like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” because it comes from strong source material, has solid actors, and cost a $150 million to make so a failure is not only a disappointment but a little offensive. But “Post Grad” is so insipid, so in love with its empty characters, barely able to understand its own premise, and comes to such sickening conclusions, I can’t let it pass. When the only way to survive it is to wonder how the next scene will be worse than the one that came before, I feel justified in ripping the film apart since it ripped apart my soul for what felt like an eternity. I can’t understand why Fox Searchlight didn’t dump this straight to DVD and now it’s gonna be taking up 1,958 screens this weekend and wasting the time of those foolish enough to pay a ticket because they thought the movie looked kind of cute judging from the standee in the lobby.
