One of my most-anticipated TV series of 2013 isn’t on network television, cable, or premium cable.  It’s on Netflix.  The streaming service is moving into the original television business, and it might have two hits on its hands with House of Cards and the fourth season of Arrested Development.  Four new trailers have been released for the former, and if you couldn’t tell by the first trailer, the show looks downright nasty and loads of fun.  The new trailers bring us some crackling lines such as “The most you’ll ever make of yourself is blowing men like me,” and “Twitter twat.”  Who can resist dialogue like that?

Back in March, Kevin Spacey billed David Fincher‘s upcoming Netflix series House of Cards as “not your daddy’s West Wing.”  It certainly looks like The West Wing if Aaron Sorkin‘s show was dark, cynical, and filled with duplicitous characters but still entertaining as hell.  Watching the Washington, D.C. scheming in this trailer looks absolutely captivating, and Netflix might very well have a hit show not named “Arrested Development“.

The “found footage” movie that made its way into two of our “Most Anticipated” lists is beginning to rev up its marketing engine. Chronicle, which debuted its first trailer back in October, recently released two clips entitled “The Discovery” and “The Baseball Test.” The first clip is essentially a teaser about how three teenagers acquire telekinesis and other superpowers, but it does a nice job of setting up the dynamic among them. The second clip features the guys testing out their new found powers and contains hilarious moments of schadenfreude; it also happens to give nice foreshadowing in a subtle, yet unnerving performance by Dane DeHaan (True Blood). Unfortunately, the poor quality of the CG baseball doesn’t bode well for the rest of the film. Hit the jump to check out the clips and a new poster for Chronicle.

We have some quick casting stories for you this afternoon.  First up, The Weinstein Company has sent out a press release announcing that Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, and Paul Scheer will return for Piranha 3DD. Their characters survived the first film, and like all good horror flick survivors, I’m sure they’ll offer some kind of cursory explanation of what’s happening, that explanation will be ignored until it’s too late, and then at least two out of the three survivors will be destroyed.  My money is on Rhames making it out alive.  The trio joins previously announced cast members Katrina Bowden, Gary Busey, Danielle Panabaker, David Koechner, Matt Bush, and Chris Zylka.  Piranha 3DD opens in 3D on November 23rd.

In other casting news, Variety reports that Michael Kelly (The Adjustment Bureau) has joined Dane DeHaan Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell, and Ashley Hinshaw in Chronicle.  Kelly will play the father of one of three teenagers who get superpowers when they come into contact with a mysterious substance.  Josh Trank will make his feature directing debut from a script by Max Landis.  Chronicle is set for release on February 3, 2012.

Universal has released a US and a UK poster for their upcoming thriller The Adjustment Bureau.  Based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, the plot centers on an ambitious politician (played by Matt Damon) who falls in love with a ballet dancer (Emily Blunt) but discovers that mysterious forces and a team of shadowy figures are trying to keep them apart.  The film also stars Anthony Mackie, John Slattery, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Michael Kelly, and Terence Stamp.

Universal has released the first trailer for director George Nolfi’s thriller The Adjustment Bureau.  While this might be Nolfi’s first time in the director’s chair, he’s written Oceans Twelve, Timeline, and The Bourne Ultimatum, so he clearly knows his way around a movie set and how to tell a story.

Starring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Anthony Mackie, John Slattery, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Michael Kelly and Terence Stamp, The Adjustment Bureau is based on the Short Story “The Adjustment Team” by Philip K. Dick (Total Recall, Minority Report, Blade Runner).  The film is about whether or not we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us.

As I wrote when I posted the new images from “Mr. Nobody” and “The White Ribbon”, the Toronto Film Festival starts in a few weeks and like every year, the Festival is loaded with plenty of world premieres. While I had planned on attending this year’s festival as a member of the working press, due to my deciding to attend too late, I missed the cut for getting a press badge. However, I’m still going, and hope to be able to report on the films and interview a lot of the people attending.
