Later this year we’ll see Bryan Cranston in the sci-fi epic John Carter, but before that, the Breaking Bad star is heading into space along with the animated spy Archer for the two-part season finale. The new season doesn’t even begin until January 19th, but The Huffington Post reports the finale is already slated to have Cranston play Commander Drake an “earnest, conscientious astronaut” trying to stop mutiny aboard the International Space Station. In addition, series creator and executive producer Adam Reed also revealed that Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) and Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) will also guest star in an upcoming episode where the Isis team heads to West Virginia to help Gillette’s marijuana farming brother (Rooker). McBrayer is perfectly suited for backwoods parts of West Virginia, but Cranston in space with some of the crew will be something special to behold. The third season of Archer begins on January 19th at 10/9c on FX.

A trailer for Activision and Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops expansion pack, Call of the Dead has been released. While it’s not exactly our usual news story, the level looks pretty damn cool. Inspired by zombie Godfather George A. Romero, the level features playable versions of Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Danny Trejo (Machete), Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) and Romero himself.

There are some big superhero movies showing up at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Super isn’t one of them, and I mean that as a compliment. Up on Hall H, this lo-rent, scrappy dark comedy from writer-director James Gunn (Slither) won over the crowd and while Thor and Captain America will pack the house tomorrow, you shouldn’t forget about this movie.

USA announced today at their Comic-Con panel in Ballroom 20 that a Burn Notice prequel movie centered around Bruce Campbell is in the works. According to Variety, the telepic will follow “the last assignment of [Campbell's] character, Sam Axe, as a Navy SEAL before his retirement.” Filming is set to begin after season four (currently airing) wraps and before the start of season five on location in Latin America. Campbell has long been a geek icon due to his role as Ash in the Evil Dead series, so Comic-Con is truly the perfect venue for such an announcement.

Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up and be a secret agent overnight? As the titular lead of the television show Chuck, Chuck Bartowski would probably say it’s not so nice, but he’s had his fair share of adventure and lady love.
For those who need a download of information on the series, brace yourselves. Chuck works for the Nerd Herd department of a Burbank Buy More store, an ode to Best Buy’s Geek Squad (which, by the way, does have a Burbank location). Chuck had a simple life until he opens an email sent from his former college roommate and the whole of the United States’ secret information gets downloaded directly into his brain. As Blu-ray keeps going we’re going to get releases of some classic films, and Sony has put out to early 90′s action films that benefit from new transfers. Those films are both from 1993: Cliffhanger and The Last Action Hero. The pairing of these films as interesting as they both star action stars from the 1980′s (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone) at the beginning of the end of their runs. But the end of the decade, both had worn out their welcome as the industry shifted towards comic book heroes for their summer thrills. My reviews of Cliffhanger and Last Action Hero after the jump.

James Gunn is building himself a strong little cadre of performers for his upcoming twist on the superhero genre, Super. We knew that Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and Kevin Bacon were on board, but today we’ve learned that Gunn has some more great actors up his sleeve. The cast now includes Nathan Fillion, Linda Cardellini, and Michael Rooker. A new James Gunn movie was already cause for celebration, but with this cast Super has now become the title-duper. Here’s the official synopsis:
Wilson plays Frank, a seemingly average Joe who is madly in love with his troubled wife Sarah (Tyler). But when Sarah leaves Frank for Jacques (Bacon), a smooth-talking drug dealer, Frank transforms into pseudo superhero The Crimson Bolt, stakes out Jacques sleazy hideaway, and wages a one-man war on crime. What he lacks in superpowers, he makes up for with a trusty pipe wrench. Every superhero needs a sidekick and so enters Libby (Page), a cute sociopathic teen working at the local comic book store, who morphs into ‘Boltie’ and teams with Frank to take Jacques down.
Fillion will play, “a pop-icon who inspires Frank to don his tights,” Cardellini as “the woman who ultimately delivers love to Frank and [Mikaela] Hoover, and Rooker is “Abe, Jacques’s henchman.” Hit the jump for the full press release. Filming is currently underway in Louisiana.
