An incredibly solid cast has been lined up for the crime thriller Cut BankDeadline reports that Armie Hammer, Sir Ben Kingsley, John Malkovich, Michael Sheen and Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) will lead the thriller, based on a Black List script by Roberto Patino.  Television director Matt Shakman (Mad Men, House) will make his feature directorial debut on the project, which takes place in Cut Bank, Montana.  The story centers on “a young auto mechanic and former high school football star who wants to get the hell out of this tiny town frozen in time.  His attempt to do so sets in motion a series of events that will change his life, and the life of Cut Bank, forever.”

Presumably Hammer will be playing the protagonist, but no details are given on what roles the other actors will take on.  I have to say, though, that this cast is incredibly encouraging and I look forward to hearing more about the project.  Hammer is currently filming The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp, and Sir Ben Kingsley has nabbed himself a handful of high profile roles as of late including Ender’s Game and the villain in Iron Man 3.  Production on Cut Bank begins this fall.

Director Bill Condon Talks THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 Reshoots, New Trailer and Unique Posters

While the Twilight franchise may be winding down, fans still have one last feature film to look forward to later this year.  Director Bill Condon recently posted a brief letter to fans on Facebook in order to explain the reshoots that will take place in a couple of weeks.  Condon quickly assuaged any fears of a delay of the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 by stressing the technical need for these reshoots; no new scenes or dialogue will be added.  Condon also hints that a new trailer will be released soon for fans to “decode,” and calls the first posters for the film “unlike any Twilight images you’ve seen before.”  The finale of the Twilight saga, starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, opens November 16th.  Hit the jump to read Condon’s letter.

First Trailer and Poster for JESUS HENRY CHRIST Starring Michael Sheen and Toni Collette

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: March 20th, 2012 at 6:02 pm

The first trailer and poster for the comedy-drama Jesus Henry Christ have gone online. The film centers on a child genius who sets out to find his biological father, only to discover the he was the result of a sperm donation. Toni Collette plays the boy’s mother, while Michael Sheen plays the “father.” The film was directed by Dennis Lee (Fireflies in the Garden), but the trailer looks like a complete rip off of a Wes Anderson movie; the framing seems almost identical. The premise is a good enough starting point, but I can’t help but shake the feeling that the whole thing plays like one of those Redbox knock-offs that looks like a real movie, but is actually just a watered-down imitation of the real thing. Sheen and Collette are immensely talented so I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong, but this trailer isn’t doing it for me.

Hit the jump for the trailer and poster. The film also stars Jason Spevack and Samantha Weinstein.

Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan Signed for Showtime Drama Series MASTERS OF SEX

Though Paul Bettany was originally slated to lead the 1960′s set series Masters of Sex, the actor has since fallen away from the project. But now Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) has stepped up to the plate to play the human sexuality pioneer William Masters. In addition, he will be joined by Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) playing his better half Virginia Johnson, a more dramatic role for the actress. Michelle Ashford (The Pacific) has written the series based on Thomas Maier’s book Masters of Sex: The Life And Times Of William Masters And Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Love which chronicles the lives, romance and pop culture trajectory of Masters and Johnson, whose research touched off the sexual revolution. Shakespeare in Love director John Madden will be at the helm of at least the pilot which begins production next month. Bettany is a great actor, but I’m interested in seeing Sheen taking a big lead series role like this too. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Rooney Mara Says Terrence Malick Will Shoot LAWLESS in September; Michael Sheen Reveals Role in Malick’s Untitled Drama

Terrence Malick has three movies in the works, and the timeline on when each will be shot/released is fuzzy.  The untitled romantic drama starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams is up first, though we don’t know release date (or even year) yet.  We have seen Malick filming Christian Bale for Knight of Cups and working with Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara for Lawless, but international distributor FilmNation announced these two films will shoot back to back in 2012.  Mara clarified the picture in a recent interview:

“[Lawless is] something that I hope to do, but it’s unfortunately not until September, so it’s a ways away.”

That timeline implies the plan is to shoot Knight of Cups earlier in the year, followed by production on Lawless.  Given how much time Malick generally spends in post-production, I imagine the director will spend a lot of 2012 in the editing room for the Affleck/McAdams drama.  The Tree of Life ended up in theaters a year and a half after the initially announced Christmas 2009 release date.  I expect similar delays for at least one of these projects.  More after the jump.

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS Review

I can’t remember the last time Woody Allen made a film as delightful as Midnight in Paris.  He’s certainly done it before and it’s not one of his comedy classics like Annie Hall and Sleeper, but Midnight in Paris is undoubtedly one of Woody Allen’s best films of the past ten years.  It’s the rare Allen comedy where he doesn’t insert an Allen-like neurotic character, and the script finds inventive ways to be funny and thoughtful.  Johanne Debas and Darius Khondji’s cinematography is gorgeous, the film is filled with wonderful performances where you can tell that all of the actors are having a marvelous time, and Allen brings it all together with a joy rarely seen in his movies these days.

BEAUTIFUL BOY Review

by Bill Graham    Posted: June 3rd, 2011 at 10:00 am

[This review is a reprint of Bill's review that ran during the Dallas International Film Festival]

Beautiful Boy is the story of missed connections between one another. Sometimes these result in arguments or misunderstandings, while other times they go unresolved until they finally boil over and cause a lasting effect. Director Shawn Ku gracefully navigates the heart breaking story of a couples’ loss in the wake of their son committing an act of mass violence at his college and then taking his own life. While the plot may sound conveniently topical, the way in which Ku treats the subject will have ripples for years to come. There isn’t an easy path of recovery to take, and now more than ever, people’s intrusive voyeurism and public remarks can cause even more emotional pain. Hit the jump for the full review.

Michael Sheen Exclusive Interview BEAUTIFUL BOY

Beautiful Boy is the story of how tragedy effects a family and all those around them, in every way. A married couple on the verge of separation suddenly find themselves having to turn to each other to overcome unimaginable heartbreak. Under intense media scrutiny following their son’s shocking act of violence that changes the lives of so many, Bill (Michael Sheen) and Kate (Maria Bello) see a chance for happiness again through their common grief.

At the film’s press day, actor Michael Sheen talked exclusively to Collider about baring himself emotionally for this role, playing the emotion of grief in such a naturalistic way, working with a director who established such an honest and collaborative set, and just being open and present in the moment. He also talked about why he loves playing Aro in The Twilight Saga, how he loves playing as many different characters, in as many different worlds as he possibly can, and why he wants to take on Hamlet next. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

If you’ve been hanging around the site for a while, you know that we tend to post a lot of content throughout the course of a week. From interviews and reviews to general entertainment news, set visits, and niche stories, we always do our best to provide you the reader with a wide spectrum of coverage. Nevertheless, our front page only holds fifteen stories at a time meaning that some of our most interesting content has a tendency to fall through the cracks.  In an attempt to bring these stories back to the forefront, we are introducing this weekly “Top 5″ feature which we hope will prevent readers from missing out on the best Collider has to offer.

In this, our inaugural week, we’re bringing you a recap of Brendan’s mathematical breakdown of dueling Snow White films, our look at dimly lit 2d theater projection, a possible R-rated Riddick, Michael Sheen reading Twilight fan fiction, and Jack Black discussing with Steve where not to use body soap. Michael Sheen Reads TWILIGHT Fan Fiction

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 26th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

michael-sheen-slice-01

I don’t really understand the appeal of fan fiction, but there’s a lot on the Internet where the appeal confuses me.  For those who don’t know, “fan fiction” is where a fan takes a property they like and writes their own story for it.  They’re not writing on spec to try and get a job on the show or anything like that.  They’re just writing it because they’re a fan.  A subset of fan fiction is “slash-fic” where the author makes two characters have sex regardless of their relationship in the property.  On VH1, The Twilight Saga co-star Michael Sheen read some fan-fic that closely borders on slash-fic.  The absolute conviction of his reading is what makes it hilarious.  What’s even better is that I think if Sheen read the actual Twilight books, they would be just as funny if not funnier.

Hit the jump to check out the video.  Sheen will reprise his role as Aro in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, which opens November 18th.

Michael Sheen Talks MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, and More

by Christina Radish    Posted: May 19th, 2011 at 7:02 pm

michael-sheen-midnight-in-paris-slice

In the romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, from writer/director Woody Allen, actor Michael Sheen plays Paul, an intellectual visiting Paris with his wife (Nina Arianda), while he lectures at the Sorbonne. At the same time, Inez (Rachel McAdams) is there with her fiancé Gil (Owen Wilson), who is taking time away from his successful career as a Hollywood screenwriter to pursue his aspirations to be a serious novelist, much to her dismay. When Inez unexpectedly runs into Paul, who she has had a crush on since college, she immediately finds him as charming as he is cerebral, while Gil finds him to be an insufferable know-it-all that he can’t stand to be around. As Gil is increasingly absent to focus on his writing, Paul and Inez find themselves growing increasingly closer.

At the film’s press day, Michael Sheen talked about how much he enjoyed working with Woody Allen, how amazing it was to have some of the film’s Paris locations all to themselves, how much fun his character was to play, and how he thought Owen Wilson found a really good balance between having the angst, anxiety and neurosis of a Woody Allen character. He also talked about what’s in store for his character Aro in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, and said that the talk of him doing Dark Shadows was a bit premature. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Michael Sheen Talks THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN; Says He’s Not Doing DARK SHADOWS

This week, Collider got a chance to catch up with Michael Sheen at the press day of a film that we’ll be writing about later.  However, since we also got a catch to ask him about working on the two-part The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, we wanted to get that portion of the interview posted right away. Sheen revealed that he got the opportunity to delve into Aro’s insanity a bit more, this time around, and that he got to show more of what’s under the surface of the character.  He also talked about how much he enjoyed working with Bill Condon and thought the director handled the huge undertaking of a two-part film with about 40 new characters and a huge battle scene brilliantly.

Sheen also stated that, while he was talking about doing a role in Dark Shadows, the announcement of his involvement was a bit premature, and he will not be doing that film. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

A number of images from Woody Allen’s latest film Midnight in Paris have been released. The romantic comedy centers on a man (Owen Wilson) who is in Paris with his wife (Rachel McAdams) but begins going off on his own a midnight to explore the nightlife the city has to offer. The trailer for the film was released last month, and actually shows a bit of promise given that Allen hasn’t really made a worthwhile film in quite some time.

The cast includes Wilson, McAdams, Michael Sheen, Kathy Bates, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard, and Adrien Brody. Hit the jump to check out the images. Midnight in Paris opens May 20th and will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
