MEN IN BLACK 3 Review

Fifteen years ago, Men in Black was released in theaters.  It further cemented Will Smith‘s star status, gave his high-energy style a perfect foil with Tommy Lee Jones‘ dour-yet-playful performance, and provided a fun, upbeat experience that was delightfully silly and bizarre (I still crack up when Smith tells Jones, “Awww.  You brought that tall man some flowers!”).  Strangely, Men in Black 3 doesn’t draw strength from anything that made the original film an enjoyable experience.  Instead, the latest sequel finds its heart in supporting characters, and letting special-effects makeup guru Rick Baker run absolutely wild as he swings his marvelous alien creations into the 1960s.  It’s a shame that Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones’ performance, and the humor can’t match Baker’s bravado and creativity.

A giant batch of new images from Men in Black 3 have hit the web.  Though we get our fair share of looks at stars Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and Jermaine Clement, the real highlight of the group is a handful of peeks at legendary makeup artist Rick Baker’s inspired alien designs.  We saw a few of these in a recent batch of alien-centered pics, but this group is of much better quality.  Baker took his inspiration from the sci-fi films of the 50s and 60s, so the impressive group of aliens on display in Men in Black 3 have that retro look down-pat.

Recap of BOARDWALK EMPIRE Academy of Television and Science Panel; Creator Terrence Winter Talks Season Three

The other night, The Academy of Television and Science hosted an exclusive panel with the cast and creator of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Boardwalk recounts the rise of the duplicitous Nucky Thompson torn between the political upheaval and criminal birth of the Prohibition.  His rise is cast against the downfall of his surrogate son, Jimmy Darmondy, a War Veteran scarred by his time over there.  It is the tense interplay between the two characters that gave Boardwalk Empire much of its dramatic heft during its first two remarkable seasons – which is probably what made Season Two’s conclusion so… surprising.

During the panel, Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt discussed the controversial finale, costar Michael Shannon lamented always playing “the crazy person”, and creator Terence Winter previewed Season Three, among many other topics of conversation.  For highlights from the panel (which also included costars Kelly Macdonald, Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Kenneth Williams, Vincent Piazza and Gretchen Mol) hit the jump.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND THE MAKING OF PSYCHO Gets New Title and Begins Principal Photography

Sacha Gervasi‘s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho has picked up a new title, and begun principal photography.  The film will now simply be entitled “Hitchock“, which is probably better since the previous title sounds more fitting for a documentary.  Hitchcock is being billed as a love story between the legendary director (played by Anthony Hopkings) and his wife and partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  The movie also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Kurtwood Smith, Wallace Langham, Richard Portnow, and Michael Wincott.

Earlier today we learned that Jessica Biel will be playing Vera Miles in the star-studded real life pic Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, and now four more thesps are lined up to join the project. Anthony Hopkins is set as the famous director, Scarlett Johansson is playing Psycho scream queen Janet Leigh, Helen Mirren is set as Hitch’s wife, and James D’Arcy is up for the role of the uber creepy Anthony Perkins. Now Variety reports that Toni Collette, Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man) and Michael Wincott (The Crow) are in negotiations to take on supporting roles. BOARDWALK EMPIRE Recap: “The Ivory Tower”

The second episode of the best new series on television didn’t have all that much action or violence, but plenty still happened in the wake of Jimmy Darmody’s (Michael Pitt) scheme to steal Nucky Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi) shipment of liquor to Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg) as well as the murder of Big Jim Colosimo in Chicago. This episode specifically functions as a small move in the big game of chess that is the story of Boardwalk Empire. In the big picture, the episode is one big setup for an impending storm in the crime world. That’s not to say this episode is uneventful, but it’s certainly the beginning of something bigger. Emily Mortimer and Michael Stuhlbarg Join Martin Scorsese’s 3D Family Flick THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET

Emily Mortimer (Shutter Island) and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man) have joined the cast of Martin Scorsese’s 3D family film The Invention of Hugo Cabret.  Based on the best-selling book by Brian Zelznick, Cabret follows “Hugo (Asa Butterfield), an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. When he encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl (Chloe Moretz) and a cold, reserved man (Ben Kingsley) who runs a toy shop, he is caught up in a magical, mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy.”  The cast also includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Christopher Lee and Ray Winstone.

According to Heat Vision, Mortimer plays the station’s flower shop girl, Lisette, and Stuhlbarg plays Rene Tabard, a film restorer.  Mortimer is also set to co-star with Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel in the comedy My Idiot Brother while Stuhlbarg can next be seen as crime boss Arnold Rothstein in the upcoming HBO series Boardwalk Empire (Scorsese directed the show’s pilot).

Bad-Ass Teaser Trailer for HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE

If you liked yesterday’s trailer for David Simon’s Treme, you’re gonna love the teaser trailer HBO just premiered for their upcoming prohibition-era crime drama Boardwalk Empire.  The trailer only features two lines of dialogue (and I won’t spoil them because they’re great), and the rest is set to some slick music.  The visuals look great, the cast is strong, and I can’t wait to check this show out.  The wait will be somewhat excruciating as the show won’t premiere until this fall.

A SERIOUS MAN Blu-ray Review

Regardless of the reception of Joel and Ethan Coen’s A Serious Man, one thing is clear: whatever creative or emotional bullshit led to their duo of moderate to mediocre to bad films (Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers) – whatever the dust, it’s been shaken loose and they are back on a filmmaking tear. A Serious Man is their most Jewish film (literally), and the humor is almost subterranean. It’s a darkly, philosophically funny movie about Prof. Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) and the drama in his life in 1967. It’s also about the irony of his life. A SERIOUS MAN DVD Review

After 25 years in the industry, Joel and Ethan Coen have filmmaking down to a fine art.  And as such, A Serious Man plays like a meticulously orchestrated symphony.

With equal parts reverence for and mockery of suburban Jewish society in the 1960s, A Serious Man is unlike any other movie from 2009.  Then again, each and every one of the Coen brothers’ films stands out from its contemporaries.  In this updated Job story, Michael Stuhlbarg plays Larry Gopnik, a middle-aged Jewish physics professor who doesn’t know how good he’s got it until his world comes crashing down at his feet.  The film hits DVD this Tuesday, and it’s definitely one for the collection.  Follow the jump to see why.

Michael Stuhlbarg talks about Martin Scorsese’s HBO Show BOARDWALK EMPIRE

HBO makes great television. We all know that. Every year the cable channel produces series and mini-series that go on to win Emmys and create intense conversations about the latest episodes. And right now, the network is hard at work producing what’s sure to be a massive television event, “Boardwalk Empire”.

If you haven’t yet heard of the show, don’t panic. The network only shot the pilot a few months ago and the full series begins shooting next month. But the reason you should care is one name: Martin Scorsese. Yes, one of the greatest directors in Hollywood directed the pilot and he’s producing the show along with a few people that made “The Sopranos”. The show is a look at the origins of Atlantic City’s boardwalk and is based on the book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City” by Nelson Johnson. I recently got to speak to one of the stars of the show, Michael Stuhlbarg, and after the jump you can read what he had to say:

New Coen Brothers Footage! 4 Movie Clips from A SERIOUS MAN

In just a few short days, a new Coen Brothers movie will premiere at the Toronto Film festival! It’s called “A Serious Man” and just like the rest of the world, I cannot wait to see it. Anyway, to help promote the upcoming release, Focus Features has released 4 clips from the film and you can watch them after the jump. Since I am about to see the movie, I’m refusing to watch any additional footage that could give anything away. But if you need a Coen Brothers fix, I’ve provided the clips after the jump. This poster for “A Serious Man” isn’t quite as good as the trailer but that’s a tough act to follow.  It’s not that this poster is bad but it’s hard to tell if Michael Stuhlbarg is looking defiant or contemplative.  Perhaps that’s the point.  I do know that I loved the heading “The New Film By Joel and Ethan Coen” as if it’s an event, which it is.
