Seth Rogen on a GREEN HORNET Sequel: ‘Not Any Time in the Foreseeable Future’

Seth Rogen 50 50 interview slice50

With Michel Gondry’s Green Hornet taking in almost $230 million worldwide (before home video), it is one of those films that could easily get a sequel.  After all, studios are always looking for franchises, and I’m sure Sony was hoping Green Hornet would be a big enough hit that everyone involved would want to make another one.  So when I sat down with Seth Rogen for 50/50 at the Toronto Film Festival, I asked about the status of a Green Hornet sequel.  He told me:

“Not any time in the foreseeable future.  It’s just not something we’re interested in right now.  It’s a lot more fun to make cheaper, much dirtier movies.”

Michel Gondry to Adapt Philip K. Dick’s UBIK

The Green Hornet director Michel Gondry’s next movie will be an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s 1966 science fiction novel, Ubik. The screenplay will remain loyal to Dick’s original text.

This will be the second attempt by a French filmmaker to adapt Dick’s famed work. In 1974, Jean-Pierre Gorin commissioned the writer to adapt his own novel to a screenplay. The movie never got made but Dick’s labor didn’t go entirely to waste – it was instead published as Ubik: The Screenplay.

Highly respected in France, Philip K. Dick is perhaps one of the most popular American sci-fi writers in the world – and Hollywood. Hit the jump to find out which classic movies were inspired by his works.

THE GREEN HORNET Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 14th, 2011 at 8:46 am

Green-Hornet-movie-image-seth-rogen slice

Last year on our podcast, Running Dialogue, /Film’s Russ Fischer described Iron Man 2 as a “happy drunk”, which was a fitting description for the sloppy, yet joyful superhero movie.  I would like to steal his phrase and begrudgingly give him credit as I think Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet is a happy drunk as well as a happy stoner and at times a happy cokehead.  The film is colorful, vibrant, and has enough of Gondry’s stylistic flourishes without becoming oppressively whimsical.  Even when the film starts to drag or the plot becomes muddled and we’re forced to spend time with underdeveloped characters, Seth Rogen’s infectious enthusiasm keeps the mood of the picture light and fun even though his character is an unethical, egotistical jerk.  The Green Hornet is a film that succeeds in spite of itself and it’s a happy drunk that won’t leave you with too much of a hangover (despite the unnecessary 3D).

Michel Gondry Exclusive Video Interview THE GREEN HORNET; Plus an Update on His Animated Noam Chomsky Documentary

With Sony’s The Green Hornet arriving in theaters this weekend, I got to sit down with the cast and the filmmakers on the Sony lot last weekend.  Over the past two days I’ve posted  Seth Rogen/Cameron Diaz and Jay Chou (Kato). For tonight’s installment, I’ve got director Michel Gondry.

What I especially loved about talking to Gondry was how relaxed it was.  When I sat down, I noticed that he’d created a Green Hornet TV microphone flag and attempted to run the interview like we were on TV.  It’s how the interview started and ended.  Which was very different and a lot of fun.

Anyway, during our extended conversation we talked about his haircut (really), the buzz on Green Hornet, what did editor Sally Menke bring to the film, how he edited a very cool scene, what might be on the DVD/Blu-ray, and he gave me an update on his animated documentary that he’s doing on Noam Chomsky. So what are you waiting for, hit the jump to watch, read or listen to Green Hornet TV with Michel Gondry!

Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz Exclusive Video Interview THE GREEN HORNET

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 11th, 2011 at 9:39 pm

With Sony’s The Green Hornet arriving in theaters this weekend, I got to sit down with the cast and filmmakers on the Sony lot a few days ago.  Since I spoke to so many people, I’m breaking up the interviews and posting a new one every day this week.  Yesterday I offered you my video interview with Jay Chou (Kato), and today I’ve got Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz.

One of the many things I love about Seth Rogen is how honest he is.  Unlike some celebrities that are careful to say all the right things and never engage in any controversy, if you ask Rogen a question, he’ll tell you exactly how he feels.  So when I sat down with Rogen and Diaz, one of the many things I wanted to know was their thoughts on the buzz for their film.  Rogen gave me a great answer.  On top of that, we talked about the rehearsal process, their chemistry, what Michel Gondry brought to the film, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch the interview:

Sometimes you have to pinch yourself. I had to do just that last month when I got a chance to drive Black Beauty from Columbia Pictures’ upcoming The Green Hornet. The decked-out 1965 Chrysler Imperial has been touring the country in promotion of the film, and they made a stop in the Dallas area with an offer for press members to drive the vehicle. Even amidst a packed week, I couldn’t resist the offer so I went out to the Carl’s Jr. to cover the event. Hit the jump to check out a video from inside the car as I take it for a brief spin, tons of pictures, and highlights of my discussion with the handler of the Black Beauty.

Sony has released 7 movie clips from Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet which stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz and Tom Wilkinson. If you’re asking how can Seth Rogen be an action hero, these clips will show you.  As you’ll see, The Green Hornet is a twist on the superhero genre since it’s the sidekick who does most of the fighting.

I caught an early screening of the film and liked it a lot.  While there was some bad buzz online awhile ago, I promise you the film is going to surprise you.  Not only does The Green Hornet feature a number of impressive action scenes, it’s really funny.  Hit the jump for the clips.  Look for video interviews with the cast next week:

Behind-the-Scenes Images from THE GREEN HORNET

We have been tracking development on The Green Hornet for a couple years now, and boy has it been a fun ride.  A bumpy one, too, but star Seth Rogen and his co-writer Evan Goldberg have pushed through the mire every step of the way to deliver their passion project.  Stephen Chow has to drop outSign Michel Gondry!  Nicolas Cage doesn’t want to be the bad guy anymore?  Get me Christoph Waltz!  Think we need to escape the holiday shuffle?  Awesome, we’ll be a hit in January!

It’s finally here, and I have every reason to expect an enjoyable final product in theaters on January 14, 2011.  The last leg of the promotional push from Columbia has turned inward — first a featurette in late December, now some neat behind-the-scenes photos.  Check out the images after the jump.

One of the most anticipated movies of the new year, The Green Hornet is set to kick off 2011 with a blend of adventure and director Michel Gondry’s habitual touch of eccentricity, if the various artworks are anything to go by.

Remember when Collider gave you an exclusive sneak peek of The Green Hornet’s character posters back in November? They have now officially debuted on Korean billboards, while the Spanish and French posters resemble the US ones. Hit the jump to take a look.

THE GREEN HORNET Tracking Surprisingly High for January Release Date

While January is usually the time of year that studios dump their, shall we say, less than Oscar-worthy films, this January will see the release of the high-profile Michel Gondry The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen. When the release date for The Green Hornet was moved from late December to January 14th, many thought it was a sign that Sony was unhappy with the film. Could they actually be thinking that a 3D superhero film would do summer-like business in January? Well, Sony’s gamble just may have paid off, because reports are coming in that the audience tracking for the 3D superhero flick is very strong.

As the marketing push is in full-swing (we posted the latest featurette from the film a few days go) Sony is reporting that 19% of young men that they polled have ranked Hornet first in the list of films they want to see. Likewise, 23% of boys 13-16 said it was their first choice. Even females are paying more attention to the film than expected. When the flick started test screening a month or so ago, word started the trickle out that it was actually pretty good, and not at all the disaster that was previously feared. Variety cites a rival studio exec as saying the film received positive reactions from a trade screening. The Green Hornet opens in 3D on January 14th.

New Featurette for THE GREEN HORNET

Seth Rogen Evan Goldberg On Set Interview THE GREEN HORNET slice

Sony has released a new featurette for Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet.  If you’re asking how can Seth Rogen be an action hero, this featurette tries to explain it.  As you’ll see after the jump, the featurette has footage from the movie mixed with interviews with Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Cameron Diaz.  They explain how The Green Hornet is a twist on the superhero genre since it’s the sidekick who does most of the fighting.

I caught an early screening of the film and liked it a lot.  While there was some bad buzz online awhile ago, I promise you the film is much better than you think it is and it’s definitely going to surprise you.  Not only does The Green Hornet feature a number of impressive action scenes, it’s really funny.  Hit the jump for the new featurette and expect a number of new interviews as we get closer to release.

New Posters for THE GREEN HORNET and DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 17th, 2010 at 8:01 am

green_hornet_dylan_dog_poster_slice_01

New posters have gone online for The Green Hornet and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.  The poster Green Hornet isn’t all that spectacular, but I’m hearing positive buzz on the film, which stars Seth Rogen and Jay Chou as guys who masquerade as heroes masquerading as villains.  They also wear masks.  As for Dylan Dog, it’s an Italian teaser poster with the letters “DD” on it instead of the full title.  However, due to the character’s popularity in Italy (the film is based on one of the best-selling Italian comic books), that shouldn’t be a problem.  If the film shows up in the U.S., the marketing is going to have to be a bit more explicit.

Hit the jump to check out both posters.  Directed by Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind), The Green Hornet also stars Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz.  The film opens in 3D on January 14, 2011.  Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and stars Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington.  It’s set to open in Italy in March.

New Posters for THE GREEN HORNET and FROM PRADA TO NADA

Two new posters this Friday, both international in their own right.  The first, for The Green Hornet, is so in the more traditional sense: it comes from Taiwan.  The masked superhero film stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, and Christoph Waltz; Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind) directing.

The second poster, for From Prada to Nada, reaches across the border with a Latina take on the Jane Austen classic Sense & Sensibility.  The adaptation stars April Bowlby, Camilla Belle, Alexa Vega, Wilmer Valderrama, and Nicholas D’Agosto.  Hit the jump for both posters.

New Trailer for THE GREEN HORNET; Tons of New Footage and ‘Kato Vision’

While many people seem to have already made up their mind about Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen, others are still trying to get a feel for the film. Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) isn’t the obvious choice for directing a film heavy on action and fun, while a slimmed down Rogen is causing people aneurisms as they try to picture him starring in an action film. The Green Hornet also stars Jay Chou as the brawn of the duo, Kato, along with Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, and Michael Pena. Until reviews flood the world ahead of the January 14th 3D release by Sony, most people will judge the film on the trailers and the newest one does a solid job at selling all the nuances and showcases “Kato Vision.” So hit the jump to check out the new trailer with lots of new footage that does not give too much away:
