Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Michelle Pfeiffer (Scarface) and Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) are attached to star in the dysfunctional family comedy, Man Under.  From screenwriter Ann Cherkis (The Secret), Man Under centers on a Yonkers-based family whose lives turn upside-down when New York City’s Museum of Modern Art displays photographs of them and turns them into overnight celebrities.  Robbins, himself an Oscar-nominated director, will helm the pic.  Hit the jump to get caught up with the talent.

Along with a new batch of release dates comes a title change to a significant picture.  Check out the details below:

• Jack the Giant Killer will be formally retitled to Jack the Giant Slayer (because it’s more family-friendly…) and will now open March 1st, 2013.  Pic stars Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci and Ewan McGregor.
• Malavita, Luc Besson’s comedic actioner, gets a new release date, opening almost a year to the day on October 18th, 2013. Relativity pic stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dianna Agron.
• Also from Relativity, 21 and Over will move up two weeks to open opposite Jack the Giant Killer Slayer on March 1st, 2013. The picture stars Justin Chon, Skyler Astin and Miles Teller.

Principal photography has commenced on director Luc Besson’s (The Fifth Element) comedic actioner Malavita.  The film stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones and centers on notorious mafia family who gets relocated to Normandy as part of the witness protection program.  Though they’re seemingly out of harm’s way, the family finds it hard to let go of some of their more colorful old habits and soon find themselves “handling things the ‘family’ way.”  The ensemble cast also includes Glee star Dianna Agron and Wanderlust’s John D’Leo.

Filming is underway in Normandy, with additionally shooting set to take place in New York.  A firm release date has yet to be set, but Malavita is expected to bow sometime in 2013.  Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Emboldened by the success of Valentine’s Day, Garry Marshall took another crack at the holiday-based all-star anthology in 2011, with similarly repulsive results. This time, though, movie-goers commendably ignored him (and hopefully quashed plans for Columbus Day or whatever the hell was coming next). Of course, it’s never a good idea to interpret the commercial failure of a terrible movie as anything more than an aberration. But in this case, there was an encouraging sense that the world had finally revolted against a sub-genre populated by cynical, bald-faced cash-grabs.

And indeed, New Year’s Eve is the romantic comedy distilled to its basest form; a film that trots out a dizzying array of A-listers and expects applause, while abandoning time-consuming chores like character, story and dialogue. Hit the jump for the full review.

This weekend I find myself deep in the heart of Louisville, KY for Fandomfest Louisville 2012. Part Comic-Con, part pop culture celebration, and part horror film festival, a few guests of note include Bruce Campbell, Sean Astin, Tyler Mane, and slasher icon Kane Hodder. While each of these attendees has a special place in my pop culture heart in one way or another, my mission today is to track down former WCW star Diamond Dallas Page. 10 year-old me loved nothing more than watching DDP and co. weekly on WCW Monday Nitro, and today may be the only opportunity I get to share that joy with someone who was an integral part of it.

Opening this weekend is director Alex Kurtzman’s (co-writer of Star Trek and Cowboys & Aliens) feature debut, People Like Us.  Inspired by true events from his own life, the film follows Sam (Chris Pine), a debt-ridden salesman who learns that his father has suddenly died, leaving behind a secret 30-year-old daughter (Elizabeth Banks) and a sizable amount of money meant for her.  As he struggles with the decision of whether or not to share the money, he forges a relationship with his unsuspecting sister and her young son.  For more on the film, here’s eight clips.

At the recent Los Angeles press day, I was able to speak with Michelle Pfeiffer (she plays Pine’s mother).  We talked about making the film, how the studios have moved away from making talking dramas, deleted scenes, her early movie and TV work in projects like CHiPs, Delta House and Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen, t-shirts, and how she prepares for a role.  In addition, with Pfeiffer having played Catwoman in Tim Burton‘s Batman Returns, I asked if she was looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises.  Hit the jump to watch.

It looks like Michelle Pfeiffer (Scarface) might be joining Robert De Niro (Goodfellas) in returning to their mafia roots in Luc Besson’s crime comedy, Malavita.  Based on Tonino Benacquista’s novel, “Badfellas”, Malavita follows a mafia family who seeks witness protection in France.   The problem is that they brought their criminal habits with them and start to deal with things in the old-fashioned way.  De Niro is set to star as the head of the family, who was also head of the local crime family until he turned rat.  Pfeiffer is in talks to star as his wife, who has a soft spot for using arson against those who cross her.   Besson, who wrote the script and will also produce, is eyeing a production start this August.  Hit the jump for more on Malavita.

Tim Burton‘s Dark Shadows is a series of flawed assumptions resulting from remarkable incompetence.  Burton believes he’s blended a gothic style with a campy comedy, but his film is neither.  The characters act at being a bunch of kooky, Addams Family-style misfits, but they’re nothing more than vague, one-dimensional sketches or, in the case of the protagonist, a confused contradiction.  Seth Grahame-Smith‘s script thinks it has balanced out the story elements into a compelling narrative, but it’s a poorly plotted mess that eschews character development in favor of a softball joke or clumsy dark humor.  With the exception of a great performance from Eva Green, Dark Shadows flails wildly at concocting a strange brew, and only comes up with weak tea.

A bit over a month after the first trailer for long-lost-sibling drama People Like Us debuted online, a sizzle reel (fancy industry talk for “featurette”) has followed. Basically, it’s a lot of the stuff we’ve seen before (plus some new bits), mixed with footage of first-time director Alex Kurtzman (co-writer of Star Trek and Transformers) and stars Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks discussing the film. Co-written by Kurtzman, frequent collaborator Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert, the film sees a debt-ridden salesman (Pine) who must split a sizeable inheritance with a sister (Banks) he didn’t know about; as he struggles with the “But it’s so much money!” quandary, he forges a relationship with his unsuspecting sis and her young son.

If you thought the first trailer betrayed a bit too much schmaltz, this one won’t do much to sway you. But, at the very least, it improves upon its predecessor by cutting the line “Sometimes the past is a present.” Shudder. Hit the jump to check it out. I don’t know if there’s any footage left to squeeze out of The Avengers, but the Marvel Marketing Machine (which could be the villain in a presumed sequel) is still cranking out propaganda, which you can get caught up on here.  We posted a new TV spot for the heroic assembly movie earlier today, but a new featurette has debuted as well.  Luckily, Dark Shadows has decided to release their own featurette which focuses on the Collins’ family.  The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg and Cobie Smulders opens May 4th.  Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfieffer, Eva Green, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, Johnny Lee Miller and Helena Bonham Carter opens a week later on May 11th.  Hit the jumps to check out the new featurettes.

With a cast that sports Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, Helena Bonham Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer, it’s easy to lose Christopher Lee in the mix.  This new Dark Shadows featurette reminds us that Lee is a consummate master of the horror genre and can boast a role that will forever be cemented in cinematic history.  There’s a nice visitation of classic (ie non-Twilight) vampire movies that serve as inspiration for Depp’s version of Barnabas Collins, an imprisoned vampire who is awakened in the 1970s and must protect his dysfunctional descendants.  The film, directed by Tim Burton, also stars Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, and Jonny Lee Miller.
