Kevin Kline Talks DARLING COMPANION, Charlie Kaufman’s FRANK OR FRANCIS, and His Oscar Short with Mike Myers

In the drama Darling Companion, from director/co-writer/producer Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat, The Big Chill, Silverado), Beth (Diane Keaton) and her daughter (Elisabeth Moss) take home a dog that they find on the side of the freeway, much to the ire of her husband, Joseph (Kevin Kline).  Before long, the dog, aptly named Freeway, becomes a beloved member of the family.  But, when the dog bounds away into the woods after a deer, everything is thrown into crisis mode and a search party forms that ultimately ends up bringing the entire family closer together.

At the film’s press day, actor Kevin Kline talked about what keeps him coming back to work with filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan (they’ve done six films together now), working for scale to get the movie made, why a film like this is a tough sell to a Hollywood studio, how much improvisation went on, why people seem to love their dogs more than each other, and what it was like to work with Diane Keaton.  He also talked about how he likes to have fun when he’s working, that he’ll be doing some Shakespeare this summer, and that he’s hoping to do the Charlie Kaufman film Frank or Francis next, in which he will play three characters.  Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Mike Myers Schools Kevin Kline on Oscar Etiquette in Funny-or-Die-Produced Promo

The 2011 Oscar race will finally be over this Sunday night, but winners need to know the proper way to accept the award.  To this end, Funny or Die has produced a promo on behalf of the Academy Awards starring Oscar-winner Kevin Kline (Best Supporting Actor for A Fish Called Wanda) and Sir Cecil Worthington (Mike Myers).  The sketch is meant to poke fun at the importance of the statue, but Worthington is really more of a reminder of the Academy’s largest voting block: old white men who have never won an Oscar.

Hit the jump to check out the promo.  The 84th Academy Awards air live this Sunday on ABC at 7pm EST.

Mike Myers Writing an AUSTIN POWERS Stage Musical That Will Serve as a Prequel to the Movies

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 12th, 2011 at 8:08 pm

Mike Myers will soon bring you another Austin Powers movie, but mere celluloid cannot contain this comic creation.  Myers is working on a story for an Austin Powers musical that will serve as a prequel to the movies.  This will be an origin story that tells how the spy found his mojo in 1960s London, set to the songs of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello.  (I can’t tell if these are examples of the type of music, or if it will be all Bacharach and Costello.  I hope for the latter.)  Myers is not expected to star in the production.  THR reports Casey Nicholaw, the co-director behind the Tony-winning The Book of Mormon, is in talks to direct.

You may recall that the Austin Powers movies have broken into song on a number of occasions.  Hit the jump for a few examples.

Mike Myers Closes Deal to Return in AUSTIN POWERS 4 [UPDATED]

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: August 13th, 2011 at 9:26 am

There have been rumors of an Austin Powers 4 in the works pretty much since Austin Powers in Goldmember grossed nearly $300 million worldwide in 2002.  Some of the talk postulated a movie that centers entirely on Dr. Evil.  That always sounded awful to this writer, so I’m glad to from Hitfix that when Mike Myers closed a deal to return for Austin Powers 4, the deal is to return as Austin Powers.  And as Dr. Evil, and probably as Fat Bastard, too.

Director Jay Roach, the man who directed the first three Austin Powers movies, is not confirmed for the sequel.  But during press for his last movie, Dinner for Schmucks, he was already talking about ideas for Austin Powers 4, specifically how he would like to do it in 3D.  Read what he had to say after the jump.

[Update: Deadline reports that Myers hasn't officially signed a deal for Austin Powers 4 yet, but his reps came to New Line this week to express interest in the deal. In short, AP4 is most likely happening, but it may not be official just yet.]

SNL Clips: WAYNE’S WORLD Oscar Edition, THE ROOMMATE Parody, and a Busy James Franco

Last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live with host Dana Carvey had a high ratio of movie-related comedy, kicking off with Carvey reuniting with Mike Myers for a Wayne’s World segment that breaks down the Oscar nominees.  Neither Wayne nor Garth have seen it, but naturally their favorite film of the year is Winter’s Bone.

There was also a parody of The Roommate (starring Justin Bieber and Andy Samberg Sir Ben Kingsley), insight into the ubiqutous James Franco (“I like having jobs!”), and a slew of celebrity impressions including Ice-T, Eddie Murphy, and Anna Faris.  View the clips after the jump.

SHREK: THE WHOLE STORY Blu-Ray Review

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 2nd, 2011 at 10:20 am

When DreamWorks SKG was formed, former Disney Animation guru Jeffery Katzenberg was intent on making animated films at his newly created movie studio. By 2000, the studio already had two animated films under their belt (Antz and The Prince of Egypt) and their focus was on 2D animation. While Katzenberg was determined to re-capture the 2D animation magic he enjoyed while at Disney, a handful of animators were working on the “ugly duckling” film of the studio: a weird little picture called Shrek. Fast-forward to the critical and financial disaster that was The Road to El Dorado in the midst of Pixar’s wild success with 3D animated films, and everyone’s attention focused on the only 3D film the studio had in the pipeline, Shrek.

What began as a laborious project, on which animators were sent to work as punishment, suddenly became the studio’s saving grace.  Witty, edgy, and ballsy as hell, Shrek was the anti-Disney film; a giant middle finger from Jeffery Katzenberg to those at Disney that had ousted him so suddenly. An instant smash-hit, the film spawned the studio’s first franchise and a merchandising cash-cow. Now, Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After are available together on Blu-ray for the first time. My review of the Shrek: The Whole Story box set after the jump.

Mike Myers to Voice Pepé Le Pew in Live-Action/CGI Adaptation

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 7th, 2010 at 8:37 am

mike_myers_pepe_le_pew_slice_01

Mike Myers is set to voice the overly-amorous skunk Pepé Le Pew in a new live-action/CGI adaptation.  Vulture reports that Warner Bros. is trying to take advantage of their cast of Looney Tunes characters, but I personally think Le Pew is an odd place to start.  All of his shorts were the same: Penelope Pussycat gets white paint on her, Le Pew thinks she’s a skunk, and then tries to mount her for the rest of the sketch until he discovers she’s actually a cat.  However, the character did star in the Oscar-winning animated short For Scent-imental Reasons in 1949, so maybe his shtick wasn’t tired back then.

But how do you make that character appealing over sixty years later?  Live-action/CGI hybrid!  In the upcoming adaptation, Le Pew and Penelope will be CGI but everything else will be live-action.  Market-research-that-I-just-made-up shows that kids will only like classic cartoon characters if those characters are placed in live-action settings.

Director Jay Roach Exclusive Interview DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS; Would Like to do AUSTIN POWERS 4 in 3D, and a Lot More

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: July 29th, 2010 at 10:11 pm

Unlike some directors that crave the spotlight, Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Meet the Fockers, Recount) is more man of mystery.  That’s because even though he’s directed some of the biggest comedies of the last decade, I’ve rarely seen him do interviews and you don’t read his name in the trades everyday like some of his peers.  So when I found out I’d landed an exclusive interview for his new movie Dinner For Schmucks, I wasn’t sure if Roach would be guarded, or if he’d be willing to talk about anything.

Thankfully, Roach couldn’t have been nicer and you can read or listen to the interview after the jump.  During the almost thirty minutes we talked about why he makes so few films and why he’s so selective, how does he find his projects, he talked about a project that almost got made called Used Guys, improv vs. scripted, making Dinner For Schmucks, deleted scenes, the mice and how they were made, digital vs. film, 3D, and of course we talked about whether or not he’ll make another Austin Powers movie with Mike Myers.

And for fans of Austin Powers, Roach said, “If we ever did an Austin Powers 4, I would love to do Dr. Evil’s world in 3D. It would be fantastic.  It’d be great to use it as a one-world as 3D and the other world is…”  So much more after the jump:

Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas and Ryan Seacrest Interview SHREK FOREVER AFTER

Last weekend, DreamWorks Animation held a press day for Shrek Forever After (also known as Shrek the Final Chapter).  While some press days feature roundtable interviews with some of the cast, DreamWorks pulled out the big guns as they got the entire voice cast to talk to the press – including Eddie Murphy.  For those that don’t know, Murphy rarely does any press.  In fact, I’ve worked for five years at Collider and this was the first time I’ve ever seen him do any.

Anyway, if you’d like to hear what Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, Jon Hamm, Walt Dohrn, Craig Robinson and Ryan Seacrest had to say about Shrek Forever After…hit the jump.  I’ve included a transcript of the press conference as well as the audio.  This is one of those interviews that’s much better to listen to.

This weekend is also the press junket for the movie here in Los Angeles and I’m doing interviews with the entire cast and the filmmakers.  Check back for those very soon. Until then, hit the jump to watch the videos:

New SHREK FOREVER AFTER Clip Featuring Puss in Boots

A new clip for DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After has landed online.  Billed as the “final” chapter in the series (but there’s so much more money to suck from the franchise!), this latest installment has Shrek traveling to an alternate universe after he’s swindled by Rumplestiltskin.  In this alternate Far Far Away, Donkey is still chained to a cart, Fiona is fighting for survival alongside her fellow ogres, and as we see in this clip, Puss in Boots has become a fat cat.  Not a greedy Wall Street tycoon, but literally an overweight feline.  The clip spends a minute making jokes at the characters heft and lack of boots.

Hit the jump to check out the clip along with the official synopsis.  Shrek Forever After hits theaters in 3D on May 21st.

New Posters for SHREK FOREVER AFTER and THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE

New Posters for SHREK FOREVER AFTER and THE SORCERERS APPRENTICE.jpg

DreamWorks and Walt Disney have released new posters for Shrek Forever After and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  Of the two, I really dig the The Sorcerer’s Apprentice poster as it’s simple and effective.  Also, rather than screaming who directed, starred or produced the movie, it’s selling you more on the mystery and magic – which is what you want to do with this film.  Check out the posters after the jump.

18 High Res Images from SHREK FOREVER AFTER

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: April 12th, 2010 at 8:26 pm

slice_shrek_forever_after_movie_poster_01.jpg

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount have released a bunch of new Shrek Forever After images as part of an “early” look at the film.   With a release date of May 21st, I’m a bit surprised they’re releasing so many images this early.  But I’m not a marketing guy, and both studios clearly know how to open a movie.

As I have said a few times, I saw the first 30 minutes of Shrek Forever After a few months ago and thought it looked pretty good.  And this is coming from someone that did hated the previous two films.  Will the fourth installment be good?  Can Mike Myers end his run of bad films?  We’ll all know next month.  Until then, hit the jump to check out the 18 images we were sent:

New SHREK FOREVER AFTER Trailer

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: March 11th, 2010 at 6:12 pm

slice_shrek_forever_after_movie_poster_01.jpg

DreamWorks has released the first real trailer for Shrek Forever After and you can watch it after the jump.  While the last two Shrek movies might have soured you to caring about the 4th and final installment, I saw the first 30 minutes of Shrek Forever After two months ago and actually really liked the footage.  And this is coming from someone that hated the last two films.

The basic premise of the 4th film is Shrek is tired of his life and family and he makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to get a day to himself, away from everyone and everything.  But what Shrek doesn’t know is Rumpelstiltskin is out for himself and his magic contracts are not as clear as he lets on.  So while Shrek expected to go back home after a short one day vacation, he awakens in a universe where no one knows him and he’s no longer married to Fiona.  Needless to say, the rest of the film is about returning everything to normal….
