This Friday, February 11th at 6:30 p.m. ET The Hub (formerly Discovery Kids) will roll out the latest animated iteration of Transformers via its series Transformers: Prime. Having recently caught the show’s pilot episode, I’ll briefly synthesize the series as such: Transformers: Prime seems to be set in an alternate Transformers universe free of either Sam Witwicky or a giant planet-devouring Orson Welles. In the series, Optimus remarks that it’s been three years since the last Decepticon attack. This, of course, is rather short lived as Megatron rises from wherever he’s been hiding and attempts to raise an undead army of Transformers using something called dark energon (don’t ask) to defeat the Autobots and destroy/enslave all of humanity.
With this synopsis in mind, I had recently had the opportunity to catch up with four gentlemen who are heavily involved with Transformers: Prime – executive producers Roberto Orci and Jeff Kline, Vice President of Development for Hasbro Studios, Mike Vogel, and Director of Programming for The Hub, Scott Pennington. In a lengthy roundtable interview, the four discussed a ton of topics including Bumblebee’s inability to speak the human language, casting Frank Welker and Jeffrey Combs, the future of the series, and my questions regarding some of the show’s robot/human romantic chemistry. Check out what each had to say after the jump:

The Romantic comedy, much like a successful relationship, is tricky business. Post-There’s Something About Mary, it’s been found that mixing some harder R-rated gags with a sweet center can get both men and women interested in a film, and Judd Apatow’s first two movies worked perfectly at balancing this, but also changing one’s expectations of how the love and the sex were going to play out. She’s out of My League is definitely from the Judd Apatow sensibility in that it’s got a group of guys who are friends with the schlubby lead (Jay Baruchel) and they gawk at his strange relationship with a total hottie (Alice Eve). My review of the Blu-ray of She’s out of My League after the jump.

The casting madness for Joe Johnston’s The First Avenger: Captain America continues as now Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) has been linked to the title role. Adding to the insanity, Deadline reports that Keira Knightley, Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League), and Emily Blunt are under consideration to play the female lead, which looks to be either Cap’s WWII girlfriend Peggy Carter or superhero Golden Girl (aka Betsy Ross).
Earlier today, we reported that Ryan Phillippe was also being considered for the role, but regarding Tatum, Deadline says that the ball is in Marvel’s court to make an offer since the actor has become bankable after G.I. Joe and his latest film, Dear John. Other candidates in the running include Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), and Wilson Bethel (HBO’s Generation Kill).

I have an exclusive announcement: I am under consideration for the lead role in The First Avenger: Captain America. Well okay, not yet exactly. But once they cycle through every young white male in Hollywood, they’ll get to my alliterative name.
The tale of super soldier Steve Rogers is one of the hottest untapped superhero properties on the market, so this is obviously a huge role for whoever lands it, but it’s getting difficult to keep track of all the contenders. The first we heard, John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger, Scott Porter, Mike Vogel, Chace Crawford, Garrett Hedlund, and Jensen Ackles were all on the shortlist. After a short-lived rumor that Krasinski was a lock came word that he was anything but; in fact, Tron: Legacy star Hedlund and Vogel (Cloverfield) made it to the top of the initial heap, now joined by Fantastic Four‘s Chris Evans. To add to the confusion, Hitfix has another name for us that teases great things: Ryan Phillippe. Details on what Marvel is trying to tell us after the jump.

On the surface She’s Out of My League is a fairly innocuous comedy. But there’s something cynical about the whole proceedings as it feels not only like a clone of a Judd Apatow movie, but a cheap knock-off that not only mimics the writer-director’s comedies, but also fails to understand that they feature worthwhile characters who develop over the course of the picture. The story of a loser who manages to start dating a woman who’s “out of his league” is a cliché, but rather than parody the lame-guy-gets-hot-girl relationship we see at the end of most guy-driven comedies, She’s Out of My League chooses to blindly indulge the absurdity as it tries to copy down Apatow’s winning formula.

Opening this Friday is She’s Out of My League. The movie stars Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve , T.J. Miller, Mike Vogel, Nate Torrence, Krysten Ritter, Geoff Stults and Lindsay Sloane. The premise is Baruchel plays an average Joe – with not much going for him – when out of the blue a successful and gorgeous woman falls for him (Alice Eve). He’s stunned. So are his friends. The big question is… how does he keep the girl?
To help promote the film, I recently got to speak with Alice Eve and Krysten Ritter. We talked about doing press, how they got involved in the project, filming in Pittsburgh, and do they agree with the film’s logic about only being able to date within two of your number. Meaning if you’re a six, the highest you can reach is an eight. Hit the jump to see what they had to say:

Well, so much for John Krasinski as a lock for The First Avenger: Captain America. Deadline has a report which narrows down the original list of contenders and adds a couple that Marvel are seriously considering to bring the super soldier to the silver screen. According to the report, Krasinski is no longer under serious consideration; likewise, four other actors have been erased from the same short list Chace Crawford, Scott Porter, Michael Cassidy, and Patrick Flueger.
Now Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston are mulling over just three names: Chris Evans, Mike Vogel, and Garrett Hedlund. Details on each actor and what they could bring to the role after the jump.

The synopsis for The First Avenger: Captain America might have been released thanks to a casting announcement on featurecasting.com. Also, thanks to the same release, it’s looking like filming is set to begin on June 28, 2010. With a release date of July 22, 2011, and the fact that director Joe Johnston recently told me he’s busy in pre-production, the filming date sounds pretty accurate.

UPDATE: Marvel has contacted us to let us know the synopsis is not accurate.

John Krasinski, Scott Porter, Garrett Hedlund, Jensen Ackles, Chace Crawford, Michael Cassidy, and Mike Vogel are all on the short-list for The First Avenger: Captain America. According to THR, the seven actors have screen-tested for the role or are expected to test screen over the next two weeks. In a recent interview, director Joe Johnston (The Wolfman), says he expects to have the role of the Marvel superhero cast by March 1st.
Krasinski is the best known of the bunch because of The Office and co-starring last year in wide release movies like Away We Go and It’s Complicated. As for the six others, you have Michael Cassidy who screen-tested for the Superman movie when McG was set to direct, Patrick Flueger of The 4400 and a supporting role in Brothers), Scott Porter of Friday Night Lights (the TV series) and Speed Racer, and Mike Vogel who starred in Cloverfield. And then you have Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) who’s in talks to screen test. Garrett Hedlund (Eragon, the upcoming Tron Legacy) and Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) both are under consideration but are currently out of the running due to scheduling conflicts (word to Ackles: leave Supernatural behind and go for this role).
Captain America is the final piece in creating the Marvel’s superhero team-up of The Avengers with Iron Man/Tony Scott (Robert Downey Jr.) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) already in play. Hit the jump for my thoughts on the potential Captains, details for those unfamiliar with the character, and what we know about the upcoming movie, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 22, 2011.
