We’ve got a few casting stories to share this evening. Briefly:

The very funny Bill Hader is in talks to star in the indie comedy Lawless, produced by Mike White and David Bernad.
Hailee Steinfeld has been tapped to star opposite Sam Worthington in director Phillip Noyce’s thriller For the Dogs.
Billy Crystal will lead the retirement community sex comedy Winter’s Discontent for director Frank Oz.
Shameless star Jeremy Allen White has landed the lead in DreamWorks’ found-footage time travel film Glimmer.

Hit the jump for more on all of the aforementioned films.

First up, SNL veteran Bill Hader may soon be toplining a film of his own, as THR reports that the actor is in talks to star in the comedy Lawless. Yes Man screenwriters Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel are making their directorial debut on the project, and Enlightened’s Mike White is onboard to produce. Should he sign on, Hader would star as a high school reunion chairman in Middle American who is tasked with getting the most popular guy in high school to show up for the reunion. Said popular guy is now a commercials actor in L.A., so the committee chairman flies out to California to try and get him to attend. Producers are hoping to start production this summer in Atlanta.

Additionally, Deadline reports that True Grit actress Hailee Steinfeld has been set to star opposite Sam Worthington in the thriller For the Dogs. Oren Moverman (Rampart) wrote the script based on the novel of the same name by Kevin Wignall, and ...

HBO has announced that the second seasons of the original comedy series Girls and Enlightened will debut in January of 2013. The first seasons of Girls and Enlightened began airing in April and October, respectively, but the network now has a hole to fill in January after the unexpected cancellation of Luck. I’ve yet to catch Enlightened, but I was a big fan of Lena Dunham’s Girls. At once raw, hilarious, candid, and sweet, Girls proved to be one of the most entertaining offerings of the 2011-2012 TV season.

For those keeping score at home, next up on HBO’s original programming docket after True Blood and The Newsroom wrap up their current seasons is Boardwalk Empire and Treme, which both premiere in September. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Here’s the press release:
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1, 2012 – HBO has confirmed the second-season debuts of the acclaimed series ENLIGHTENED and GIRLS, with both shows scheduled to kick off ten-episode second seasons in Jan. 2013.

ENLIGHTENED tells the story of an ambitious executive at a global conglomerate, who returns to her fractured life after a humiliating public breakdown, determined to lead a more enlightened existence. But her newfound noble intentions only ratchet up the drama, wreaking unexpected havoc on those around her. Laura Dern stars in the series, which she executive produces along with Mike White, who also co-stars, writes and directs. The show concluded its first season in Dec. 2011, with Dern receiving a 2012 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an ...

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a high priority at Lionsgate, but they're having trouble putting it together. In the early days, David O. Russell was set to direct Natalie Portman before both bailed (Portman stayed on as producer). Mike White (Year of the Dog) was hired to replace Russell, but the writer/director has a scheduling conflict with HBO, presumably for his series Enlightened. White released a gracious statement to Deadline:
"I loved the project and looked forward to working with Lionsgate. Unfortunately, the timing could not be worked out. I wish them the best with the movie."
Now Lionsgate must return to the drawing board, which previously included David Slade, Jonathan Demme, and Matt Reeves among others. It's an enticing project, so I'm sure they'll lure a talented filmmaker -- one that'll stick -- sooner or later. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the source material, a tongue-in-cheek novel by Seth Grahme-Smith.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton and the dead are returning to life! Writer/director Mike White has moved from "top contender" to "signed on" to direct Lionsgate's adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Thus ends the whirlwind of candidates rumored when once-attached director David O. Russell departed to pursue other projects. Up next: find an actress to replace Natalie Portman in the lead role.

White made his name first as a writer with about a dozen writing credits on both film and TV (School of Rock, Orange County, Freaks and Geeks) compared to his one as a director (Year of the Dog). However, Variety makes no note whether or not White's capable eye will take a pass at the script. The first draft was written by Seth Grahme-Smith, the author of the source novel which inserts zombies into the classic Jane Austen tale. Hit the jump for a synopsis.

The directing gig for the upcoming adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s horror-comedy parody novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is nearly settled. David O. Russell was originally going to direct (Three Kings), but left the project to direct an adaptation of the video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune instead.

After that, such directors as David Slade (Hard Candy), Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), Mike Newell (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), Neil Marshall (The Descent), Mike White (Year of the Dog), and the directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) were in the running. Now, Mike White has emerged as the top contender to helm the film. Hit the jump to find out why White is a surprising choice and, whom White might direct if he gets the job.

As you can guess by the book’s title, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a retelling of Jane Austen’s seminal novel… but with zombies. The project is described as a “Victorian-era Zombieland," and whoever directs the film will have to balance the novel’s quirky mix of comedy, horror, romance, and costume drama on screen.

According to 24 Frames, Mike White has become the top choice because of this. This is a bit of surprising news given that White is a relatively inexperienced director since he has only directed one film: Year of the Dog. However, his past screenwriting credits show that he can handle broad comedy (School of Rock) and dark comedy (Chuck and ...

The list to direct the adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's horror-comedy parody novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is growing after David O. Russell left the project at the beginning of the month. As we previously reported, David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) is on the list. Deadline updated their original story by reporting that Mike Newell (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) and Neil Marshall (Centurion) are also in the running. TheWrap is also throwing out some interesting names circling the project: Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs), Matt Reeves (Let Me In), Mike White (The Year of the Dog), and the directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs). Hit the jump for more details on these potential helmers.

For those who don't know, Grahame-Smith's novel takes Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and throws zombies into the mix (Grahame-Smith didn't give his book a misleading title). The project is being described as a "Victorian-era Zombieland", and it's interesting to see how the potential directors fall along the genre spectrum when you look at their previous work. Slade, Marshall, and Reeves are more on the horror-action side, White and Lord/Miller are known for comedy, and Demme and Newell have the most eclectic filmographies of the bunch.

Lord and Miller are currently attached to an adaptation of 21 Jump Street, but that project may be delayed since Sony may want Emma Stone to costar with Jonah Hill in the film, but will wait until she's ...

As more name actors make the jump back and forth from the silver screen to the flickering box, the great divide of "success" between film and television actors has been dwindling. Even further evidence of this closing gap can be seen in the talent behind the camera. While film directors often direct the pilot of a new series for a big boost in viewership, more and more directors are being utilized for single episodes of series and HBO seems to have cornered the market. Deadline reports the cable network's new comedy series Enlightened has a lined up an impressive group to helm the episodes, including Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs)

Hit the jump for the rest of the directors and a refresher on the series' story.

John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Itch), Phil Morrison (Junebug), Nicole Holofcener (Friends with Money), and Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt) will join Demme in directing series stars Luke Wilson (Middle Men, Idiocracy) and Laura Dern (Recount, Jurassic Park) in the story of a a self-destructive woman (Dern) who has a spiritual awakening and decides to live an enlightened life, which creates havoc at home and work. Wilson will play Dern's disorganized and drug-addled husband.

Back in April, THR (Link 2) reported HBO had picked up the series for at least nine episodes. Mike White, who has directed The Year of the Dog and produced films like School of Rock, developed and directed the pilot, and Demme is onboard for a couple ...

Along with being the producer of Jared and Jerusha Hess' latest film, "Gentlemen Broncos", Mike White also plays the role of Dusty. In the film's unusual world, in which 17-year-old Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano) has his prized science-fiction story stolen by his idol, Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement), at a writers camp, Dusty is an odd, scraggly-haired member of the Purvis' church who takes his giant albino snake with him everywhere.

At the press day for the film, Mike White talked about working with his friends, the Hesses, and bonding with the snake, known as Peaches.

Question: Was Dusty a difficult character to play?

Mike: I don't think I'm like Dusty, but I'm not afraid to be weird, so I wasn't going to resist any of Jared's impulses. Ultimately, the vision of the character was his, but I was weird enough to go with it.

How much did you contribute to the look of the character?

Mike: Very little. Do you think I would choose to look like that? Even my mom started crying, when she saw the preview. She was like, "That's not your best look." I think of him as the albino Slick Rick. It was pretty fun to walk around Salt Lake City, on breaks from the set, and go to Chipotle and scare everybody. At first, I thought I was going to get beaten up, but then I realized that everybody was more afraid that I was a crackhead who was coming to beat them up.

What was the snake like ...

Writer, director, producer and actor Mike White is known for his rather eclectic dramedies, such as Chuck & Buck, The Good Girl, School of Rock, Nacho Libre and Year of the Dog, which is totally fine with him. Not looking to be a producer or director for hire, he enjoys working with his friends, like Jared and Jerusha Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) on their latest film, Gentlemen Broncos, about a lovable underdog (played by Michael Angarano) whose passion for writing science-fiction novels is turned upside down when his idol, the celebrated fantasy author Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement), steals his story at a writers camp.

At the press day for the film, Mike White gave some updates on what he's currently working on, including the HBO pilot Enlightened, headed into production in January 2010, as well as the status of Them (with Edgar Wright) and School of Rock 2. Look for what he said on "Gentlemen Broncos" very soon.

Question: Being a producer, writer, director and actor, what do you want to do next?

Mike: I'd like to go back on The Amazing Race. I'd drop it all to go back on the show. But, I wrote a pilot for HBO that I'm directing, and that's what I'm doing next.

What is the pilot about?

Mike: It's a half-hour show with Laura Dern. It's about a woman who has a nervous breakdown, and she goes and gets "help." While she's away, she has an enlightened experience and she comes back to build all the bridges she's ...

Opening on October 30th is director Jared Hess' ("Napoleon Dynamite") new movie "Gentlemen Broncos". While the reviews out of Fantastic Fest were not pretty, this is one of those movies I still want to see due to the cast. After all, who isn't a fan of Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement. Anyway, Fox Searchlight has released two clips from the movie and you can watch them after the jump. I've also posted the synopsis if you're not familiar with the film.

GENTLEMEN BRONCOS
Release: October 30, 2009
Directed by: Jared Hess
Written by: Jared Hess & Jerusha Hess
Produced by Mike White, John J. Kelly
Executive Produced by Ben LeClair, Jerusha Hess, Jared Hess
Cast: Michael Angarano, Jennifer Coolidge, Jemaine Clement, Mike White, Hector Jimenez, Halley Feiffer, Josh Pais and Sam Rockwell
Benjamin (Michael Angarano), home-schooled by his eccentric mother (Jennifer Coolidge), is a loveable loner whose passion for writing leads him on an offbeat and hilarious journey as his story first gets ripped off by the legendary fantasy novelist, Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement) and then is adapted into a disastrous movie by the small town's most prolific homespun filmmaker.

Continuing in their quest to regain television network preeminence, HBO has given the greenlight to yet another pilot. "Enlightened", the tentatively-titled, single camera comedy which stars Laura Dern, was developed by "School of Rock scribe Mike White. More after the jump.

Unlike Martin Scorsese's "Boardwalk Empire" (which received an 11 episode order earlier this week) and "Game of Thrones" (which will film its pilot this October) HBO's newest pilot venture falls firmly into their "comedy" block - currently populated by only "Entourage" and "Hung" in anticipation of the eminent return of Larry David.

Also unlike the new HBO dramas, "Enlightened" was put on a fast development track due mainly to Laura Dern's much-lauded performance as Katherine Harris in the network's own "Recount" back in 2008. White, who had directed Dern in 2007's "Year of the Dog", will direct the pilot episode of the series which has Dern playing a "self-destructive woman who has a spiritual awakening."

The adorable White, who won America's heart by taking his Dad on last season's "The Amazing Race", told The Hollywood Reporter that he was "totally stoked" to be doing a show at HBO with Laura Dern... see what I mean? Adorable!

A slew of posters hit the web today (I'm not sure the quantity of a "slew" but we have four posters below) and I have witty comments on all of them that I'm sure you will enjoy. Or you can just skip my words (and make me sad) and just look at the posters. You'll find both after the jump.

Fox Searchlight has released the poster for Mira Nair's "Amelia" which is about the comical life and times of continually confused maid Amelia Bedelia...shit, I messed up. It's apparently about the famous female aviator Amelia Earhart (played by Hilary Swank) who set many records during her lifetime. She was also one of the first people to ever discover the Bermuda Triangle.

Too soon? You can ponder that question as look at the poster below. "Amelia" hits theatres on October 23rd.

We also have the poster for "Gentleman Broncos" starring Jemaine Clement and Michael Angarano along with Jennifer Coolidge, Mike White, and Sam Rockwell. It's a poster that really wants you to know it's by the director of "Napoleon Dynamite". The problem is I don't know how much juice is left in using that film as a marketing tool. Fox Searchlight seems to specialize in films that look like they would be cult films but they blow up and become major hits. There's nothing wrong with that but they all have to suffer the inevitable backlash and I'm wondering if "Broncos" is going to suffer the aftershocks of that backlash.

Check out the poster below. ...

Actor, screenwriter and "The Amazing Race" castoff Mike White has sold his action comedy spec script "Babe in the Woods" to Columbia Pictures. The writer of such comedies as "School of Rock" and "Nacho Libre" will produce "Babe" - about a college coed who becomes a target for the New Jersey mob - through his own Rip Cord productions. According to Variety, White will first turn in a "polished" version of his script before Columbia puts out the call for a director and cast. We'll keep you posted.

When Jared Hess's ("Napoleon Dynamite", "Nacho Libre") new film "Gentlemen Broncos" was announced as the opening film at next month's Fantastic Fest, I figured a theatrical release date wasn't too far behind. It seems my assumption was correct as Fox Searchlight has just announced an October 30th release.

Unfortunately, their announcement didn't say if it's a limited opening or a wide release. But any release date is great news as Jared's new film stars Michael Angarano, Jennifer Coolidge, Jemaine Clement, Mike White and Sam Rockwell. If you don't know about the film, the synopsis is after the jump:

Benjamin (Michael Angarano), home-schooled by his eccentric mother (Jennifer Coolidge), is a loveable loner whose passion for writing leads him on an offbeat and hilarious journey as his story first gets ripped off by the legendary fantasy novelist, Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement) and then is adapted into a disastrous movie by the small town's most prolific homespun filmmaker.
With the popularity of "Flight of the Conchords", the casting of Jemaine Clement adds another dimension to the film. Right now no one I know has seen the movie, but we'll all know next month if "Gentlemen Broncos" is a winner.
