Hot on the heels of the news that Paramount is pushing back G.I. Joe: Retalitation to March of 2013 at the last minute, Universal has swooped in and grabbed the film’s old release slot of June 29th for the comedy Ted. The film is Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut and this allows the comedy to open before the summer’s big superhero pics, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises, dominate the box office. It’s a smart move on Universal’s part, as late June is void of any adult comedy releases. Ted was previously set for July 13th, but now the film faces off against Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper pic Magic Mike, the dramedy People Like Us, and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection (sigh).
Ted stars Mark Wahlberg as a 35-year-old man who’s still best friends with his teddy bear, Ted (voiced and mo-capped by Macfarlane), after his childhood wish brought the stuffed animal to life. The first red-band trailer was a bit polarizing, but I thought Wahlberg hit all the right comedic notes and I’m looking forward to the film.

You have 90 minutes left to live, what do you do? That’s the premise of The Angriest Man in Brooklyn, a new screenplay from Daniel Tapitz (Red Dog) to be directed by Phil Alden Robinson (The Sum of All Fears). The picture centers on the fallout after a stand-in doctor mistakenly tells an obnoxious patient that he has an hour-and-a-half left to live. While the patient goes on a tirade in New York City, attempting to right all the wrongs in his life, the doctor tries in vain to track him down. The high concept comedy stars Robin Williams, Mila Kunis and Peter Dinklage, and has also snared Melissa Leo and James Earl Jones. The Angriest Man in Brooklyn is set to start filming this September in Brooklyn. Hit the jump for more.

By now, we’re all aware that James Franco is a fairly multifaceted fella. He dips his toe in comedy, drama, short films, experimental films, and higher education. For his latest project, he’s assembled an impressive cast for two feature films based on a couple of books of poems. Variety reports that Franco stars alongside Mila Kunis and Jessica Chastain in an adaptation of the 1983 book of poems Tar by C.K Williams, and he also enlisted Olivia Wilde, Chloe Sevigny and Whoopi Goldberg for an adaptation of Black Dog, Red Dog by Stephen Dobyns.
For Tar, Franco and executive producer Victorino Noval selected 10 directors via a competition at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts to helm segments of the film. He also used a similar formula for Black Dog, Red Dog. Tar is completed and could premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, while Black Dog is still in the editing phase. They’re both interesting projects, and it’s nice of Franco to give NYU students a shot and something as high profile as this. The actor recently wrapped Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful and will next star in Seth Rogen’s directorial debut The End of the World. He can also be seen playing a cornrowed drug dealer in Spring Breakers. No word on where Franco obtained the cloning technology necessary to do all the things he’s done in the past five years.

Tonight’s batch of set photos is connected by a That 70s Show theme. Not only are Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher featured, but both are again styled in the fashion of the 70s for their respective period piece:

The green-band trailer for Ted has gone online. Directed by Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), the movie stars Mark Wahlberg as a 35-year-old man who’s still best friends with his teddy bear, Ted (voiced and mo-capped by Macfarlane), after his childhood wish brought the stuffed animal to life. Now the bear is a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking freeloader who’s creating tension between the guy and the guy’s girlfriend (Mila Kunis). Fans of Macfarlane’s TV shows will note the familiar markers: a Peter Griffin voice for Ted (to the point where it’s kind of distracting), and everyone in the world naturally accepting a supernatural character. I really enjoyed the red-band trailer (I can’t get the “Thunder Song” out of my head), and while this new one isn’t quite as good, there’s a great joke near the end.

The first trailer and a batch of images from Seth MacFarlane‘s feature directorial debut Ted have gone online. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a grown man whose childhood wish that his teddy bear would come to life suddenly comes true. The catch is that the bear (played by Macfarlane using motion-capture) turns out to be a swearing, pot-smoking wreck. The trailer is pretty fantastic, especially since it’s red band. Wahlberg lets his “fuck”-laden Boston accent fly, and he and Ted look to have some incredibly entertaining chemistry. The bear is the most adorable foul-mouthed, dirty-minded stuffed animal you’ll ever come across and I’m kind of in love with him.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and images. The film also stars Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, Patrick Warburton, Giovanni Ribisi and the voice of MacFarlane as Ted. Ted opens July 13th.

Directors Andy and Lana Wachowski recently wrapped an incredibly ambitious adaptation of the novel Cloud Atlas, and they’re looking to set up their next project straight away. Deadline reports that Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis have been offered the leads in the sci-fi pic Jupiter Ascending for Warner Bros. Plot details are, predictably, under tight wraps, but apparently Jupiter Ascending will act as the siblings’ first major sci-fi action franchise since The Matrix. I’ve liked Tatum more and more with each subsequent film he’s been in (the guy kills in 21 Jump Street) and Kunis is unendingly charming, so I’m all for this casting choice. Hit the jump for more.

Clive Owen and Billy Crudup are set to lead Guillaume Canet‘s crime thriller Blood Ties. Based off the French novel Les liens du sang, Canet’s English-language debut “centers on a younger brother (Crudup) who has to ask his convict older brother (Owen) to go back into the underworld to help out the family.” As we reported back in November, Mark Wahlberg, Zoe Saldana, and Marion Cotillard were circling the picture. In addition to the casting news regarding Owen and Crudup, THR reports that Saldana and Cotillard have signed on along with Mila Kunis and James Caan. Kunis and Cotillard will play love interests. Bullhead star Matthias Schoenaerts has been offered role, and if he signs on, this cast will be even more impressive.
Canet co-wrote the script for Blood Ties with We Own the Night writer-director James Gray. For those unfamiliar with Canet, I strongly recommend checking out this 2006 mystery flick Tell No One. If the financing on Blood Ties comes together, filming will begin in April in New York.

A natural at voice-work, the talented Mila Kunis is set to lend her pipes to the R-rated stop-motion animated comedy Hell & Back. The film follows two best friends as they rescue their buddy who has been accidentally dragged to Hell. The previously announced voice cast includes Nick Swardson and TJ Miller as the leads, with Rob Riggle, Brian Posehn, and Kumail Najiani rounding out the supporting cast. Kunis will play Deema, a female demon who’s actually half-human. Her character is a bit of a rogue and is described as “the Han Solo of the film.”
Kunis will next be seen this summer alongside Mark Wahlberg in Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s feature directing debut Ted, followed by Sam Raimi’s Wizard of Oz prequel Oz the Great and Powerful in 2013. She’s also being eyed to play Jackie Kennedy in Lee Daniels‘ The Butler. Hit the jump to read the full press release regarding Hell & Back.

Although her last live-action role was in 1998’s Beloved, Oprah Winfrey is considering a return to the big screen. The project that caught her discerning eye was the story of Eugene Allen, a black man who served under eight U.S. Presidents from 1952 to 1986 as the White House butler. From Precious director, Lee Daniels, comes The Butler, the story of Allen’s service in the White House through such pivotal moments in history as the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. Daniels is reportedly interested in David Oyelowo (Red Tails) to play Allen; Winfrey would play his wife. It’s also being reported that Mila Kunis (Black Swan) and John Cusack (High Fidelity) have been approached to play Jackie Kennedy and Richard Nixon, respectively. Hit the jump for more.

Principal photography has begun on Sam Raimi’s next film, Oz The Great and Powerful and now we have the first official synopsis for the film. We now know that the eponymous’ wizard’s real name is Oscar Diggs. Diggs is “a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics” who finds himself transported to Oz and drawn into a battle between the three witches Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams). The film also stars Zach Braff as Diggs’ circus assistant, and Braff will also lend his vocal talents to one of the CGI creatures in the story — Finley, the winged monkey who accompanies the magician on his journey to Oz. I’ve always said that the only thing better than a monkey sidekick is a flying monkey sidekick.
Hit the jump for the full synopsis and press release. Oz The Great and Powerful is set to open on March 8, 2013.

Opening Friday is Friends with Benefits, which is Will Gluck’s follow up to Easy A. Not to be confused with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher’s similarly themed No Strings Attached, FWB is a hip, sharply written and very R-rated romantic comedy about casual sex starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis.
Recently, I sat down with Timberlake and Kunis to discuss the film. During our interview they told me about their thoughts on the viability of casual sex relationships, acting in the nude, some of their favorite songs going up, Kunis’s upcoming Seth McFarlane directed Ted and Timberlake’s Andrew Niccol directed In Time and more. Hit the jump to watch.

Since it’s apparently the year of the sex buddy comedy, a new red band trailer for Friends with Benefits has been released. While I’m a fan of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, and quite enjoyed director Will Gluck’s Easy A, this movie just looks painfully unfunny. The newest red band trailer really doesn’t do much to change my mind. The highlights (ie. only amusing parts) are Emma Stone and Andy Samberg, but it seems they only appear for small cameo-ish roles. However, Hunter saw the film and enjoyed it—he’s even mentioned in the ad—so maybe it works better as a whole. But I’m not holding my breath.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson and Richard Jenkins. Friends with Benefits opens July 22nd.
