Theo James Lands Male Lead in DIVERGENT; Aaron Eckhart, Miles Teller, and Ray Stevenson Circling Roles

by     Posted: March 15th, 2013 at 10:41 am

It’s a casting bonanza for director Neil Burger’s (The Illusionist) anticipated adaptation of the popular YA novel Divergent.  The past couple of days have seen the likes of Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Maggie Q (Nikita), Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class), and Ansel Elgort (Carrie remake) join the film’s cast, and now another slew of actors are signing on.  The story takes place in a futuristic society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities, and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) has long been set in the lead role of Tris Prior, a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces termination due to her status as a “Divergent.”

Though the film’s plot has drawn similarities to The Hunger Games, the book received a fair amount of praise from critics, and it’s telling that the film has attracted such talent as Woodley and Kate Winslet.  Now some other impressive actors are signing on, including Theo James who has nabbed the highly coveted male lead.  Hit the jump for more.

Justin Chon and Miles Teller Talk 21 AND OVER, Getting Naked on Film, Childhood Traumas, Binge Drinking, and More

Opening this weekend is 21 and Over, a new alcohol-drenched frat house comedy that marks the directing debut of The Hangover scribes Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. In the film, three high school buddies reunite to celebrate the youngest’s 21st birthday. And then things go horribly, horribly wrong. Alcohol poisoning, angry sorority sisters with twisted hazing rituals, stampeding buffalo and pratfalls from five stories ensue.

Last week, Collider sat down with Miles Teller (Footloose) and Justin Chon (Twilight) to discuss their wild roles in the comedy. During our interview, Teller and Chon discussed getting naked on film, Chon’s deep childhood traumas, Teller urinating on his friends, how I look like a skinny Bradley Cooper and much more.  Hit the jump to watch.

21-and-over-slice

Relativity Media has released a large batch of new high-resolution images from the upcoming college comedy 21 and Over.  Written and directed by The Hangover scribes Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the film stars Justin Chon (Twilight) as a Straight-A student who, on the night of his 21st birthday, has strict orders from his father to rest up for his medical school interview the next morning.  Things go awry when his best friends, played by Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) and Miles Teller (Footloose), surprise him and take him out for a night of debauchery.  Though the film wasn’t initially on my radar, after seeing Teller’s incredible performance in the Sundance hit The Spectacular Now and Astin’s charming work in Pitch Perfect, I’m hoping we’re in for a great new entry in the college comedy genre.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Sarah Wright, Jonathan Keltz, and Francois Chau21 and Over opens on March 1st.

One of my favorite movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director James Ponsoldt (Smashed) and writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber’s (500 Days of Summer) coming of age drama The Spectacular Now.   Led by fantastic lead performances from Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, the film is about two High School seniors that are going in opposite directions.  Sutter Keely (Teller) is the life of the party and loves to drink, while Aimee Finicky (Woodley) is pretty, but shy and removed from the popular crowd.  When Sutter wakes up on Aimee’s lawn after being dumped by his girlfriend, what starts off as a rebound quickly turn into something more.  The film also stars Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Kyle Chandler.  For more on the film, here is Matt’s review.

The day after the world premiere I sat down with Teller and Woodley for an exclusive video interview.  We talked about being at Sundance, how they got cast, the fact that the characters in the film are real and relatable, and more.  In addition, each of them talks about their upcoming projects including The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  Hit the jump to watch.

Sundance 2013: THE SPECTACULAR NOW Review

“Live in the moment” is a nice platitude and a crappy life philosophy.  Vivacity is all well and good.  We should appreciate the present, but we can’t live only for the present.  We have to think about tomorrow because we’re probably going to be there.    In his wonderful new film The Spectacular Now, director James Ponsoldt explore the live-for-the-moment mentality with an authentic and earnest look at high school emotions, anxiety about the future, and first love.   Led by extraordinary performances from stars Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, The Spectacular Now is a thoroughly charming and surprisingly powerful coming-of-age story about the fear of looking ahead and the seductive safety of living in the present.

Some new images have cropped up today for John Moore’s A Good Day to Die Hard and James Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now.  The fifth installment in the Die Hard series features John McClane (Bruce Willis) and his son Jack (Jai Courtney), who are seen amidst a lot of destruction in this new image.  We also have an infographic from the original 1988 film, which is the first in a series that will be released for each film leading up to the February 14th release of A Good Day to Die Hard.

We’ve also got some new images that feature Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Miles Teller (Project X) being all young and cute in The Spectacular Now.  Also starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kyle Chandler, Brie Larson and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the picture  debuts at Sundance this Friday.  Hit the jump to see the new images.

New Trailer for 21 AND OVER Starring Miles Teller, Justin Chon, and Skylar Astin

21 and over skylar astin miles teller justin chon

Relativity has released a new trailer for 21 and Over, a comedy written and directed by The Hangover writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.  The hijinks are kicked off when Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) and Miles Teller (Footloose) surprise their button-downed friend Justin Chon (Twilight) on his 21st birthday.  Although he has an crucial medical school interview the next morning, you can imagine that the boys get into the kind of trouble that can only come from the writers who thought up The Hangover.

21 and Over has a likable young cast, a small touch that should help it land with its target audience (21 and under, natch).  I see enough potential in this and the first to believe in a funny movie with just a bit of heart (friendship is important, guys), but not so much that I’d bet on it.  Watch the trailer after the jump.  21 and Over opens on March 1, 2013.

New Images from EPIC and 21 AND OVER

epic-21-and-over-slice

New images have been released for the animated film Epic and the raunchy comedy 21 and Over.  Both films seem to loudly echo previous flicks.  Epic seems to be very much following in the footsteps of FernGully: The Last Rainforest and Avatar where an outsider learns that the forest is important to people who live in a forest.  As for 21 and Over, writer/directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have returned to the film that made them, The Hangover, with another story about how serious intoxication can lead to chaotic and hilarious consequences.  Judging by the trailer, I’m hoping we get another surprisingly great college comedy like Van Wilder.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Epic opens in 3D on May 24, 2013 and features the voices of Beyonce Knowles, Colin Farrell, Jason Sudekis, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, and Johnny Knoxville21 and Over opens March 1, 2013 and stars Miles Teller, Skyler Astin, and Justin Chon.

Exclusive New Images from 21 AND OVER Starring Miles Teller, Justin Chon, and Skylar Astin

21-and-over-slice

Earlier this week we saw the first trailer for the college comedy 21 and Over, and today we’re happy to debut two exclusive new images from the film.  Written and directed by The Hangover scribes Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the pic stars Justin Chon (Twilight) as a Straight-A student who, on the night of his 21st birthday, has strict orders from his father to rest up for his medical school interview the next morning.  Things go awry when his best friends, played by Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) and Miles Teller (Footloose), surprise him and take him out for a night of debauchery.  These new images tease some of fallout from said debauchery, as Chon’s character finds himself in a rather precarious position.

First Trailer for 21 AND OVER Starring Skylar Astin, Miles Teller, and Justin Chon

Relativity has released the first trailer for 21 and Over, a comedy written and directed by The Hangover writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.  The film stars Justin Chon (Twilight) as a Straight-A student who, on the night of his 21st birthday, has strict orders from his father to rest up for his medical school interview the next morning.  Things go awry when his best friends, played by Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) and Miles Teller (Footloose), surprise him and take him out for a night of debauchery.  Naturally, things go wrong quickly.  Essentially this looks like a college verison of The Hangover, only this time we’ll be following the increasingly outrageous events as they happen rather than simply seeing them in photo form during the credits.  There are a few laughs here and there, and I’m encouraged by Astin and Teller’s previous work so hopefully we’re in for a fun college comedy.

PROJECT X Blu-ray Review

Project X was a surprise of the year, a raunchy teen comedy that took advantage of a budget-trimming found-footage gimmick and was successful enough at the box office to warrant a sequel.  Fans of Superbad, American Pie and The Hangover will find common ground with Project X, but the film goes even farther than any of them dared.  So how can you enjoy the world’s most insane party without risking jail time and millions of dollars in property damage? Pick up Project X on Blu-ray so you can watch the madness from the comfort of your couch.  Hit the jump for my review of director Nima Nourizadeh’s Project X on Blu-ray.
