Oscar News: Nominated Songs May Not Be Performed Live; Milla Jovovich Will Host the Technical Awards; Group Photo from the Nominees Luncheon

The songs are rarely my favorite part of the Oscar ceremony, since the quality of entertainment is so dependent on the nominated performers.  I was really looking forward to this year’s live songs, though.  There are only two, so it would not be a major time suck in the middle of the awards.  And the two nominees are terrific.  “Real in Rio” is infectious and promised a colorful and vibrant production on stage.  “Man or Muppet” would get The Muppets on stage singing a truly clever song, which should be goal #1 in any year that releases a Muppet movie.  And yet Deadline hears the songs may be cut this year.  Said one of their sources: “It seems like a huge missed opportunity to me, and we certainly tried.”  Dude, try harder.  It’s two songs.  Of course, the show is not locked yet, so telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer have time to reconsider before the February 26 broadcast.  I sincerely hope they do.

I’m writing to you this week in full “World Series Mode.” While there are plenty of things going on around the Midwest this time of year (homemade haunted houses are always a welcomed annual treat), a majority of my focus is on trying to will my beloved Cardinals to Fall Classic glory. Combine that with the fact that Batman: Arkham City is consistently calling my name and it’s a wonder that I’m even writing this right now. Hold on, what’s that, Arkham City? Okay, okay…I’ll be there in a second…

…In this week’s installment, you’ll find talk of Transformers 4 and Transformers 5 shooting back-to-back with Jason Statham potentially starring, a six-minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises being attached to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol‘s IMAX release, interviews with director Paul W.S. Anderson and the cast of The Three Musketeers, David Fincher and Rooney Mara talking about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and William Monahan discussing projects including London Boulevard, The Departed sequel, Sin City 2 and more. Milla Jovovich THE THREE MUSKETEERS interview slice

With director Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers opening October 21, Summit Entertainment held a big press junket in London and I got the chance to head across the pond to interview the cast.  Based on Alexandre Dumas’ classic story, The Three Musketeers stars Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, Matthew Macfayden and Mads Mikkelsen.  In the reboot, “the hot-headed young D’Artagnan (Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (MacFadyen, Evans and Stevenson). They must stop the evil Richlieu (Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Jovovich).”  And unlike many films that have been post converted for a 3D release, the Musketeers was shot in 3D and it looks great.  For more on the film, here’s eight clips.

During my interview with Jovovich, we talked about the amazing real world locations they used in Musketeers, filming in 3D, karaoke and the last video game she played.  In addition, she talked about Resident Evil: Retribution (Resident Evil 5) and revealed more details on the Rolls Royce action scene and what locations are being used.  Hit the jump to watch.

Paul W.S. Anderson RESIDENT EVIL RETRIBUTION interview slice

While it may be a little surprising to some, the Resident Evil franchise has broadened its fanbase with each entry. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, the first film debuted in 2002 and each subsequent film in franchise has grossed more than its predecessor, with 2007’s Resident Evil: Afterlife taking in over $230 million in foreign box office alone. Steve got the chance to speak with director Paul W.S. Anderson in London today about his upcoming adaptation of The Three Musketeers, and the director spoke at length about the next installment in the undead franchise Resident Evil: Retribution.

Anderson talked about bringing in the Las Plagas parasite, lifting action set pieces straight from the video games, deciding which new characters to include from the games based on fan’s comments, transitioning the films from straight horror to more action-oriented, filming in Tokyo, Moscow, and North America, and working closely with Capcom to ensure a line of continuity between the movie and game franchises. Hit the jump to see what all Anderson had to say, including the 10 things you need to know about Resident Evil: Retribution.

New Character Posters and Featurette for THE THREE MUSKETEERS

Summit has sent over eight new character posters and a making-of featurette from director Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on The Three Musketeers. Starring Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, Matthew Macfayden and Mads Mikkelsen, the film looks pretty much exactly how you’d expect a Paul W.S. Anderson Musketeers movie to look. I’m no Musketeers enthusiast, so I’m really not offended by Anderson’s updating of the material. That doesn’t mean I want to see it either, though.

Check out the new hero/villain character posters and the “Making of a Musketeer” featurette after the jump. The Three Musketeers hits 3D theaters on October 21st.

Are Kate Beckinsale, Milla Jovovich and Sofia Vergara Starring in the DANGER GIRL Movie?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: August 22nd, 2011 at 5:26 pm

File this one under rumor for now, but word on the street is (and by street, I mean the highly accurate interwebs) that the feature film version of Danger Girl now has three very good-looking women attached to star. Latino Review reports (via tracking boards) that Kate Beckinsale, Milla Jovovich and Sofia Vergara are attached to the adaptation of the Wildstorm comic book series Danger Girl from J. Scott Campbell. Benderspink is apparently shopping the rights to the project, which is described as Kill Bill meets Raiders of the Lost Ark, with the team element of Mission: Impossible thrown in for good measure. Todd Lincoln (The Apparition) is supposedly attached to direct.

The casting seems a bit too “teenage boy’s fantasy” to be true, so I’m reluctant to report this as solid fact at the moment. Then again, it could also turn out to be spot-on (egg, meet face), but for now just take this with a grain of salt. When the Danger Girl film was first announced, producer Adrian Askarieh said that the film would be the anti-Charlie’s Angels and more in the vein of Batman Begins. Hit the jump to read the supposed logline as well as a brief synopsis of the comic.

Milla Jovovich and Director Paul W.S. Anderson Return for RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION; Leon Kennedy to Finally Show Up

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 10th, 2011 at 8:51 am

We’re getting a fifth Resident Evil movie.  I don’t like wrapping my mind around that sentence but writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson and star Milla Jovovich couldn’t care less what I like.  Bloody-Disgusting reports that the two have signed on for Resident Evil: Retribution.  Of course, there are still characters from the video games that haven’t been put into the movies so three cheers for fan-service.  Sienna Guillory tweeted in March that she would reprising her role as Jill Valentine, but BD reports that the part is being recast.  The production is also casting for Barry Burton (who first appeared in Resident Evil 3 and most recently in DLC for Resident Evil 5) and fan-favorite Leon Kennedy.  The character was reported dead in Resident Evil: Apocalypse but Anderson looks like he’ll be making good on his promise that he’ll bring Leon into the mix for the fifth movie.  No word if Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) or Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) will return.

Filming will likely begin in October and will take Alice from Toronto to Tokyo.  Resident Evil: Retribution is slated to open in 3D on September 14, 2012.

New Trailer for THE THREE MUSKETEERS

by Phil Brown    Posted: June 28th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

Transformers 3: Blowin’ Up Chicago arrives on screens tomorrow so the taste for trashy blockbusters is in the air. The good news is that there are more ridiculous action movies on the way after Michael Bay’s latest ode to slow motion explosions. Today a fresh new trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson’s glossy The Three Musketeers update has arrived online in all its overblown glory. It’s not often that you get to see a trailer that proudly claims to be based on “the classic novel from Alexandre Dumas” only to seconds later show flying ships suspended by hot air balloons that I don’t recall being in the book. Fan of the series or not, this is one of those trailers that you kind of have to see in a “you’re not going to believe this shit” kind of way.

Hit jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Mads Mikkelson, Gabriella Wilde, Juno Temple, Orlando Bloom, and Christoph Waltz.  The Three Musketeers opens October 14th.
