See How the Minions Got to New York in New MINIONS Clip

by     Posted 4 days ago

While there will surely be plenty of box office surprises next year, I think we can all agree that Minions is going to make bank.  Both Despicable Me films did well in theaters, but it’s the adorable minions that have become Universal’s own “Mickey Mouse” if you will, adorning everything from t-shirts to coffee mugs.  The characters get their own spinoff feature next year in a movie that covers the ancient origin of the creatures and revolves around their arrival in 1968 New York, where they set out to find the most despicable master.  A new Minions clip has been released today that focuses on the titular characters’ first arrival in NYC, and it also reveals how they landed upon their signature clothing.  While I wasn’t crazy about either Despicable Me film, I’m intrigued about an animated picture with main characters that speak gibberish.  It’s also just impossible to resist their adorableness.

First MINIONS Trailer and Images Highlight the DESPICABLE ME Creatures’ Origin Story

minions trailer

Universal has released the first Minions trailer and images.  The 3-minute trailer covers a lot of ground, from the Minions apparent origin rising out of the sea to serve a T. rex, to the arrival of three Minions in 1968 New York to find the most despicable master: “The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain.”  Like many, I am a sucker for the little yellow creatures—I got a kick out of the short clip that dives into the Minion mythology.

While we mostly cover CinemaCon for the footage from the movie studios, there is plenty more going on at the convention than just preview footage.  Near the main theater where the studios present their upcoming movies to theater owners, tons of other industry folks are showing off their latest offerings for theater concession stands.  While walking around that area of the convention, I found what’s sure to be popular with kids in the very near future: custom 3D glasses for Transformers: Age of ExtinctionTeenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesMinions and Spongebob Squarepants 2.

As you can see in the pictures after the jump, each pair of glasses is definitely influenced by the movie and I’m sure kids are going to love them.  And maybe even a few adults, too.  Let me know what you think about the glasses in the comments and which ones you’d buy.  For more CinemaCon coverage, click here to check out minifigs for TMNT and Guardians of the Galaxy.

With CinemaCon in full swing in Las Vegas, over the past 24 hours I’ve managed to see the first footage from a lot of upcoming movies from Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.  Yesterday, Paramount unveiled the first teaser trailers for Hercules and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and a lot of footage from Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.  Today, Universal showed attendees footage from Luc Besson’s Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken (which looks like it’s going to be an awards contender), Fifty Shades of Grey, Fast & Furious 7, Minions, Dumb and Dumber To, a CGI-only trailer with voice over for Jurassic World, and a lot more.  Like previous years, Universal’s presentation really impressed me with the wide variety of great looking movies.  Hit the jump for more.

Universal Moves DESPICABLE ME Spinoff MINIONS to July 10, 2015

by     Posted 1 year, 92 days ago

Despicable Me 2 might be the sleeper hit of the year.  The first movie made $543 million worldwide, which is nothing to scoff at, but Despicable Me 2 has far out-grossed it with $840 million worldwide, and it’s the second-highest grossing movie of 2013 thus far.  Man of Steel is a distant third with $662 million worldwide.  And as to why Despicable Me 2 is such a success, I would throw a lot of credit to the minions.  They are by far the most memorable part of that movie, and their spin-off Minions could be huge.  In fact, Universal has discovered they could have a heavy hitter in summer 2015, and that summer is already packed.

Minions will now move back from its December 19, 2014 release to July 10, 2015.  It’s surrounded by the Terminator reboot (July 1st), Independence Day 2 (July 3rd), Superman vs. Batman (July 17th), The Smurfs 3 (July 25th), and Ant-Man and Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars on July 31st.  If Minions out-grosses all of these movies, I wouldn’t be surprised.  Considering that The Smurfs 2 grossed less than half of the first film’s domestic take, Minions is poised to be the biggest kid-friendly franchise of that month.  Don’t underestimate the power of adorable gibberish.

Sandra Bullock to Voice Villain in DESPICABLE ME Spinoff, MINIONS

by     Posted 1 year, 313 days ago

Last year, we reported that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment were developing a Despicable Me spinoff for the lovable minions.  The spinoff, appropriately titled “Minions“, now has a voice for its lead villain.  According to Deadline, Sandra Bullock will provide the voice of “Scarlet Overkill, a stylish bad-ass super-villain who is (what else?), bent on world domination.”  The story shows the minions have been around forever, and unintentionally thwarted and destroyed their masters’ plans through adorable incompetence.  Set in the 1960s, Minions has three of the creatures going to a villain convention to find a new master, and compete to get the job from Overkill, who aspires to be the world’s first female supervillain.  It sounds like a fun role for Bullock, and I’m eager to see what she does with it.

Minions is due out in 3D on December 19, 2014.  The minions will next be seen in  Despicable Me 2, which arrives in 3D on July 3rd.  Bullock will next be seen in Paul Feig‘s R-rated action-comedy The Heat, which opens June 28th.

Universal Schedules DESPICABLE ME Spinoff About the Minions for December 19, 2014

by     Posted 2 years, 121 days ago

We learned last month that, in addition to a direct sequel to Despicable Me, Illumination Entertainment is planning a spinoff centered on the minions.  The movie will look to corner the holiday toy market, as Deadline hears that Universal (Illumination’s distribution partner) has scheduled the untitled minions spinoff for December 19, 2014.  Not much is known about the movie, other than its focus on the unintelligible-yet-adorable yellow creatures and their interactions with humans, and it will be 3D.  Despicable Me directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud are returning to helm both Despicable Me 2 (scheduled for July 3, 2013) and the spinoff.  Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy are producing.  Hit the jump to watch the minion-centric teaser for Despicable Me 2.

Illumination and Universal Announce DESPICABLE ME Spinoff Featuring The Minions; Set for Release in 2014

by     Posted 2 years, 150 days ago

Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures spawned not one, but hopefully two new franchises with the release of 2010’s animated feature Despicable Me.  A direct sequel, Despicable Me 2, is already set for release in July 2013, but Deadline now reports that the studios have quietly been working on a spinoff featuring those adorable/pesky little Minions.  The spinoff feature is currently without a title, but Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me) will direct with Kyle Balda (The Lorax) acting as co-director.  Brian Lynch (Hop, Puss in Boots) has already written the screenplay.  Hit the jump for more.
