Spurred by the smashing success of The Lion King‘s 3D re-release, Disney has announced that they’ll be giving the big-screen 3D treatment to Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, and Monsters, Inc. The 3D post-conversion doesn’t bother me so much because as we saw with The Lion King, it wasn’t so much about throwing animation in your face as much as it was about seeing a 2D animated classic given an HD upgrade. I don’t think there will be as much benefit from post-converting Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. but it will still be nice to see them in theaters again. More than anything, I’m just happy I’ll finally get to see the 3D Beauty and the Beast I was promised back at Comic-Con 2009.
Hit the jump for the full press release and to find out when each film will be returning to theaters.

“Well…shit.” That’s the only reaction I can muster to the announcement that Mondo will be whipping up posters for Pixar’s films. I can only say “Well…shit,” because I know how fast these posters are going to sell out (unless they do one for Cars 2; then it should be easier than usual to get one). I’ll just sit at my computer crying angry tears because I couldn’t get the poster for WALL-E or Finding Nemo or Up. Damn you, Mondo. Can’t you do posters for movies I don’t care about? Like a director’s series for Shawn Levy? C’mon, a Cheaper by the Dozen poster? That would be…a thing. Oh, and this Pixar news comes on the heels of Mondo’s announcement that they’re also doing a series for Jurassic Park.
Anyway, the first poster in the Pixar series will be a Monsters, Inc. screenprint by Mondo fave Tom Whalen. It, unsurprisingly, looks terrific. The print measures 18″x24″, costs $45, and is limited to an edition of 365. The poster goes on sale tomorrow, September 2nd at a random time. Be sure you’re following @MondoNews for the official announcement. Hit the jump to check out the full poster and then try not to curse too loudly.

At this weekend’s D23 (essentially Disney’s Comic-Con), I got to speak with director Dan Scanlon about Pixar’s Monsters University. For those that don’t know, Monsters U is a prequel to Monsters Inc. and it’s the story of how Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) meet. As you can probably tell by the title, it was at college when they were 18.
During the interview, Scanlon talked about the challenge of making a prequel to such a successful film, how Pixar will rip apart their storyboards until they get it right, the voice cast, what’s the big challenge the animators have to overcome on Monsters U, what did they show the fans at D23, has he started thinking about any Easter Eggs for the film, and more. Hit the jump to watch.

I have never actually written a fan letter — I instead live vicariously through the correspondence of filmmakers I admire and their anonymous enthusiasts. In October 2008, Pete Docter was best known as the director of Pixar’s 2001 effort Monsters Inc. and was hard at work on the soon-to-be Oscar-winner Up, but made time to scrawl a handwritten note in response to a fan.
Letters from animators are always the best, because they include little cartoons in the margins. Docter’s note is no exception, in which he doodles himself alongside Monsters Inc. characters Mike, Sully, and Boo. Check out the letter, including scans of the original, after the jump.

Still holding out for some great holiday deals? Amazon has just thrown up some amazing deals which benefit no one as far as gift giving goes since it’s too late to order your gift and get it here in time for Christmas. Still, if you want to get something nice for yourself, these are some pretty sweet bargains.
First up, they have Deadwood: The Complete Series on DVD for $74.99, which is 58% off the list price of $179.97. Then they have the Blu-ray editions of Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection
for $59.99 (list price: $139.99), the 4-Disc Combo Editions of Up and Monsters, Inc.
together for $29.98 (normally $39.98 together), and the Gone with the Wind: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition for $39.99 (list price: $84.99).
Have a Happy Saturnalia and remember to put your tree back outdoors and take your lights back inside.

I opined when it came to Up that it’s hard to judge the Pixar canon because there are so few missteps, but when it comes to favorites, everyone’s got to have one. You have to at some point think of which one you love the most. It’s not like they’re your children. Though a case can be made for almost every single one of their films, the one that gets me the hardest, and the one that always works me over like a sap is Monsters Inc. My review of it after the jump.

We want to bring you more news every day, but unfortunately our robot army of writers who never need to sleep, to eat, or to love, is still under development (currently all they do is sleep, eat, and love). In the meantime, we’re going to be making “A Fistful of News” a regular feature you’ll see every other day where we bring you some additional news stories we found but didn’t have time to write. Until the Robot Army is ready to proceed (which is unlikely as we cut corners and ordered them from Belize, a country not known for quality robotics).
After the jump you’ll find ten quick news items including what’s next for Up director Peter Docter even though it’s not Monsters, Inc. 2, Guillermo del Toro’s monster cameo in The Hobbit, and Jeff Bridges’ behind-the-scenes photography on the set of Iron Man.

As I said last week, with the holiday’s approaching and everyone trying to save money, we’re keeping our eyes open for “geek gifts”. And thanks to Amazon, if you haven’t already pre-ordered Up on Blu-ray, they have a great deal that ends tomorrow. If you buy Up for $19.99, you can get a second Disney Blu-ray for an additional $10 dollars. Since the retail price for the four disc Blu-ray of Up is over $40 dollars, this is a great deal as you get two Blu-ray movies for $30 dollars with free shipping and no sales tax (depending where you live). While the list of choices is limited, they do have the Blu-ray’s of Bolt, Snow White, and Cars. Click here to check it out.
However, the best part of the deal for the Pixar fanatics out there is getting Up and Monsters, Inc. (both directed by Pete Docter) together for $32.98. That’s basically getting the 4-Disc Blu-ray of Up AND the 4-Disc Blu-ray of Monsters, Inc. for $16.49 each. You’re not going to beat that deal. Either way, this is one of the must-own movies of the year so head over to buy Up with whichever deal you prefer. Remember, Up will be available to own starting tomorrow so pre-order today because these deals ain’t gonna last.

One of the things I love about Comic-Con is getting to do extended interviews with filmmakers I admire. And that’s what happened when I got to speak with director Lee Unkrich about his next Pixar movie, “Toy Story 3″. Since the movie is far from finished, Lee was quite guarded when it came to talking about plot points. But that didn’t stop me from asking about everything else I could think of like what cool collectible stuff might come out with “Toy Story 3″, and what’s the status of his previous films like “Monsters Inc.” and “Toy Story 2″ on Blu-ray.
If you’re a fan of Pixar or just of the “Toy Story” franchise, it’s a great conversation and one I’m sure you’ll enjoy. Also, after the jump I listed what other subjects we talked about.
Opening this Friday is the 10th film from Pixar and it’s called “Up”. And just like all the other films from this mighty studio, it’s a classic. But would you expect anything less from Pixar?
However, even though all Pixar films have great moments, the opening ten minutes of “Up” left me speechless. It’s without a doubt my favorite stretch of story from any of their movies and it will absolutely touch your heart. And for some of you, it will make you cry. I’ve seen the opening twice and I can’t find a single shot or frame I’d have done differently. It’s perfect.
And please don’t think the rest of the film is any less spectacular, because “Up” is a wonderful film that everyone will enjoy. I can’t recommend it enough.
So to help promote “Up”, I recently got to speak with director Pete Docter and the transcript is below. We talked about how they created the amazing opening of the film, what are his thoughts and Pixar’s thoughts on IMAX, what’s up with the “Monsters Inc.” Blu-ray, what will be on the Blu-ray of “Up”, and we talked about the amazing work of composer Michael Giacchino. I even tried to find out a little on “Toy Story 3″ and the character of Lotso…but he wouldn’t spill anything.
As always, you can either read the transcript or listen to the audio by clicking here. And here’s a link to six clips from “Up”. Again, “Up” arrives in theaters this Friday.
