Just before director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy nine-part web series premiered, I got to sit down with him to talk about how the project came together.  At the time, I hadn’t seen any of the episodes, so my questions were more general than specific.  However, we still discussed the level of violence in the shorts, what rules and regulations did he have to deal with, what Easter Eggs should fans look out for, do the episodes all tie together (they do), and if he’s able to make a Mortal Kombat feature film…what would the rating be.  Hit the jump to watch.

MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY Episode 4 – Kitana & Mileena (Part 1)

The fourth episode of director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series has hit the net and it focuses on Kitana (Sam Tjhia) and Mileena (Jolene Tran).   The episode also features our first look at Baraka.

While the last two weeks were censored when they first hit the net (which makes zero sense as this is based on a game that is famous for its blood and fatalities), the fourth episode has been released uncensored.  Also, unlike the last few episodes that were all live-action, episode four features animation mixed with live-action.  It’s also part one of two.  Hit the jump to check it out.  You can click here for all our previous Mortal Kombat: Legacy coverage which features interviews with the cast and all the previous episodes.

MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY Episode 3

The third episode of Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy has been released and it focuses on Johnny Cage.  If you’re an actor that used to be popular and is now struggling to get a job, you’ll appreciate this episode.  Especially the ending.  But for everyone else, it’s just a big set up.  Hit the jump to watch.

When Ed Boon was slaving away programming the first Mortal Kombat, I’m sure he was just hoping someone might play the game.  Now, almost twenty years later, Mortal Kombat has become one of the biggest video game franchises of all time and with a new game and a nine-part web series (Mortal Kombat: Legacy), the franchise shows no signs of slowing down.

Last week I got to sit down with Boon to talk about all things Mortal Kombat.  We covered making the new game, the fatalities and violence in the series, his thoughts on director Kevin Tancharoen’s short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and the new web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, and does he think we’ll ever get a cool Mortal Kombat movie.  Hit the jump to watch.

MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY Episode Two

The second episode of director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy has been released and if you were worried the web series would be PG and not show any blood, this episode will make you happy.  Also, this is the first one to use a “fatality.”  While I wasn’t sure how Tancharoen would portray a fatality in a real world setting, I think he figured out a great way to do it.  After all, it would be very weird to all of a sudden hear an announcer scream “finish him!”

While each of the nine episodes will focus on the different characters in the Mortal Kombat universe, this one continues where the first one left off and it’s got Michael Jai White as Major Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, Jeri Ryan as Lt. Sonya Blade and Darren Shahlavi as Kano.  Hit the jump to watch.

With Warner Premiere’s nine part Mortal Kombat live–action digital series premiering today (a new episode will launch every week), the studio held a press junket yesterday in Beverly Hills and I got to speak with Jeri Ryan, Michael Jai White, director Kevin Tancharoen and game creator Ed Boom.

As most of you know, Tancharoen and the same cast filmed Mortal Kombat: Rebirth last year and the success of the short led Warner Premiere to offer Tancharoen the job helming the new series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. While the short film was a tease at what Tancharoen wanted to do with a feature, the web series is being released in conjunction with the new Mortal Kombat video game and it’s goal is to offer gamers the history of the warriors they know and love.  Obviously if the new series is a success, I’m sure we’ll get more installments.  But I’m still hoping that Tancharoen will get the keys to a hard R feature…

During my interview with White we talked about how the project came together and the reaction to the short film, how much freedom they had making the web series, the action scenes, what was it like to direct Never Back Down 2, what’s up with Black Dynamite and a sequel, and, of course, I asked what’s his karaoke song.  Hit the jump to watch.

The First Episode of MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY Is Online

The first episode of director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy has been released.   While each of the nine episode web series will focus on different characters in the Mortal Kombat universe, the first one features Michael Jai White as Major Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs and Jeri Ryan as Lt. Sonya Blade.

While I was nervous that Warner Premiere might neuter what Tancharoen did in his short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and we’d see a PG version of Mortal Kombat, I’m happy to report the first episode has a few scenes of extreme violence.  Of course the big question is…will any episode feature a “fatality”?  Hit the jump to watch the first episode and if you missed my video interview with Ryan for the series, watch it here.

Popular Video Game Characters Audition Their Fatalities for MORTAL KOMBAT Series

Earlier today, Steve interviewed Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen.  While we’ll have the full interview for you soon, Tancharoen shared an amusing Mortal Kombat parody video that wonders what would happen if popular video game characters crossed over into the MK frachise.  Fans of the series already know that Kratos from God of War will be in the upcoming game, but what if Mario, Pacman, or Link got to throw down some fatalities?

First Clip From MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY

If I didn’t tell you the first clip from the upcoming web-series Mortal Kombat: Legacy (based off last year’s popular short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth) was from Mortal Kombat: Legacy, you would likely never figure it out.  There’s no special moves, no gore, or any other trademark the Mortal Kombat video games are known for.  It looks like a scene from the world’s most generic action movie so I assumed at some point a person would break the fourth wall and ask me to please silence my cell phone.

Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan Cast in MORTAL KOMBAT Web-Series

In round one, we brought you the announcement that Warner Premiere would be developing a live-action Mortal Kombat web-series based off of director Kevin Tancharoen’s popular short, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. In round two, we’re bringing you news that the series will feature both Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) and Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite) reprising their roles as Lt. Sonya Blade and Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs, respectively. Joining them will be Darren Shalahvi (300), playing the protagonists’ common enemy, Kano.

Tancharoen is returning to direct the series and promises to keep the gritty and brutal storytelling that made the original short so popular. Live-Action MORTAL KOMBAT Web Series in Development

Earlier today, Warner Premiere announced the development of its live-action Mortal Kombat digital series.  Directed by Mortal Kombat: Rebirth creator Kevin Tancharoen (who also directed the 2008 dance film Fame), the web series will begin shooting in Vancouver next month and will be available through online retailers this spring.  Per the press release from Warner, the series will “take gamers deep into the history of warriors they know and love.”  As for those warriors, the release cites characters such as Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang as key members of the series (no love for Sonya Blade?).

New Trailers for BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, UNCHARTED 3, MASS EFFECT 3, Guillermo Del Toro’s INSANE, and More

Last night was the Video Game Awards and with the ceremony came the debut of trailers for some of the hottest upcoming video games.  Among the new trailers, I was most excited to see a new sneak peek at Batman: Arkham City, the sequel to the incredible Batman: Arkham Asylum.  The trailer didn’t really show any new gameplay, but it did introduce us to one of the game’s main villains, Dr. Hugo Strange (who might also be a villain in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises).  There were also cool trailers for Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Resistance 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Portal 2, Prototype 2, SSX: Deadly Decents, Forza Motorsport 4, Mortal Kombat, and Thor: God of Thunder.  There was also a teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming horror game, Insane, which unfortunately isn’t due out until 2013.

E3 2010 Day 3: MORTAL KOMBAT, GRAN TURISMO 5, SCOTT PILGRIM, RAGE and more

On day three of E3, it was time to make a killing. On day one I’d sampled the PlayStation Move, Microsoft Kinect and more while day two consisted mostly of waiting hours to play The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Nintendo 3DS. For the final few hours of the Electronics Entertainment Expo it was time to check out the few things that had eluded me on the days before. And that mostly consisted of violence. I checked out the new Mortal Kombat, Gran Turismo 5 in 3D and the top secret Bethesda Studios booth that held Fallout: New Vegas and Rage, one of the most buzzed about titles of the whole Expo.

TRON EVOLUTION, KILLZONE 3, GRAN TURISMO 5 and other Video Games Will Be Released in 3D Exclusively on the PlayStation 3

The digital gaming revolution has begun as 3D has sunk its fangs into console game.  With 3D television hitting the market, 3D video games are on the way.  At the Sony E3 2010 Keynote Address, it was announced that Tron Evolution, Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5, and other video games will be in 3D exclusively on the PlayStation 3.  Tron Evolution is still set to come out on PC and Xbox 360, but if you want to play it in 3D, you’ll need a PS3, a 3DTV, and the special 3D glasses that come with the TV.  They’re not the normal glasses you’d get in a movie theater, so I don’t know if those kind of 3D glasses will even work.

I recently went to my local Sony Store and while I was there they had a 3DTV on display.  There weren’t any games to play, but they showed footage from Little Big Planet and Wipeout in 3D.  It looked incredible, especially Wipeout.  Obviously, Tron Evolution is a game that sounds perfect for 3D.  The game is set for release at the end of the year, around the same time that Tron Legacy (also in 3D) hits theaters.  Check out the banners and the teaser trailer for Tron Evolution after the jump along with a list of other PlayStation 3 games that will be in 3D.
