Given the near universal praise it has received, I doubt that one more voice in its corner will persuade you to check out Captain America: The Winter Soldier this weekend if you weren’t already planning on it (especially when that “one voice” belongs to yours truly). Still yet, that fact won’t prevent me from gushing about it in these next few sentences. The Winter Soldier is fantastic. The action, humor, performances, and storytelling are all on point and work seamlessly together to create what is instantly one of my favorite Marvel movies and, more impressively, a really good film in general. It joins The Avengers on the short list of Marvel movies that I can see myself revisiting outside of canon just to enjoy again as a singular experience. While I believe a healthy dose of skepticism should be retained until you see it for yourself, I feel comfortable in saying that you can believe the hype surrounding The Winter Soldier.

In addition to me continuing to high-five the new Cap film, this week’s Top 5 also features the first trailer for director Luc Besson‘s Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson, our 22 Jump Street set visit coverage, the first teaser trailer for The Expendables 3, and a look at our most anticipated films from April to June. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

The first quarter of 2014 had a good handful of movies that lived up to our expectations including The LEGO Movie, The Raid 2, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and more.  Now we’re at Q2, so it’s time for the blockbusters.  Summer has arrived even earlier than usual with Captain America: The Winter Soldier leading off April, and there are plenty of other sequels headed our way.  There are three sequels on all three of our lists, and while it’s easy to be excited when you have a good idea of what came before, there are also some fresh movies (or at least non-sequels) in the bunch.

Once again, Adam, Dave, and Matt have each compiled a Top 5 list of most-anticipated movies for the next three months.  Hit the jump to find out what they can’t wait to see and why.

The summer movie season has come to a close, and it’s now time to turn our focus towards what this fall has in store for us.  Unsurprisingly, there are a number of very promising character-centric pics headed our way, and on paper these next few months look to be an embarrassment of riches.  We saw more than a few disappointments this summer (especially with regards to the sci-fi genre), so hopefully the end of the year will have a higher success rate when it comes to delivering the goods.  Regardless, it’s sure to be a nice change of pace from the effects-driven onslaught of the summer.

In the latest installment of our Most Anticipated series, Matt, Adam, and Dave run down what films they’re most looking forward to between October and December.  Hit the jump to read on.

With a production budget in the neighborhood of $150 million and a worldwide pull of just under $50 million entering its second weekend, it’s probably fair to say that White House Down will ultimately be seen by the powers that be as a bust. Blame its proximity to the similarly themed Olympus Has Fallen (which, on the whole, received similar critical reaction but comparatively more box office success) if you will, but having watched and enjoyed the heck out of the film last night I believe at least some of the blame lies at the feet of Sony’s marketing. Whereas Fallen was packaged, and ultimately delivered, as a dead serious action/thriller, I don’t think White House Down marketing did enough to prep its potential audience members for the over-the-top, often times ridiculous, self-aware genre piece they would encounter. The best examples I can give to support this theory are the multiple scenes that left me laughing out loud while the majority of my fellow moviegoers sat quietly, unsure whether the movie was actually asking them to laugh with it or was just that silly and contrived. It’s possible that I’m going Roland Emmerich and co. too much credit, but I went with the former every single time and ended up having a great time with the film as a result.

All White House drama aside, this week’s Top 5 includes a slew of interviews from The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp and more, a list of 15 movies from the first half of 2013 that you may have missed but definitely deserve a look, Christian Bale insisting that he is not involved with the Justice League movie in any way, The Way, Way Back interviews with Steve Carell and more, and a look at our most anticipated movies from July to September.

The spring is usually a dumping ground for studios, and while there were big misfires in spring 2013 like A Good Day to Die Hard and Jack the Giant Slayer, there were also some nice gems like Warm Bodies, Stoker, and the great The Place Beyond the Pines.  Now we move towards the heavy hitters of summer, and it’s tough to choose just five among the many choices headed our way.  Summer 2012 was a slog, but hope begins anew with summer 2013.

TOP 5: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, JACK REACHER, Most Anticipated July to September Movies, SAVAGES, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

As much as I enjoy film, my first entertainment love will always be music. As such, this weekend finds me in Chicago in anticipation of what could be my final Warped Tour appearance. That’s right, I’m a 26 year-old man (I use the term “man” lightly, of course) who still finds immense joy in the pop-punk genre. Nevertheless, it’s becoming harder and harder for my oldness to blend in with a predominantly sub-18 crowd without looking like a total creep and, therefore, today may very well be my last Warped experience. On the bright side, I still have XBox Live to remind me that I’ve never completely grown up.

Maturity issues aside, on tap in this week’s version of the Top 5 is a slew of interviews for The Amazing Spider-Man, the first trailer and new images for Tom Cruise‘s Jack Reacher, our most anticipated movies from July to September, Savages interviews with Oliver Stone, Blake Lively, etc., and more The Dark Knight Rises coverage than most humans are capable of comprehending. Links and brief recaps for each reside after the break.

We’re halfway into summer 2012 and, with the exception of The Avengers, it’s been a bit of a disappointing blur.  The third-quarter of 2012 is now upon us and we hope that the second half of the summer season will turn around (possibly with the help of a caped crusader) and then lead us into a fall packed with the smaller dramas that signal the beginning of the awards race.

Collider’s 15 Most Anticipated Blockbusters of 2012

by     Posted 2 years, 116 days ago

As 2011 comes to a close, it’s time to look forward to the movies set to open in 2012. While many are busy compiling their Top 10 lists from 2011, we thought it’d be a good time to run down the list of our 15 most anticipated blockbusters of the coming year. Will The Avengers deliver as the culmination of four years worth of Marvel movies? Just how much of a prequel to Alien is Prometheus? Will The Dark Knight Rises be the greatest movie ever made in the history of movies and awesomeness? There are a lot of unknowns, and we’ve learned that sometimes the best behind-the-scenes talent can still make a stinker (Cowboys & Aliens), but we’re hoping for more than a few pleasant surprises (a la X-Men: First Class) to appease us in 2012. Hit the jump to check out our list.
