Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is about a charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who creates his own religion and the drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) he trains to be his right-hand man. Since the inception of the project, it has been implied and/or assumed that the story was partly influenced by the life of L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. Philip Seymour Hoffman, however, is quoted in the new issue of EW opposing the idea that The Master is only about Scientology:
“It’s not the L. Ron Hubbard story… [Scientology] was one of the bigger movements at the time, but there were a lot of movements at that time. There’s nothing about how I’m behaving or talking that echoes [Hubbard]. I thought of a lot of other bigger-than-life personalities, charismatic people like Orson Welles.”

Director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) has just wrapped principal photography on his next feature, All Is Lost. To celebrate, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have released the first image of Robert Redford, who stars in “a solo performance of one man lost at sea and his battle against the elements to stay alive.” Actually, I’ll have to take their word for it. Redford’s beautiful face is obscured in a severe battle with those elements.
Redford is the only credited actor, which automatically qualifies All Is Lost as one to watch—at the very least as an intriguing formal exercise anchored by one of the greats. Hit the jump for the full image and a press release with all the details on the production.

A promotional onslaught is in effect for director Trent Cooper’s comedy Father of Invention as a new trailer, poster, and a slew of new images from the film have gone online. Starring Kevin Spacey, Heather Graham, Craig Robinson, Virginia Madsen, Johnny Knoxville, John Stamos, and Camilla Belle, the film centers on a former infomercial guru (Spacey) who finds himself in prison after a design flaw in one of his inventions de-fingers many of his customers. From there, Father of Invention looks to document Spacey’s attempted return to “As Seen on TV” glory.
The pic looks a little formulaic in its “Guy A is a bad person who must first learn how to change himself before he can really make any sort of difference” approach. Nevertheless, the cast is great and when compared to Cooper’s last directorial effort, Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, I’m sure Father of Invention is awards-season material. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, images, and an official synopsis for the film. Father of Invention opens on October 14th.
