The social satire Butter is set in the cutthroat world of professional butter carving. Iowa’s long-reigning champion butter carver Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell) has just retired, which doesn’t sit well with his obsessively ambitious wife Laura (Jennifer Garner), who decides to enter the competition herself, vowing to do whatever it takes to win. From director Jim Field Smith and screenwriter Jason Micallef, the film also stars Olivia Wilde, Alicia Silverstone, Rob Corddry, Ashley Greene, Kristen Schaal, Phyllis Smith, Yara Shahidi and Hugh Jackman.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Ty Burrell talked about his first reaction to the script, what made him decide to sign on, and how much fun it was to work with Jennifer Garner. He also talked about what the recent Emmy win for Modern Family means to him, how the process of making the show has changed over the years, and voicing the title character for the animated feature Mr. Peabody & Sherman, about a young boy and his dog, that happens to have a genius-level IQ, who spring into action when their time-travel machine is stolen and history begins to be changed. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: When someone comes to you and says, “We want you to read this script that’s a social satire set in the world of professional butter carving,” what was your first reaction?

TY BURRELL: Well, I guess, at first, I have to admit that I didn’t know that that existed. I didn’t know ...

We haven't heard much about Gus Van Sant's Promised Land since it went into production this past April. Matt Damon was originally set to make his directorial debut on the flick, before his busy schedule prompted the actor to hand the reigns over to his Good Will Hunting director. Damon co-wrote the screenplay with John Krasinski, and the plot is described as "Capra-esque." The story focuses on a duo of corporate salesmen (Damon and Frances McDormand) who try to prey on an economic town in decline only to have their mission complicated by the citizens they encounter. According to Deadline, Focus Features will release the film in an exclusive engagement in New York and Los Angeles on December 28th in order to qualify for awards consideration. The movie, which also stars Krasinski, Rosemarie DeWitt, Hal Holbrook, Scoot McNairy, and Titus Welliver, will then expand in January.

Hit the jump for release dates for upcoming DreamWorks Animation films.

Before moving on to the DreamWorks dates, here's the official synopsis for Promised Land:
Mr. Damon plays Steve Butler, a corporate salesman who arrives in a rural town with his sales partner, Sue Thomason (Ms. McDormand). With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company’s offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher (Mr. Holbrook) with support from ...

Casting news updates at a glance:

Stephen Colbert (Monsters vs Aliens) and Allison Janney (Phineas and Ferb) have been cast in the DreamWorks animated production of Mr. Peabody and Sherman, starring Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Max Charles (The Amazing Spider-Man) voicing the title roles.
Ian McShane (Snow White and the Huntsman) will join Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) and Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids) in dance-off comedy, Cuban Fury.

Hit the jump for more.

First up from THR is the news that not only are Colbert and Janney lending their voices to Mr. Peabody and Sherman, but that the studio is so amped about the project that they've moved it up from March 14th, 2014 to November 8th, 2013. The feature is based on the classic Jay Ward cartoon that centered on Mr. Peabody (the world's smartest dog) and his pet boy, Sherman. The duo ends up wreaking havoc when using their WABAC time-machine and have to restore order. Colbert will voice Mr Peabody's nemesis, Paul Peterson, with Janney as his wife, Paula Peterson. Modern Family's Ariel Winter will star as their daughter, Penny Peterson, a lovable bully who antagonizes Sherman. Mr. Peabody and Sherman also features voice work by Ellie Kemper (The Office) and Stephen Tobolowsky (The Lorax).

Also from THR comes word that McShane will be the latest addition to Cuban Fury, the British romantic comedy helmed by debut director, James Griffiths. Based on an idea by Frost, Cuban Fury follows an ex-salsa prodigy (Frost) who re-ignites his ...

DreamWorks Animation has been working on a 3D animated iteration of the classic “dog and his pet boy” cartoon Mr. Peabody and Sherman for a few years now, but the first image from the feature film has now surfaced. The original cartoon first appeared as part of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show, and DreamWorks Animation’s version boasts the voice talent of Ty Burrell (Modern Family) as the dog and Max Charles (The Amazing Spider-Man) as the boy. The story finds Peabody’s “pet boy”using the genius dog’s time machine without permission, thus sending events in history spiraling out of control.

Hit the jump to check out the first image of DreamWorks-rendered Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The film opens in 3D on March 14th, 2014.

Here’s the synopsis for Mr. Peabody and Sherman:
Based on Jay Ward’s classic cartoon, Mr. Peabody is the world’s smartest person who happens to be a dog. When his “pet” boy Sherman uses their time traveling WABAC machine without permission, events in history spiral out of control. It’s up to this most unexpected of “father-son” teams to somehow put things back on track before the space-time continuum is irreparably destroyed.

The classic "dog and his pet boy" cartoon that appeared as part of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show will be appearing in 3D theaters as DreamWorks Animation's Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Voicing the world's smartest dog and his naive companion will be, respectively, Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Max Charles (The Amazing Spider-Man). Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) will direct from a script by Craig Wright (Six Feet Under) which follows the duo as they attempt to restore order to historical events after Sherman uses Mr. Peabody's time machine without permission. The voice of Mr. Peabody was originally supposed to go to Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), but I find Burrell to be an equally fitting personality for the inquisitive canine. Hit the jump for more on Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which is schedule to release on March 14, 2014.

Variety reported that Burrell and Charles would be voicing the title characters for DreamWorks' 3D animation, Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Bill Damashcke, the chief creative officer of DreamWorks Animation had this to say about the pair's involvement:
"The brilliantly comedic and paternal sensibilities of Ty Burrell make him ideal for the role of the beloved Mr. Peabody, and we are thrilled that he will join Max Charles as the leads of 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman.'"
Here’s some background on the characters (via Wikipedia):
Peabody is a genius who adopted Sherman for company. Sherman is a naive but fairly bright, inquisitive, earnest and energetic lad who’s always one step ...

It was announced last week that Robert Downey Jr. has agreed to voice Mr. Peabody in DreamWorks Animation's adaptation of Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Today we have a very early look at the character thanks to a piece of concept art.

Peabody and Sherman appeared in The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show in their own separate shorts "Peabody's Improbable History." In each segment, dog Peabody teaches "his boy" Sherman in the ways of history, using the WABAC time machine to witness historical events. No word yet on who will voice Sherman, but Rob Minkoff (The Forbidden Kingdom) has signed on to direct from a script by Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin (Yogi Bear). Hit the jump to see the image.

Via Cartoon Brew:

How about those DreamWorks eyebrows, eh?
Here's some background on the characters:

Peabody is a genius who adopted Sherman for company. Sherman is a naive but fairly bright, inquisitive, earnest and energetic lad who's always one step behind getting his friend's dreadful puns. In appearance, Peabody is a small white dog with floppy ears. Sherman is always in need of having his hair combed. He wears a white tee-shirt and dark shorts. Each character wears a pair of oversized horn-rimmed glasses...

Each episode of "Peabody's Improbable History" begins with the dog's greeting, "Peabody, here." The premise each week was to introduce Sherman to real history. For that purpose, Peabody has constructed the WABAC (pronounced "wayback") machine. The WABAC is a take-off on ...
