Sony Pictures Courting Colin Firth for MY FAIR LADY

Colin Firth is currently one of the most in-demand actors in town. Being the stand-out frontrunner for a Best Actor Oscar will do that to you. Now it appears that Sony Pictures is keen on nabbing Firth for their remake of the 1964 musical classic My Fair Lady. In a pitch-perfect casting move, Carey Mulligan has long been attached to take on the role of Eliza Doolittle, with Joe Wright (Atonement) set to direct the film from a screenplay by Emma Thompson (the actress also wrote Sense and Sensibility).

The report, filed by The Daily Mail, states that Sony Pictures originally brushed Firth aside in favor of casting Hugh Grant as ol’ ‘Enry ‘Iggins, with the producers insisting that Firth was their man. Thankfully, Sony relented, and now only wants to make the film with Firth. The actor is sure to be vetting a flurry of offers now that his brilliant turn in The King’s Speech is getting so much attention (but let’s be honest, the guy’s been brilliant for a long time now). I say the pairing of Firth and Mulligan for My Fair Lady is spot on. Here’s hoping it works out.

Since her Oscar nominated performance in An Education, all eyes have been on British actress Carey Mulligan. With a role in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, recently pushed back to a September 24^th release date, and the intriguing dramatic thriller Never Let Me Go, based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, everyone wants to know what she’ll be doing next.

According to the actress herself, she stated during the press day for her latest drama The Greatest (which we’ll have more on closer to the April 2^nd release date) that she has not signed on to play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, nor has she received a call to do Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, at this point, but she is looking to play really interesting characters that challenge and terrify her.  She also talked about working for director Mark Romanek.  Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Once upon a time it was Keira Knightley who was to sing about rain, Spain, and plains as Eliza Doolittle in the upcoming remake of classic musical My Fair Lady, but that destiny crumbled.  Then Carey Mulligan, a newly appointed critical darling thanks to her splendid turn in An Education, was rumored to be in talks for the role.  She dismissed such rumors, lamenting, “It would be lovely, but no.”  But Mulligan and I are not the only ones who think such casting would be lovely, as scribe Emma Thompson confided to BBC, “I think Carey is set to play it, yes.”

Keira Knightley and Director Joe Wright Confirmed For The Remake of MY FAIR LADY

From the annals of remakes we don’t really care about: Actress Keira Knightley, who has been informally attached to the remake of 1964′s classic musical “My Fair Lady” for nearly two years, is now formally attached along with her “Atonement” director Joe Wright who will helm the project. The coveted role of Eliza Doolittle, made famous in George Cukor’s film by the great Audrey Hepburn, will go to Knightley despite rumors that Scarlett Johansson was being considered for the part by the film’s producers.  Details after the jump.
