Not long after Warner Bros. was reportedly getting cold feet with the swelling budget of David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot, it looks like the studio has officially hit the pause button. The film, starring Kit Herington (Game of Thrones) and Joel Kinnaman (The Darkest Hour) in a reimagined Arthurian legend, was supposed to open March 15, 2013. Dobkin (The Wedding Crashers) reportedly informed cast and crew that it “wasn’t looking good,” although studio insiders confirm they’re trying to make the project work. Warner envisions the tone of Arthur & Lancelot to be in a similar vein to their Sherlock Holmes franchise, but will have to negotiate budget and scheduling difficulties. Herington, will return to Game of Thrones this spring while Kinnaman is expected to segue into the film shoot after wrapping on AMC’s The Killing. The project may move forward without one or both of the actors. Hit the jump for news regarding the delay of Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer 3D and Rock of Ages.

I have to say that I can’t wait to check out Steven Soderbergh‘s actioner Haywire. Everything I’ve seen from it thus far has looked great and the positivity pouring out from early reviews only supports my belief that the entire pic will deliver. Whether it be the stellar cast, the proclaimed breakout performance from Gina Carano, or Soderbergh’s top-notch action sequences, I fully expect to be talking about Haywire right here again next week in a little “Before & After” discussion. In the meantime…

…This week’s “Top 5″ brings you some new details regarding the long-gestating Star Wars live-action television series, Contraband interviews with Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, and more, the first official images from Jonathan Levine‘s (50/50) Warm Bodies, a “Cinemath” feature that analyzes the 2011 box office, and all of our coverage from the 2011 Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour. New Images from WARM BODIES Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, and Rob Corddry

Yesterday, we showed you the first official image from Jonathan Levine‘s zombie romance film Warm Bodies.  Today, two more images have been released, and once again we see star Nicholas Hoult as one of the most attractive zombies you’ll ever meet.  For those unfamiliar with the movie, it’s based on the novel by Isaac Marion, and centers on R (Hoult), a zombie who eats the brains of a young woman’s (Teresa Palmer) boyfriend and falls for the newly-single girl.  It’s an odd twist on the supernatural romance premise, but Levine, who previously directed 50/50, managed to make a funny and heartwarming movie about cancer, so I have faith he’ll be able to pull this off.  Having Rob Corddry and John Malkovich in the cast doesn’t hurt either.

Hit the jump to check out the new images.  Warm Bodies opens August 10th.

First Official Image of Nicholas Hoult as a Zombie in Jonathan Levine‘s WARM BODIES [Updated]

While Hollywood’s zombie obsession has tapered off a bit, it’s far from dead. Though some of the recent zombie output suggests profit rather than creative fascination is the motivating factor, director Jonathan Levine’s (50/50) adaptation of Isaac Marion‘s novel Warm Bodies sounds like a wholly intriguing and incredibly fun zombie pic.  The “zombie love story” stars Nicholas Hoult as “R”, a zombie who falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer) after he eats her boyfriend’s brains and absorbs his memories.  It’s a really cool premise anchored by a stellar supporting cast (Rob Corddry, John Malkovich) and an exciting young filmmaker.

The first official image of Hoult as the zombified “R” has been released, and it’s pretty great.  The look is different enough from the gruesome zombies of The Walking Dead to appear fresh, yet still maintains the vacant stare and pale skin that says “I hunger for brains.”  The stain is a nice touch as well.  Hit the jump to check out the image.  Warm Bodies opens August 10th.

[Update: Summit has released three more images, now included after the jump.]

First Trailer and Poster for Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 15th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

The first trailer for director Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer has gone online. Based on the classic tale, the fantasy pic tells the story of an ancient war that’s reignited when a young boy (Nicholas Hoult) unknowingly opens a gate between the world of the humans and the world of the giants. We don’t see much here, as it plays out very much like a teaser trailer, but I like the feel of it and it sure is nice to see Singer back doing big action set pieces. Ewan McGregor is the epitome of cool, and Hoult seems a fine choice to play the reluctant hero. Overall, I like the tone and the look of everything, but there’s not enough here to gauge whether or not Singer’s got himself a winner. I’m really looking forward to seeing those giants though.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Eleanor Thomas, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Bill Nighy. Jack the Giant Killer opens in 3D IMAX on June 15th, 2012.

First Promo Image and Synopsis for WARM BODIES Starring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 2nd, 2011 at 10:22 am

Steve is over at the American Film Market where various studios are trying to sell the international rights to their upcoming films.  One of the films being sold is Jonathan Levine‘s zombie love story Warm Bodies, and Steve snapped a photo of the promo image.  The movie stars Nicholas Hoult as “R”, a zombie who falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer) after he eats her boyfriend’s brains and absorbs his memories.  I got to visit the set last week and while I’m embargoed like crazy, I can say the movie looks like an interesting spin on the genre.  Judging by this image, it looks like Summit Entertainment is going to play up the romance aspect (the movie also has horror and comedy) and making it look like zombie Twilight.  That’s a risky bet since I don’t think those audiences are going to cross-over, but it’s still early in the game and remember: this is trying to sell international studios, not the public.

Hit the jump to check out the promo image.  The film also stars Rob Corddry, John Malkovich, Analeigh Tipton, and Dave FrancoWarm Bodies opens August 10, 2012. [Update: We've updated the article with a full, comprehensive synopsis as well as a high resolution version of the image]

A new featurette and a slew of images from X-Men: First Class have been released over the past week. Early reviews for the film have been wildly positive. Steve saw it earlier this week and thought it was great, “a home-run.” Director Matthew Vaughn has been thinking about a follow-up film, and even has an idea of how he would open the sequel. Directed by Vaughn, the film stars Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Lucas Till and Caleb Landry Jones. X-Men: First Class opens on June 3rd. Hit the jump to check out the featurette followed by the images.

With director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class set to open next week, 20th Century Fox has sent over three clips and twenty five minutes of behind the scenes footage!  For those that want to stay spoiler free, I advise you not to watch the behind the scenes footage until you’ve seen the movie as it’s loaded with could be considered spoilers.  However, if you’re curious how a movie is made, or what it was like on the set, the footage is great.

As I said a few days ago after I saw the movie, X-Men: First Class is a huge home-run.  Everything from the great script to the awesome performances by the entire cast (with special mention to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) makes this X-Men film my favorite in the franchise.   Also, the film is loaded with incredible action and a ton of Easter Eggs for the fans.  Even the sets and costumes are great.  Trust me, as soon as the movie is over, you’re going to wish the next chapter was coming out next week.   Hit the jump to check out the footage.

New Clips from X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and SUPER 8

Well, we’re off to the races people. Summer blockbuster season is officially upon us and the Hollywood hype machines are working at full force. Today clips from arguably the two biggest movies of June have found their way onto the internet. New scenes from X-Men: First Class and JJ Abrams’ excitingly/frustratingly mysterious Super 8 are now available online.  Both blockbusters have a great deal of potential and the new clips certainly don’t reveal anything that will dissuade viewers from that opinion, but don’t expect to see anything earth shattering. It’s pretty simple stuff cherry picked for marketing purposes. You will however get to see 30 more mysterious seconds from Super 8 as well as an early look at X-Men: First Class’ Hank McCoy (aka Beast) in action and far more Oliver Platt than was ever expected to be in an X-Men movie. These flicks are looking like they’ll be pretty damn good. Hopefully they’ll deliver on the hype unlike, say, a certain pirate-related sequel. Hit the jump to see the clips.  X-Men: First Class opens on June 3rd while Super 8 hits theaters on June 10th.

Yesterday, we showed you X-Men: First Class character trailers for Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Havok (Lucas Till), and Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones).  Today, Fox has released a trailer for Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence).  While the trailer shares some of the footage seen in yesterday’s Beast trailer, I really like the ending of this one where we see the beginnings of the relationship between Mystique and Magento (Michael Fassbender).

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  X-Men: First Class also stars James McAvoy, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon.  The film opens June 3rd.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Character Trailers for Banshee, Havok, and Beast

While Fox may be striking out with their posters for X-Men: First Class, the trailers continue to be fantastic.  The studio has released three new trailers for the film, each focusing on a different mutant: Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones), Havok (Lucas Till), and Beast (Nicholas Hoult).  One of my main concerns about the movie is that it will be overstuffed with mutants like X-Men: The Last Stand.  However, these brief character trailers give me hope that the film has devoted time to each of the characters to not only show their abilities, but also to illustrate their personalities.  However, in the trailers for Banshee and Havok, we get an even better sense of Xavier with James McAvoy doing an excellent job of conveying the character’s compassion.

Hit the jump to check out the trailers.  X-Men: First Class also stars Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon.  It opens June 3rd.

New Posters for ANONYMOUS and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

New posters have been released for Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous and Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class.  I’m having trouble deciding which is worse.  The poster for Anonymous makes it look like a person is exploding in a mess of ink and bird crap, but X-Men: First Class is continuing the proud tradition of having awful posters (but I seriously doubt anyone is going to top these).

Hit the jump to check out the posters and decide for yourself which one you’d least want on your wall.  Anonymous opens September 30th while X-Men: First Class is due out June 3rd.

New International Trailer for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

On the heels of a new domestic trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, Fox has also released an international version that sets a slightly different tone, and has some new footage including a first look at Oliver Platt and Ray Wise.  Again, there’s not of elaboration on the role the Hellfire Club will play, but the point of both trailers is clear: mutants prevented World War III.  Thanks, mutants!  Hit the jump to watch.

Fox has released a new trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class.  There’s a lot of good new footage and snippets of dialogue in this trailer. I’m still not sure how The Hellfire Club factors into the story, but I liked a lot of what the trailer has to show. We get a better look at the relationship between Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and there’s a much darker tone to the relationship between Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) as opposed to previous trailers which seemed to position Magneto more as a tragic figure. Fingers crossed that all these storylines and characters come together in a quality film.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  X-Men: First Class stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Rose Byrne, Oliver Platt, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Kevin Bacon.  The film opens June 3rd.

Teresa Palmer in Talks to Co-Star with Nicholas Hoult in Zombie Love Story WARM BODIES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 29th, 2011 at 7:53 am

teresa-palmer-slice-01

Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) is in talks to star alongside Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man) in Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of Isaac Marion’s upcoming novel Warm Bodies.  Per Heat Vision, the story is described as a cross between Shaun of the Dead (yay!) and Twilight (nay!) and “follows an existentially tormented zombie named R that begins an unlikely friendship with the human girlfriend (Palmer) of one of his victims. The blossoming relationship starts a chain reaction that will transform him, his fellow zombies and maybe the whole lifeless world.”  Palmer’s character is the daughter of one of the “military leaders who is tiring of a life of constantly fighting off zombie attacks.”

Palmer recently co-starred in back-to-back duds with I Am Number Four and Take Me Home Tonight, but I don’t think the short-comings of those films are her fault.  She showed she can be a bad-ass in I Am Number Four and she demonstrated charm in TMHT, so it’s really a matter of finding the right project for her talents.  Perhaps Warm Bodies will be it.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.
