First Trailer and Poster for THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT Starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt [UPDATED]

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 7th, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Universal has debuted the first trailer for The Five-Year Engagement. Directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and produced by Judd Apatow, the film follows a young couple’s extended engagement and the ups and downs they experience along the way. The trailer looks pretty great, as it’s very much what you’d expect from an Apatow production. Parks and Recreation‘s Chris Pratt had me cracking up by the first 10 seconds, and Jason Segel and Emily Blunt look to have some superb comedic chemistry. Segel and Stoller co-wrote the pic and I’m really liking the feel of this “relationship comedy” so far. The supporting cast doesn’t hurt as well, with Alison Brie, Mindy Kaling, and Jacki Weaver rounding out the cast.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster. If you missed Steve’s interview with Stoller where he talked about the test screening process of the film (which sounds very positive) click here. The Five-Year Engagement opens April 27th. [Update: We've been sent a high resolution version of the poster and two images which are now included after the jump].

What Awards Can THE MUPPETS Actually Win?

The Muppets returned to theaters this year in a big way with director James Bobin’s aptly named The Muppets. While the film could have easily become a heavy-handed and groan-worthy kids movie, Bobin and Co. delivered a sweet, funny, and ultimately touching flick that is just as effective for 7-year-olds as it is for cold, cynical cinephiles. When the Oscar hosting gig was once again up for grabs earlier this year, a campaign to have our lovely Muppets take up the duties gained some significant traction. While producers ultimately went with Billy Crystal, the whole idea got us thinking: what awards could the film actually win?  Hit the jump for our take on The Muppets’ chances in this coming awards season.

TOP 5: THE MUPPETS, HUGO, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, PROMETHEUS, Gary Oldman and Colin Firth Discuss AKIRA and OLDBOY Rumors

I did it, folks. I came, saw, and survived yet another Black Friday. This year’s destination of choice was my local Best Buy and I sat outside in moderately chilly temperatures for around six hours for one lonely purpose: to buy things for cheaper than what they were the day before. That’s right, I rocked Best Buy to the tune of two seasons of television on DVD for a combined $15. Now, I know some of you reading this may be thinking, “Wait, Jason waited outside for six hours so that he could buy two seasons of TV on DVD?”. My answer: a resounding “Yes!”. It’s the small things, people. The small things.

But enough of my Black Friday exploits. In this week’s “Top 5″ installment you’ll find interviews for this weekend’s openers The Muppets and Hugo, new images and plot details from The Dark Knight Rises, new images from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and Gary Oldman and Colin Firth addressing Akira and Oldboy remake rumors. Nicholas Stoller Talks THE MUPPETS, THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT, SEX TAPE, and More

Nicholas Stoller the muppets interview slice

With The Muppets now playing, all week I’ve been posting exclusive video interviews with the cast.  The past few days I posted my conversations with Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, Jason Segel and Walter, director James Bobin, and today I’ve got co-screenwriter Nicholas Stoller (as well as director of Get Him to the Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall).  But before getting to the interview, as I’ve said all week, I absolutely loved The Muppets.  It’s one of my favorite films of the year and it not only made me laugh, it also made me cry.  If you were nervous about the movie…don’t be.  It’s a huge home run.

During my extended video interview with Stoller, we talked about the status of how the script changed along the way, ’80s Robot, Infant Sorrow, the notes they got from Disney, his favorite jokes, and a lot more.  In addition, with Stoller currently in post production on his next film, The Five-Year Engagement (which also stars Jason Segel), we talked about his first test screening, the music (it’ll be a lot of Van Morrison), editing a movie with so much improv, and how the movie might be longer than people expect.  Finally, with Stoller also attached to Sex Tape, I asked the status of that project.  Hit the jump for more.

THE MUPPETS Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 22nd, 2011 at 3:08 pm

We all know the Muppets.  They may not be as ubiquitous and popular as they once were, but we know them and we love them because they’re delightful characters who appeal to kids and adults alike with their mixture of slapstick, strangeness, satire, and singing.  The Muppets‘ director James Bobin and co-writers Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel (the latter of whom also co-stars) never forgot what makes Jim Henson‘s creations so special and this deep respect creates a movie that will introduce Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and the whole gang to a new generation, and make the older generation fall in love with the Muppets all over again.

Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller THE MUPPETS Interview

by Christina Radish    Posted: November 17th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

In The Muppets, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, goes on vacation in Los Angeles with his brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Gary’s girlfriend, Mary (Amy Adams). While there, they discover the evil plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to demolish the famed Muppet Studios and drill for the oil discovered beneath it. In order to save their old stomping grounds, the Muppet gang must band together and stage a telethon to raise the $10 million.

As big a fan of The Muppets as I am, it is clear that co-writers Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller are as well, ensuring that their big-screen return was in the right hands. At the press day for the film, the two guys discussed the journey of bringing the Muppets to a new generation of audiences, why The Muppets’ lack of cynicism is important for kids, how much fun they had figuring out where these characters have been and what they’ve been doing since we last saw them, how good The Muppets are at improvisation, and walking away from the experience with an even greater appreciation for the puppeteers. Sony Looking at Jason Segel and Reese Witherspoon to Star in Nicholas Stoller’s SEX TAPE [UPDATED]

Sony is moving forward with the comedy Sex Tape, as they’ve got their eye on a couple of actors to take the leads. Deadline reports that the studio is keen on Jason Segel and Reese Witherspoon to star in the Kate Angelo-scripted pic. The film centers on a married couple who, on a night off from their kids, decide to make a sex tape. When they wake up in the morning to find the tape missing, they head out on an adventure to find it. Nicholas Stoller, who helmed Forgetting Sarah Marshall and co-scripted The Muppets alongside Segel, is in talks to direct. The concept sounds fun, if a little similar to the Steve Carell/Tina Fey comedy Date Night. Hopefully Sex Tape is a good deal less PG than the Shawn Levy pic. Judging by the title, I’d say it’s a safe bet that this won’t be one for the whole family.

Segel has more than proven himself a comedic talent, and Witherspoon can actually be quite good in the genre given the right material, so I actually quite like this pairing. Segel recently wrapped The Five-Year Engagement, and Witherspoon is currently filming the Jeff Nichols drama Mud. [Update: Variety reports that Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Rose Byrne, and Jennifer Garner are also in the mix with Witherspoon as possible female leads.]

Exclusive: New Standee for THE MUPPETS Starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams; Updated with New Poster

I looked through the release dates just to make sure and, yep, The Muppets tops my holiday movie wishlist.  If only Muppets were promised, that would be enough.  Instead, the movie stars Jason Segel and Amy Adams, two of the most affable actors Hollywood has to offer, and a perfectly wholesome match to the material.

So it is with pride that we present this exclusive new standee, which you should start to see in theaters next month.  Thankfully, the image Disney sent over is very high resolution, because by my count there are at least 40 Muppets crowding around Segel and Adams in the frame.  Count for yourself after the jump.  The Muppets opens on November 23.

Update: We’ve added the final poster for The Muppets after the standee.

Nicholas Stoller On Set Interview THE MUPPETS

Nicholas Stoller Interview THE MUPPETS slice

While many of you know Nicholas Stoller because he directed Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, he’s also a screenwriter.  If you look over his IMDb profile, you’ll see he wrote a few episodes of Undeclared, and contributed to the screenplays of Fun with Dick and Jane, Yes Man, Get Him to the Greek, Gulliver’s Travels, and, most recently, The Muppets.  With Stoller being a lifelong fan of The Muppets and since he’d been working on the script with Jason Segel for years, when I got to speak with him on the set earlier this year, you could hear his excitement when talking about the project.

During the interview, he talked about what it’s like to be on set and watch Kermit deliver his dialogue, how much did the original show shaped the movie, the cameos, which Muppets did he want to make sure got in the movie, the differences between writing and directing, and a lot more. Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

The first official synopses for two Universal flicks have been released: the live-action/CG-animated Ted and the comedy The Five-Year Engagement. Marking the feature directorial debut of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, Ted stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel McHale, Patrick Warburton and Jessica Stroup. The story centers on a grown man (Wahlberg) whose wish that his childhood teddy bear would come to life comes true. MacFarlane voices the very R-rated teddy bear. The film hits theaters July 13th, 2012

Directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), The Five-Year Engagement stars Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie, Chris Pratt, Rhys Ifans, Mindy Kaling, Lauren Weedman, David Paymer, Kevin Hart, Jacki Weaver and Dakota Johnson. Co-written by Segel and Stoller, the film follows a young couple’s (Segel and Blunt) extended engagement and the bumps and bruises that they undergo along the way. Judd Apatow is producing. First Trailer for THE MUPPETS plus Poster for Fake Movie GREEN WITH ENVY

by Collider Staff    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 11:37 am

The first trailer for The Muppets has gone online.  It takes a little while to get to the actual Muppets, but stick through the trailer for the first 50 seconds and you’ll get there.  This is really more of an announcement trailer, and I’m not sure what will set this Muppets movie apart, but creating a trailer that basically goes “Surprise!  Muppets!” isn’t a bad way to start.  I’m slightly confused by the set-up of a fake Jason Segel/Amy Adams romance flick called Green with Envy, but I’ll go with it for now.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer for The Muppets and the poster for Green with EnvyThe Muppets also stars Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, and a slew of celebrity cameos.  The film opens November 23rd.

The Office star/writer Mindy Kaling is the latest actor to join the Judd Apatow-produced comedy Five Year Engagement. The cast now includes Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie, Chris Pratt, Rhys Ifans, Lauren Weedman, David Paymer, Kevin Hart and Jacki Weaver. Directed by Nicholas Stoller (Get Him to the Greek), the film follows a young couple’s (Segel and Blunt) extended engagement and the bumps and bruises that they undergo along the way.

Variety reports that Kaling will play one of Ifans’ grad students. Stoller previously directed Segel in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and the two co-wrote this project together.

Lauren Weedman Joins Judd Apatow-Produced FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT

Actress Lauren Weedman (The Daily Show, Hung) has joined the cast of director/co-writer Nicholas Stoller’s Five Year Engagement. The impressive cast of the Judd Apatow-produced comedy now includes Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie, Chris Pratt and Rhys Ifans. The film follows a young couple’s (Segel and Blunt) extended engagement and the bumps and bruises that they undergo along the way.

THR reports that Weedman will portray a “hard-nosed head chef” at the restaurant where Segel’s character works. When we last reported, the film was expected to start production towards the end of April. No word on whether that’s still the case. This marks a reunion of sorts for Stoller and Segel, as the director previously helmed the Segel-penned Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Stoller’s most recent outing was Get Him to the Greek.

Alison Brie Joins Emily Blunt and Jason Segel in Nicholas Stoller’s FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 2:45 pm

alison-brie-slice-01

Community star Alison Brie has joined Emily Blunt and Jason Segel in the upcoming relationship comedy Five-Year Engagement.  The movie charts the very long engagement of a couple played by Blunt and Segel.  Segel co-wrote the script with director Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall).  Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson will produce.

According to Variety, Brie will play the sister of Blunt’s character and will put on an English accent for the role.  While Community may not have the killer ratings of other network shows, I have no doubt that it’s a launching pad for its cast members, particularly Brie and co-star Donald Glover.  Fans of Community know that Brie kills at comedy, but her work on Mad Men shows that she’s equally adept at more dramatic fare.  She’ll next be seen in theaters in Wes Craven’s Scream 4.
