Predator is one of the great action movies of the 1980’s. John McTiernan directed the hell out of it, and it is one of the great signature Arnold Schwarzenegger roles. They tried sequelizing it, and then there were the pathetic Alien vs. Predator films – Fox knew there was a franchise here, they just didn’t know how to pull it off. So they hired Robert Rodriguez to produce a new sequel that ignored all the other spin-offs, and to class it up, they ripped off James Cameron by naming it Predators. Nimrod Antal directs Adrian Brody, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Louis Ozawa Changchein, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Oleg Taktarov as a group of killers rounded up by Predators, and let loose on an Alien planet to defend themselves. In this case, the hunters become the hunted until they become hunters hunting the hunters who are hunting them. My review of Predators on Blu-ray after the jump.

In today’s action blockbuster marketplace, it’s refreshing to see a film that boils the genre down to its bare essentials and thrives as a lean, mean, disemboweling machine. Not designed to sell collectors glasses at Burger King or have an opening weekend gross that would dwarf the GDP of a third-world country, Predators is a solid B-action movie that delivers fun, thrills, and unapologetic violence for only a fraction of the cost of your run-of-the-mill special effects extravaganza.

Last week I had the opportunity to see Nimrod Antal’s Predators and participate in two press conferences after the screening. While I can’t say much about the movie, know that the highlight of my time at Collider thus far was telling Antal to his face how much I really liked this movie. We’ve already posted the press conference with director Nimrod Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez. Today we’ve got the actors press conference with Adrien Brody and Walton Goggins.
In the film, Brody and Goggins play characters that have literally been dropped out of the sky onto an unfamiliar planet where they are hunted by the film’s titular characters. Brody plays Royce, an American mercenary and Goggins plays Stans, a death row inmate just days away from his execution. While many people have doubted Brody’s ability to star in an action film, I believe Brody’s performance will pleasantly surprise all the doubters. To see what Brody and Goggins had to say about preparing for their roles, the first time they saw the original Predator, filming on location and much more, continue reading. Predators hits theaters this Friday.

With director Nimrod Antal’s Predators getting released in a week, 20th Century Fox has released the full press kit for the Robert Rodriguez produced film and included are 4 movie clips and 10 images. While I don’t get to see the film till next week, the buzz off the junket screening was very good – with our own Jake Lasker saying he loved the film. I hope he’s right. So if you’ve been looking forward to the movie, hit the jump to check out the clips and images.

Earlier today I had the opportunity to see a screening of Nimrod Antal’s Predators, followed by a press conference with Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez. While I can’t say much about the film, just know that I loved it. In our 25-minute press conference, Antal and Rodriguez spoke about:

An age-restricted, international trailer for Nimrod Antal’s Predators has hit the net. It’s gory, has an amazing one-liner from Laurence Fishburne, and is way too spoilery. There’s only a handful of actors in this movie and the trailer shows one of them getting killed. Obviously, in a movie where all the characters are prey for the Predators, folks are going to die. But you don’t need to show me which ones and how they’re going to die. Why should I even have to say that? It’s common freaking sense. Also, it’s not even an inventive kill, so what exactly are they showing off?
Basically, this trailer shows too much. If that doesn’t bother you, then hit the jump to check it out. Predators hits theaters on July 9th.

At tonight’s Spike “Guys Choice” Awards at Sony Studios, I managed to get about a minute with Adrien Brody on the red carpet. Since I recently interviewed him for his awesome movie Splice (watch it here), I decided to ask about his next movie Predators.
While all of us have to wait until July 9 to see director Nimród Antal’s take on the franchise, Brody told me he’s seen the film and calls it “fucking epic”. Hit the jump to see what else he had to say about Predators:

Three Italian websites have premiered posters for Nimrod Antal’s upcoming film Predators. The posters are English but they’re for the international market. For those who don’t know, Predators ignores the events of Predator 2 and the Alien vs. Predator movies. Instead, it’s about a group of killers transported to a planet that functions as a game reserve for the predators. The film was produced by Robert Rodriguez and stars Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Laurence Fishburne.

When I think who should be the leader in an action movie, I definitely don’t think of Adrien Brody. After all, the guy won an Academy Award for his amazing portrayal of Wladyslaw Szpilman in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, and he’s been busy making Wes Anderson and Rian Johnson movies these past few years. But that’s the reason why he’s such an amazing choice for director Nimród Antal’s Predators, as he’s a great actor that isn’t overexposed in the action genre. In Predators, Brody plays Royce, and he’s one of the killers that the Predators have brought to a hunting planet.
Anyway, last December I got to visit the set of Predators when the production was filming at Robert Rodriguez’ Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas. While on set, I was able to speak with Adrien Brody (along with a few other online journalists) and he discussed making the film, how he prepared for the role, Schwarzenegger impressions, and a lot more. Hit the jump to either read the transcript or listen to the audio:

As Eric Forman on That 70′s Show, Topher Grace never showed a dark side. He was always the good son and audiences responded to his character and the rest of the cast by tuning in for eight seasons. Since wrapping the show, Grace starred in Spider-Man 3 as Eddie Brock / Venom and we finally got to see a bit more of what he can do. Cut to present day, Grace is going to push what audiences expect from him as he’s one of the stars of director Nimrod Antal’s Predators.
Last December, 20th Century Fox invited a few online folks to the Austin, Texas set and we got to speak with Topher Grace about being in Predators and working with the rest of the talented cast. He talked to us about his character, how it compared to Spider-Man 3, and how a lot of the effects were in-camera. Hit the jump to read or listen to what he had to say:

While Alice Braga is very famous in Brazil as she’s stared in many movies in her native country, she’s started making inroads in America as she’s one of the leads in I Am Legend, Redbelt, Repo Men and Crossing Over. On top of those films, she’s the only female lead in director Nimród Antal’s Predators, as she plays Isabelle – a Brazilian SAD black ops sniper.
When I was on the set of Predators last December, I was able to participate in a roundtable interview with Braga. She talked about who she plays, training to play a sniper, what’s it like carrying around the gun, and I asked her thoughts on the two different endings to I Am Legend. It’s a great interview that you can check out after the jump:

While a lot of people think Robert Rodriguez must have directed Predators as the movie was filmed at Troublemaker Studios in Austin and he’s all over the promo spots, it’s actually Nimrod Antal (Armored, Vacancy, Kontroll) in the big chair. And after getting to speak with him on set last December and taking a look at a ton of production artwork, this is a good thing.
As I said in my set report, the thing that really impressed me was the framing of the shots and the overall look of the film. As Antal told the visiting group of online reporters, it’s because of his DP Gyula Pados and his use of the Genesis camera. Perhaps if Rodriguez was behind the camera, he would have made other choices.
Anyway, while Antal was extremely busy framing shots and trying to make a movie, he took some time to talk to us about making Predators, why he sometimes says pancakes after a great shot, what might be on the DVD/Blu-ray, how he’s using practical effects and not as much CGI, and so much more. It’s a great interview that you can either read or listen to after the jump:

Last December, when director Nimród Antal’s Predators was filming at Robert Rodriguez’ Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas, I got to visit the set along with a few other online journalists. As I said in my set report, I was very impressed with what they showed us and think fans of the franchise are finally going to get another great Predator movie.
When we were on set, we got to speak with most of the cast and after the jump is the interview we did with Walton Goggins. During the interview he talks about his character Stans and why he’s obsessed with the number 38 (it’s how many people he’s killed), what it’s like to walk around in real life with a ton of fake tattoos, his thoughts on how The Shield ended, how he got involved in Justified, and a lot more. You can either read or listen to what he had to say after the jump:

If you’re a fan of makeup/creature/special effects in movies, you really should know who Gregory Nicotero is. That’s because since 1985 when he worked on George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead, Nicotero has worked on over 100 movies and the company he formed with Robert Kurtzman and Howard Berger (KNB Efx Group) has worked on over 400 film and TV projects. While I’d love to list the highlights, his resume is so insane you need to click over to IMDb and check it out.
So why am I talking about Greg Nicotero? Because when I visited the set of director Nimród Antal’s Predators last December in Austin, I was able to speak with him along with a few other online reporters. While the cast of Predators were guarded when answering some of our questions, Nicotero was willing to talk about everything. We talked about the differences between the new Predators and the classic Predator, how the movie is using mostly practical effects, what he had to do to get the suits ready in time, and so much more. If you’re into makeup/creature effects, this is a must read interview. Hit the jump to check it out:

If you’re a fan of Danny Trejo, you’re going to enjoy going to movie theaters in 2010. That’s because not only is Trejo the lead in Robert Rodriguez’ Grindhouse movie Machete, he plays a killer brought to another planet in director Nimród Antal’s Predators.
When I got to visit the Predators set last December, Trejo spoke to the visiting journalists about both films and his thoughts for sequels to Machete. He also talked about working for Robert Rodriguez, his fellow co-stars, and a lot more. Hit the jump to either read or listen to what he had to say:
