One of the many films that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Ry Russo-Young‘s (You Won’t Miss Me) Nobody Walks. Written by Lena Dunham and Russo-Young, the ensemble drama stars John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt, India Ennenga and Justin Kirk. In the film, “Krasinski plays Peter, a Hollywood sound designer who’s agreed to help Martine (Thirlby) with her experimental art film as a favor to his wife (DeWitt). Martine, a beautiful and driven 23-year-old artist, comes to stay in the family’s pool house at their posh Silver Lake home, and her arrival ignites raw emotions and desires throughout the entire family.” Ennenga plays the daughter. Since premiering, Magnolia picked up the film for domestic distribution, so you’ll be able to see it at some point down the road.
During my interview with Ennenga we talked about being at Sundance, who she plays in the film and what it’s about, and how she got cast. In addition, with Ennenga currently filming Treme season 3, we talked about what we can expect from her character, the music of New Orleans, how much is improvised, and what else she has coming up. Sundance is over, which means it’s time to start looking forward to the eventual theatrical releases of the lucky selections. Three more movies landed a distribution deal over the weekend:
Look to the press releases after the break for details on each acquisition.

If you have followed our Sundance coverage over the last week and a half, you know how massive the festival can feel from afar. These are the movies that will fill arthouses over the next year, so perhaps the best place for those who could not make it to Park City to start is at the end, with the announcement of the awards. In terms of the major awards, the Grand Jury Prizes went to Beasts of the Southern Wild (Dramatic), The House I Live In (in the Documentary category), Violeta Went to Heaven (World Dramatic), and The Law in These Parts (World Documentary). Beasts of the Southern Wild, the consensus critical darling, also won for cinematography and a producers’ award. Thankfully Fox Searchlight made a deal to bring Beasts to a theater near you soon.
The Audience Awards went to The Surrogate (Dramatic), The Invisible War (Documentary), Valley of Saints (World Dramatic), and Searching for Sugar Man (World Documentary). The cast of The Surrogates—led by John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, and William H. Macy—doubled up with the Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting. Fox Searchlight also picked up The Surrogates. Love that studio. I had a blast at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and I can’t wait to go again next year. Today, Sundance announced their In-Competition line-ups for 2012 and already I’m trying to plan out how I’m going to see all of them (which is impossible, but it’s nice to dream). The U.S. Dramatic Competition features For Ellen, Nobody Walks, Safety Not Guaranteed, Smashed, and more. There are also some interesting-sounding films in the U.S. Documentary Competition including Finding North, The Invisible War, and The Other Dream Team.
Hit the jump to check out the full press release, which includes the in-competition line-ups for U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, and World Cinema Documentary Competition. The 2012 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 19 – 29th.

Dylan McDermott (Dark Blue) was recently tapped as the lead opposite Connie Britton in American Horror Story, a new drama Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (Glee) are developing for FX. Variety reports McDermott has set up two feature roles prior to filming on the pilot. The first is Nobody Walks, the indie dramedy which centers on “a Los Angeles family that takes in a stranger who winds up disrupting their lives.” John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Jane Levy also star. Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Me) will direct from a script she co-wrote with Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture).
Next up is the adaptation of the popular Stephen Chbosky young adult novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower about “a boy whose life dramatically changes as he learns about secrets buried deep in his past during his freshman year of high school.” Logan Lerman is the boy; McDermott will play his father. Emma Watson, Nina Dobrev, Mae Whitman, and Johnny Simmons also star. Chbosky will direct. Read the book synopsis after the jump.

Jane Levy is in talks to star in Fun Size, the feature directorial debut of Josh Schwartz (Chuck). Victoria Justice (Victorious) stars as Wren , “a sarcastic teen who takes her little brother-trick-or-treating only to lose him along the way.” THR indicates Levy is under consideration to play Wren’s best friend in the movie. Thomas Mann is in talks to play a debate team member in love with Wren.
I tend to love movies that take place over a single night, and the comedic blend of Schwartz and The Colbert Report writer Max Werner has potential. This sounds the ideal opportunity for Justice to transition into the next stage of her career. Levy is a fresh (and, might I add, incredibly beautiful) face in the acting game, with just a few episodes of Shameless on her resume. Levy recently starred in the ABC comedy pilot Suburgatory and is now preparing for her first feature role in the indie dramedy Nobody Walks.

John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt are in negotiations to star in Nobody Walks. You are a keen individual, and guessed from the collection of idiosyncratic actors that Nobody Walks is an independent drama. You are correct. (Note: the judges also would have accepted “low-budget dramedy.”) According to Variety, the film depicts one week in the life of “a Los Angeles family who invite a young, charismatic artist into their home, only to find her disrupting their lives.” Director Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Me) co-wrote the script with rising star Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture). Production is slated for the end of May in Los Angeles.
