From acclaimed Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and screenwriter J.H. Wyman (Fringe), the crime drama Dead Man Down tells the story of two strangers who are bound together by their mutual obsession with revenge.  Victor (Colin Farrell) is a mysterious man who has infiltrated the crime empire run by ruthless kingpin Alphonse (Terrence Howard) for his own very definite reasons, while his neighbor Beatrice (Noomi Rapace) wants Victor’s help to carry out her own plans for retribution.

At the film’s press day, actress Noomi Rapace talked about talked about reuniting with her The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev for this film, what it was like to add Colin Farrell to that mix, sharing her acting roles with her son so that he knows what she’s doing now, what it was like to see herself with all of her character’s scars, establishing the mother-daughter dynamic with co-star Isabelle Huppert, and how comfortable she is with English now.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

DEAD MAN DOWN Review

For a movie with two characters pursuing separate revenge stories, Niels Arden Oplev‘s Dead Man Down, manages to find a way to turn vendettas into plodding and tedious chores.  The film lacks the courage of its convictions, and when it writes itself into a corner, it simply refuses to acknowledge the shortcomings of the script, and trudges on to the next bland scene.  Oplev does seem to enjoy the cunning and violence his protagonist inflicts on the bad guys, but the revenge is so cliché that there’s no weight to any of the actions.  Vengeance has never been so dull.

While I was ultimately disappointed with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, it certainly did conjure up an awful lot of discussion and interest in Scott’s planned sequel.  Star Noomi Rapace recently spoke with the director about the second film and revealed that work on the script is still underway.  We don’t know who the writer is at the moment, but we do know that Damon Lindelof won’t return to the franchise.  Hit the jump to see what Rapace  did manage to talk about.

Back in December, we learned that Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace were looking to team up for the Dennis Lehane adaptation Animal Rescue.  Well now it appears that the duo may be planning back-to-back projects, as Heat Vision reports that Hardy and Rapace are in talks to star in Child 44.  The film is based on the book of the same name by Tom Rob Smith and takes place in the 1950s where it centers on a security officer in the Soviet Union who finds himself demoted and exiled while investigating a string of murders.

Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa is set to direct the thriller, with Hardy looking to play the Soviet officer and Rapace eyeing the role of his mysterious wife.  Ridley Scott and Michael Costigan are onboard to produce, and filming is hoping to get underway in May in Budapest, after Hardy and Rapace complete Animal Rescue which shoots in March.  Hit the jump to read a synopsis for Smith’s novel.

FilmDistrict has released a batch of new images from the upcoming revenge film Dead Man Down.  We recently caught a look at the film’s first trailer, and the footage promises a rather intense thriller led by Colin Farrell and Noomie Rapace.  Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (the Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Farrell stars as Victor, a right-hand-man for a New York crime lord who seeks revenge against his boss following the death of his wife and daughter.  When a victim (Rapace) blackmails Victor into getting some revenge of her own against the crime lord, the two get caught up in the fallout.  In addition to the release of these new images, FilmDistrict has announced that another trailer for the pic will be released on January 2nd, so check back here on Collider on Wednesday to take another gander at the film.

The first trailer has snuck online for Dead Man Down, an action thriller from writer J.H. Wyman (Fringe) and director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – 2009).  Dead Man Down stars Colin Farrell (Seven Psychopaths) as Victor, a right hand man for a New York crime lord who seeks vengeance against his boss for the death of his wife and daughter.  When a victim (Noomi Rapace - Prometheus) blackmails Victor into getting some revenge of her own, the two get caught up in the fallout.  The trailer, if overlong, is a balanced presentation of a dramatic character story and a Hollywood shoot em up.  Dead Man Down might have just nudged its way into my “Most Anticipated” list of early 2013.

Also starring Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double) and Terrence Howard (Iron Man), Dead Man Down opens theatrically March 8th.  Hit the jump to watch the first trailer.

Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace in Talks to Star in ANIMAL RESCUE

It looks like Tom Hardy is getting some company in the Dennis Lehane adaptation Animal Rescue. We previously reported that Hardy was being eyed to star in the pic as a lonely bartender who rescues a puppy from a garbage can and “becomes the target of the dog’s abusive and mentally unstable former owner, while simultaneously getting caught in the middle of a criminal conspiracy playing out in his mob-controlled bar.”  Now Deadline reports that Hardy is in final talks to topline the project, while Noomi Rapace is being offered the female lead.

Bullhead’s Michael R. Roskam recently stepped in to replace Neil Burger as the film’s director, and Fox Searchlight is eyeing a March start date in New York for production.  Lehane is the author of the previously adapted novels Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River, and Shutter Island, and he penned the script for Animal Rescue based on his own short story.  The film’s action has been moved from Boston to New York.

Plot Details Revealed for TRANSCENDENCE Starring Johnny Depp; Ewan McGregor and Tom Hardy Pass on Roles

When it was announced that director Christopher Nolan’s longtime cinematographer Wally Pfister would be making his directorial debut on an original sci-fi project called Transcendence, it wasn’t exactly shocking that plot details were being kept under wraps.  Nolan’s films have been wrapped in a similar amount of intrigue and secrecy, with the initial logline for Inception describing the film only as “a thriller set within the architecture of the mind.”  We recently reported that Johnny Depp was in talks to star in the film, and along with the casting news a few plot details started to leak that involved the main character getting sucked into a supercomputer.  Now further story points have been revealed, giving us a better idea of what to expect from Transcendence.

PROMETHEUS Blu-ray Review

prometheus-blu-ray-slice

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus was a geek’s dream. Scott, who directed Alien in 1979, was one of the great science fiction filmmakers, but hadn’t done anything in the genre since 1982 – since Blade Runner. And though Alien spawned a franchise, Scott had never made his own sequel. Prometheus was sold as a semi-prequel, an “in universe” film that takes place before the events of the first film, but may not tie into them directly. After a series of great trailers, there was hope that the film (which was also rated R, rare for a huge summer movie) would be awesome, would be a great Scott film. Alas, it’s more of a mess. Our review of the Blu-ray of Prometheus follows after the jump.

Johnny Depp in Talks to Star in Wally Pfister’s Directorial Debut, TRANSCENDENCE; Movie Billed as 2001: A SPACE ODDESSY Meets INCEPTION

Johnny Depp is in negotiations to lead Transcendence, the directorial debut from The Dark Knight Rises cinematographer Wally Pfister.  When the project was announced back in March, details were being kept under wraps.  The plot is still being kept under wraps other than the film now having a title.  So what does “Transcendence” refer to and why keep the logline secret?  Perhaps it could be too confusing or difficult to distill into a single sentence, although when Inception was announced, all we knew was it was a thriller “set in the architecture of the mind.”  It was intriguing even though it explained absolutely nothing.

Depp will next be seen in Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger, which opens July 3, 2013.  Hit the jump for the press release regarding Transcendence, which is scheduled to begin shooting early next year.  [Update: Hit the jump for more details about the project.]
