We’re always running tons of interviews here at Collider, but this past week has been especially crazy.  When you pair all the interviews Steve did during his visit to the sets of The Thing and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, coupled with the number of interviews we run on a daily basis, there’s probably some stuff you may have missed.  With this in mind, we’ve created a handy catch-all recap article that contains links to every interview we’ve posted over the last week.  Here’s some of them, but hit the jump for the rest:

Aaron Johnson Interview NOWHERE BOY

The drama Nowhere Boy details the crucial formative teenage years of John Lennon (Aaron Johnson), and depicts the events and personal circumstances that led to the later formation of the Beatles. Opening the weekend of Lennon’s birthday (he would have been 70 on October 9th), the film shows the clash between Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), the free-spirited mother who gave John away in his infancy for personal reasons, and her sister Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas), the Aunt who stepped in and raised him. When John turns to music as his escape path, he finds a kindred spirit in the teenage Paul McCartney (Thomas Brodie Sangster) and together they form a band that will eventually become the Beatles.

At a roundtable interview for the film’s press day, actor Aaron Johnson, best known for his work in Kick-Ass, talked about the overwhelming prospect of taking on a character as iconic as John Lennon, singing and playing guitar on film for the first time, doing justice to such a beloved individual, and receiving the praise of Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono for the final product. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Aaron Johnson and Director Sam Taylor Wood Video Interview NOWHERE BOY

Aaron Johnson and Director Sam Taylor Wood Video Interview NOWHERE BOY.jpg

If you haven’t heard of Aaron Johnson yet…I promise you will very soon.  That’s because in director Sam Taylor Wood’s Nowhere Boy, Johnson gives an amazing performance as a teenage John Lennon.  And in a few months,  Johnson will be everywhere, as he’s one of the leads in director Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass.  Trust me, this guy is going to be huge.

Anyway, at this year’s Sundance Film festival, I was able to speak with Aaron Johnson and Director Sam Taylor Wood about Nowhere Boy and our conversation is after the jump.  We talked about the delicate balancing act of trying to make a movie that’s based on such a famous person.  We also covered being at Sundance, what was it like on set, how did they prepare for the movie, and a lot more.  It’s a great interview so take a look.

Also, while Nowhere Boy has already been released in the UK, it’s still opening around the world.  I saw the film at Sundance and it’s great.  If you’re a Beatles fan, or just curious what Lennon’s life was like as a teenager, it’s really worth your time.

BAFTA Nominees Announced; AVATAR, THE HURT LOCKER, and AN EDUCATION Lead with 8 Nominations

The Brits certainly like our flicks with Avatar and The Hurt Locker scoring eight nominations each from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).  However, they didn’t overlook one of their own accomplished films with An Education also grabbing eight nominations.  But what’s really impressive about the BAFTA nominations isn’t where they’ll most likely overlap with the Oscar nominations, but where they’re going to diverge.  District 9 has seven nominations and matches Avatar in every category except Best Picture and Best Director (but it also has a Best Screenplay nomination, while Avatar does not).  I am a little surprised that in their Best Supporting Actor category, they overlooked Peter Capaldi for In the Loop, but you have to love a country where Andy Serkis can get nominated for Best Actor (that’s not meant ironically; it truly is great–we should’ve nominated him in 2002 for Best Supporting Actor for The Two Towers).

Hit the jump for the full list of nominees.  Winners will be announced on February 21st.

Duncan Jones’ MOON Wins Best Picture and Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards

One of the best sci-fi films of the past several years, Duncan Jones’ Moon took home both Best Picture and Best Debut Director at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.  The was also received nominations for Sam Rockwell for Best Actor, Duncan for Best Director (a category which included both debut and veteran directors), Nathan Parker for Best Screenplay, and two nominations in the Best Technical Achievement category with Clint Mansell getting a nod for Original Score and Tony Noble for Production Design.

Any victory for Moon is an important victory because while it received large critical acclaim, its June release may have left it slightly adrift in the minds of critics and societies compiling their Top 10 of 2009 lists.  I’ll admit that it is disappointing that Rockwell didn’t win, but he did lose to Tom Hardy’s universally loved performance in Bronson so it wasn’t like the BIFA made a grievous error.  What’s important for Moon is to just make sure people don’t forget about it.

Other big films at BIFA were Fish Tank (7 nominations, 2 wins), Nowhere Boy (6 nominations, 1 win), An Education (6 nominations, 1 win), and In the Loop (5 nominations, 1 win) Hit the jump for the full list of nominees and winners.

As we move closer to the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, we’re getting the first images of the films that will be playing there.  Since there are so many movies, we’ve decided to group them into a single article because the human brain can only handle so many new images before it starts to go mad.  The films we’ve included in this group Obselidia; Skateland starring the unbelievable hotness that is Ashley Greene; The Dry Land starring America Ferrera, Melissa Leo, and Wilmer Valderrama; The Imperialists Are Still Alive!; and Winter’s Bone starring Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes. We also have some more images for Nowhere Boy, the young John Lennon biopic starring Kristen Scott Thomas and Aaron Johnson.  Hit the jump for images and synopses for all these films.

The 2010 Sundance Film Festival will run from January 21-31st.

Trailer for NOWHERE BOY Starring Aaron Johnson as John Lennon

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

slice_nowhere_boy_01.jpg

I will watch anything “Beatles”-related.  I suffered through the entirety of “Across the Universe” because I love them so much.  If “Batman: Arkham Asylum” had Beatles songs it would be my favorite game of the year by far.  So even though I’m slightly wary of this tale, I will not miss “Nowhere Boy” because it’s a tale of how the Beatles came together…or not.  I don’t know if they’ll include George Harrison or if the reference to the “Buddy Holly”-look John sports at one point in the trailer is to how Stuart Sutcliffe, the band’s original drummer, suggested the name based off “Buddy Holly and the Crickets”.  I know that this is about the origin of John Lennon.  All I’m saying is that if this movie isn’t 100% historically accurate I’ll 100% hate it.  I try to put the “maniac” into “Beatlemaniac”.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  “Nowhere Boy” will premiere on the closing night of this year’s London Film Festival on October 29th and will open in theaters in the UK on Christmas Day.  No word yet of a US release.
