Brighton Rock, the debut feature from screenwriter Rowan Joffe, tells the story of Pinkie Brown (Sam Riley), an ambitious young gangster who will stop at nothing to make a name for himself in Britain’s sinister world of organized crime. When Rose (Andrea Riseborough), a naive local waitress, stumbles upon evidence that links Pinkie to a revenge killing, Pinkie uses his cunning and charm to seduce Rose, in an attempt to keep his alibi, but becomes truly intrigued by her.
Set in the picturesque seaside resort of Brighton, England, the film updates Graham Greene’s iconic 1939 novel to 1964, at the height of the Mods and Rockers riots, and gives it a new feel and flare, while remaining true to the story itself. During a recent interview to promote the film’s limited release on August 26th, actor Sam Riley talked about what attracts him to dark characters, how he feels the change in setting to the ‘60s allowed them to explore ideas that the original wasn’t able to, how happy he was to get to wear such great suits, and how working with such a great cast led to him having one of the most pleasurable working experiences he’s ever had. He also talked about the experience of making On The Road (co-starring Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst), getting himself in shape for the role and working with a dialect coach every day. The Cannes Film Festival is only halfway finished but we’re already looking ahead to another major European film fest: Venice. Early selections have been announced for the 68th Venice Film Festival and there are already some fantastic additions. Roman Polanski’s Carnage and David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method will both be making their world premieres at the festival along with Steve McQueen’s Shame, Todd Solondz’ Dark Horse, Cameron Crowe’s Pearl Jam documentary PJ20, and more. Variety also reports that films submitted but not yet approved for the festival include Madonna’s W.E., Walter Salles’ On the Road, and Luc Besson’s The Lady. Then there’s the film that are being tipped to premiere at Venice: Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, Steven Sodebergh’s Contagion and Haywire, and a toss-up between Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
So if you’re already seething with jealousy that you’re not attending Cannes this year, hold on to that jealousy because it looks like you’re going to need it when Venice rolls around. The 68th Venice Film Festival runs from August 31st to September 10th.

It has taken decades to get Jack Kerouac’s On the Road on the big screens, but producer Francis Ford Coppola and director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) have finally done it. Filming took place last year and the movie will likely make the festival rounds this fall. However, you need to get past a cast that’s a mixture of “great” and “sometimes good”. In the “great” category, you have Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard, and Sam Riley. And then as lead characters Dean Moriarty, Marylou, and Camille, you have Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, and Kirsten Dunst, respectively. It’s a diverse cast and I’m hoping that they all deliver, but expectations tend to build when you’re adapting a modern literary classic.

Waiting for Forever tells the story of Will Donner (Tom Sturridge), a charismatic and carefree young man who has chosen not to follow the more traditional path of a career, in favor of the pursuit of the love he has for his childhood best friend, Emma Twist (Rachel Bilson). Will and Emma have not seen each other since they were kids, but that has not lessened his feelings for her, in any way. His quest to reconnect with her has taken him on a journey from city to city, where he always attempts to engage in conversation with her, but becomes paralyzed at the thought. Once the two finally do reunite, what initially seems a bit obsessive soon leads them both down a path of self-realization.
During the film’s press day, co-stars Rachel Bilson and Tom Sturridge talked about this unique love story, relating to their characters, learning to juggle, and the importance of childhood friends who help get you through the tough times. They also talked about their upcoming roles – Tom is in On the Road, opposite Kristen Stewart and Sam Riley, and Rachel just finished the comedy BFF & Baby, opposite Kate Bosworth and Krysten Ritter. The first set photos from the big screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel On the Road were published last November, and new images from the Walter Salles directed movie have finally been released. The images show Salles’ choice of muted colors to depict the Sixties aesthetics and the smoky, hazy Beatnik ambience in which On the Road‘s heroes, Sal and Dean, evolve. Actors Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund look über-cool enough to play the lead roles of the Beat Generation’s most famous protagonists. Hit the jump for the synopsis and images:

Opening next weekend is director Mikael Hafstroem’s (1408) supernatural thriller The Rite and it stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, and Toby Jones. “Inspired by true events, The Rite follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.” For more on the film, watch some clips here.
Anyway, I recently got to sit down with Alice Braga and we talked about how she got involved in the film, what it was like to work with Anthony Hopkins, filming in Rome and Budapest, what she recommends if you visit Brazil, and she also told me about how she got involved in Walter Salles’ adaptation of On the Road, who she plays, and what it was like to make the film. After nearly three years of promotion, which started at San Diego Comic-Con in 2008, the highly anticipated Tron: Legacy is finally hitting theaters on December 17th. A high-tech adventure set in a digital world that is unlike anything ever captured or seen on the big screen, the film is a father-son story at its heart. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) is a rebellious 27-year-old who is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father, Kevin (Jeff Bridges). The world’s leading tech visionary, Kevin was pulled into a digital grid where he’s been trapped for the last 20 years, and where his son also finds himself suddenly trapped. In order to escape and return to their own world, they must embark on a life-or-death journey across the landscape of the Grid, using weapons and vehicles to elude a ruthless villain named Clu, that was created by Kevin himself.
In this exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Garrett Hedlund talked about taking on his first leading role, his excitement for everyone getting to see all of the hard work that director Joseph Kosinski put into bringing Tron: Legacy to life and keeping Sam’s jacket as a memento of filming. He also talked about becoming a country musician for Country Strong (opening in limited release on December 22nd and in wide release on January 7th, 2011), co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw, and the experience of playing Dean Moriarty in On The Road, which is something of a dream project for him. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

The drama All Good Things, co-starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, was inspired by the events of the most notorious missing person’s case in New York history. Both a love story and murder mystery, the story of Robert Durst, of the wealthy real estate dynasty, was that of a man suspected of, but never tried for, the murder of his wife Kathie, who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. Renamed David Marks (Ryan Gosling) and Katie McCarthy (Kirsten Dunst) for the film, newly discovered facts, court records and speculation about the case and the circumstances surrounding it are the foundation for an imaginative and spellbinding story of family, obsession, love and loss.
During a roundtable interview at the film’s press day, actress Kirsten Dunst talked about her desire to make sure her character never came across as a victim, the experience of meeting some of the real woman’s family members and how difficult it was for co-star Ryan Gosling to play the more physically aggressive moments. She also talked about what it was like working with Lars Von Trier on Melancholia, said she’s looking forward to seeing what they do with the Spider-Man franchise since she’s a fan of Andrew Garfield, and mentioned that she’d be shooting her role in On The Road in a couple weeks. After a rough ride, On the Road is finally getting closer to completion. After the first set photos, new shots from director Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel have been released, and appear to perfectly transcribe the poetic energy and black-and-white imagery that the story inevitably conjures up, raising the question whether the movie will also be in black-and-white.
Produced by Francis Ford Coppola, the film stars stars Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy) and Sam Riley (Control) as Sal Paradise, the mystic Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise embark on a road trip across North America in search of adventure and freedom. The cast also boasts a long, all-star cast, including Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Moretensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard and Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss. If the 23 minutes of footage that Disney showed the press at Digital Domain this past Saturday was any indication, Tron: Legacy is a high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen.
At the core of the story is a father-son relationship that resonates as much on the Grid as it does in the real world, as it provides a level of humanity that the programs that are trapped in it could never possess themselves. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) is a rebellious 27-year-old who is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), a man once known as the world’s leading tech visionary. When Sam investigates a strange signal believed to only have been able to come from his father, he finds himself pulled into the digital world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years, and the two must survive a life-or-death journey that includes never-before-imagined vehicles, weapons, landscapes and a ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to prevent their escape.
In this exclusive interview with Collider, actor Garrett Hedlund talked about playing Sam Flynn, the experience of working with someone as talented as Jeff Bridges and how much he already misses being on set for this project. He also revealed that he was involved in the additional footage that was shot after the film was completed, and how he’s playing another dream role in the smaller character drama On the Road, with Sam Riley and Kristen Stewart. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

An unofficial photo of Kristen Stewart as Marylou on the set of the long-in-development adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road has landed online. The film co-stars Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty, Sam Riley as Sal Paradise, Kirsten Dunst as Camille, Amy Adams as Jane, and Viggo Mortensen as Old Bull Lee.
Filming began on August 4th, and we received a press release announcing that Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Alice Braga (Predators), Tom Sturridge (Pirate Radio), Danny Morgan (the TV show Off the Hook), and Terrence Howard. However, we don’t know which roles they’ll be playing. I’d be able to provide an educated guess but I haven’t read the book yet. It’s currently sitting in a pile of other classic works of literature that I keep by my bed to make me feel bad about myself.

The cast of Walter Salles’ adaptation of the classic Jack Kerouac novel On the Road is rounding out nicely, as Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams have signed on to join stars Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, and Garrett Hedlund. Mortensen will assume the role of Old Bull Lee (a William S. Burroughs surrogate), while Adams will play his junkie wife, Jane. According to Deadline, Adams and Mortensen will shoot their scenes later this month.
Jose Rivera has scripted the adaptation, which revolves around a series of cross country trips taken by writer Sal Paradise (Riley). Hit the jump for a richer synopsis.

Like I said in the intro to the Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner video interviews, today was the big press junket for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse here in Los Angeles. While studios usually only let you use audio recorders for press conferences, Summit let us use video. This means you get to watch the cast talk rather than having to read it. I can only hope this is the beginning of more studios letting us use video.
Anyway, the second person in the room was Kristen Stewart and like you’ll see on the video, she was in great spirits and definitely excited to be talking about Eclipse. And after seeing it last night, I know why. It’s because the film is the best one yet as it’s loaded with action and the effects are much better than the previous two films. The movie felt like everyone involved was comfortable in their roles and I really think fans will love it.
Anyway, during the press conference Stewart talked about playing Bella, working with David Slade and the close-ups, her career, Bella’s wedding dress, when did she know Breaking Dawn would be two movies and how long is the shoot (6 months), are either Jacob or Edward actually good choices, her next movie On the Road, and so much more. It’s a great interview so take a look:
UPDATE: I’ve also posted the full transcript, so you can either read or watch the interview!

We have three pieces of casting news for you tonight. First up, Michael Peña (Observe and Report) and Nick Swardson (You Don’t Mess with the Zohan) are in talks to join Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride in 30 Minutes or Less, the next film from director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). Per THR, the film “revolves around a junior high history teacher (Ansari) and a pizza-delivery man who are forced to rob a bank when one of them is strapped to a bomb vest. (McBride is one of the men looking to score some cash.)” This is pretty funny because this actually happened to a guy…except the bomb was around his collar and it exploded before it could be defused and he died. I imagine the movie will probably be somewhat different. Anyway…Peña will play an assassin while Swardson will play a friend of McBride’s character.
Hit the jump for news on Kirsten Dunst joining On the Road and Katherine Heigl signing on to star in The Age of Adeline.

Kristen Stewart is joining Walter Salles’ (The Motorcycle Diaries) upcoming adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. USA Today (via The Playlist) reports that Stewart announced her involvement with the film after telling the newspaper that “I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever. Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in On the Road. So that’s a big deal.”
Seeing Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy) get cast as On The Road’s Dean Moriarity and now Stewart as Marylou, his young wife, is a great sign for fans of the novel who have been anticipating a film forever now. Various directors, including Francis Ford Coppola, have tried to make a film based on Jack Kerouac’s beloved 1957 novel for the past 30 years with no luck. Walter Salles seems to have figured it out though since filming is set to start this summer. More info on On the Road after the jump.
