The long-awaited first feature film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road is finally hitting theaters later this year, and two clips have landed online.  One clip features a scene between Garrett Hedlund’s Dean and Kirsten Dunst’s Camille, while the other clip centers on Kristen Stewart’s character.  As you may or may not have heard, Stewart tackles the sexually charged character of Marylou head-on with more than one nude scene, and it’s clear from the first reactions to the film that some of her young Twilight fans may be a bit shocked to see their beloved Bella promiscuously taking part in three-ways—if they’re old enough to get into the R-rated film in the first place, that is.

On the Road premiered yesterday at the Cannes Film Festival, and we’ve rounded up some choice quotes from the first reviews.  Hit the jump to check out the clips and to see how director Walter Salles’ adaptation was received at Cannes.

The Cannes Film Festival is about to get underway, and studios are rolling out their promotional material to make sure that those attending screenings of the festival’s films don’t forget about the studio releases that are still to come later this year.  Our correspondent Magdalena (who you can follow on twitter) walked around the area of the festival earlier today and snapped some photos of the posters and billboards that are on display.  In addition to a really cool banner for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, she also brought us our first look at the Tom Cruise thriller One Shot, based on the popular Jack Reacher character book series from author Lee Child.  Moreover, there’s a pretty great set-up for the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator outside one of the Carlton hotel.

Hit the jump to check out posters and billboards for The Amazing Spider-Man, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and more.

Though it’s certainly one of the more high profile indie projects to come along in quite some time, the first feature film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal tome On the Road has only now secured domestic distribution. IFC Films and Sundance Selects have acquired the distribution rights to director Walter Salles’ adaptation, with a theatrical release planned for sometime this fall.  Kristen Stewart, Garrett Hedlund, and Sam Riley front the all-star cast that also includes Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, and Elizabeth Moss.

I was a big fan of the first trailer, so I’m eager to check the full film out later this year.  On the Road will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next week, so we’ll have the first reactions/reviews soon.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer for the film.

The first feature film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic novel On the Road is finally slated for release this year, and now a new batch of images from the film has gone online.  The studio has been releasing some nifty character posters over the past few weeks, but this group of images gives us a better idea of what to expect from the adaptation.  I was quite a fan of the film’s trailer, and director Walter Salles’ (The Motorcycle Diaries) involvement is encouraging, so hopefully we’re in for a faithful iteration of Kerouac’s story that celebrates the spirit of the book.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film stars Kristen Stewart, Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Tom Sturridge, Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Elizabeth Moss, Alice Braga, and Danny MorganOn the Road is currently without a U.S. release date, but its slated to screen at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in May.

Following character posters for Viggo Mortensen and Tom Sturridge, three more posters from the upcoming adaptation of On the Road have been released. We get a look at Amy Adams, Elizabeth Moss, and Alice Braga in the long-awaited feature film version of Jack Kerouac’s classic novel. I was quite impressed by the first trailer for the film, and I’m encouraged by The Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles behind the camera. I think this character poster idea is quite nifty, and these three make a nice addition to the set.

Hit the jump to check Peggy Olsen getting her Kerouac on. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, Kirsten Dunst, and Danny Morgan.

First Trailer for Jack Kerouac Adaptation ON THE ROAD Starring Kristen Stewart, Garret Hedlund, Sam Riley and More

Although Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road was published more than fifty years ago, there has never been a film adaptation of it. All that changed when producer Francis Ford Coppola and The Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles signed on, adding Garret Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) as the starring role of Dean Moriarty. Now we have a look at the first trailer from the film, which is set to open in France this May with a possible domestic distribution pick up if and when the film premiers at Cannes (May 16th – May 27th). The Beat generation road trip film also stars Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Alice Braga and Elisabeth Moss. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

New Poster and Images for Walter Salles’ Adaptation of ON THE ROAD

It’s been 55 years since Jack Kerouac‘s beat novel On the Road was published, and in that time there’s never been a movie.  Francis Ford Coppola optioned the rights back in the 1970s, but production didn’t start moving ahead until April 2010 when Walter Salles (The Motorocycle Diaries) was attached to direct and Garrett Hedlund was cast in the lead role of Dean Moriarty.  The movie then lined-up an impress cast featuring Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Alice Braga and Elisabeth Moss.  The movie is now finally set for release in France this May, and new images and the first poster have gone online.  The release in May strongly hints towards a premiere at Cannes (which runs from May 16 – 27th) where the movie will likely pick up U.S. distribution.

Hit the jump to check out the poster and images.  I’ve never read the book (it’s on my spring reading list), but I’m curious to know what fans think of what they’ve seen of the film so far.

Sam Riley Talks BRIGHTON ROCK and ON THE ROAD

by Christina Radish    Posted: August 23rd, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Brighton Rock, the debut feature from screenwriter Rowan Joffe, tells the story of Pinkie Brown (Sam Riley), an ambitious young gangster who will stop at nothing to make a name for himself in Britain’s sinister world of organized crime. When Rose (Andrea Riseborough), a naive local waitress, stumbles upon evidence that links Pinkie to a revenge killing, Pinkie uses his cunning and charm to seduce Rose, in an attempt to keep his alibi, but becomes truly intrigued by her.

Set in the picturesque seaside resort of Brighton, England, the film updates Graham Greene’s iconic 1939 novel to 1964, at the height of the Mods and Rockers riots, and gives it a new feel and flare, while remaining true to the story itself. During a recent interview to promote the film’s limited release on August 26th, actor Sam Riley talked about what attracts him to dark characters, how he feels the change in setting to the ‘60s allowed them to explore ideas that the original wasn’t able to, how happy he was to get to wear such great suits, and how working with such a great cast led to him having one of the most pleasurable working experiences he’s ever had. He also talked about the experience of making On The Road (co-starring Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst), getting himself in shape for the role and working with a dialect coach every day. Early 2011 Venice Film Festival Announcements include Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE and David Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD

carnage-a-dangerous-method-slice-01

The Cannes Film Festival is only halfway finished but we’re already looking ahead to another major European film fest: Venice.  Early selections have been announced for the 68th Venice Film Festival and there are already some fantastic additions.  Roman Polanski’s Carnage and David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method will both be making their world premieres at the festival along with Steve McQueen’s Shame, Todd Solondz’ Dark Horse, Cameron Crowe’s Pearl Jam documentary PJ20, and more.  Variety also reports that films submitted but not yet approved for the festival include Madonna’s W.E., Walter Salles’ On the Road, and Luc Besson’s The Lady.  Then there’s the film that are being tipped to premiere at Venice: Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, Steven Sodebergh’s Contagion and Haywire, and a toss-up between Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

So if you’re already seething with jealousy that you’re not attending Cannes this year, hold on to that jealousy because it looks like you’re going to need it when Venice rolls around.  The 68th Venice Film Festival runs from August 31st to September 10th.

Promo Poster for ON THE ROAD

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 7:52 am

on-the-road-promo-poster-slice-01

It has taken decades to get Jack Kerouac’s On the Road on the big screens, but producer Francis Ford Coppola and director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) have finally done it. Filming took place last year and the movie will likely make the festival rounds this fall. However, you need to get past a cast that’s a mixture of “great” and “sometimes good”. In the “great” category, you have Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard, and Sam Riley. And then as lead characters Dean Moriarty, Marylou, and Camille, you have Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, and Kirsten Dunst, respectively. It’s a diverse cast and I’m hoping that they all deliver, but expectations tend to build when you’re adapting a modern literary classic.

Rachel Bilson and Tom Sturridge Interview WAITING FOR FOREVER

by Christina Radish    Posted: February 3rd, 2011 at 2:50 pm

Waiting for Forever tells the story of Will Donner (Tom Sturridge), a charismatic and carefree young man who has chosen not to follow the more traditional path of a career, in favor of the pursuit of the love he has for his childhood best friend, Emma Twist (Rachel Bilson). Will and Emma have not seen each other since they were kids, but that has not lessened his feelings for her, in any way. His quest to reconnect with her has taken him on a journey from city to city, where he always attempts to engage in conversation with her, but becomes paralyzed at the thought. Once the two finally do reunite, what initially seems a bit obsessive soon leads them both down a path of self-realization.

During the film’s press day, co-stars Rachel Bilson and Tom Sturridge talked about this unique love story, relating to their characters, learning to juggle, and the importance of childhood friends who help get you through the tough times. They also talked about their upcoming roles – Tom is in On the Road, opposite Kristen Stewart and Sam Riley, and Rachel just finished the comedy BFF & Baby, opposite Kate Bosworth and Krysten Ritter.
