The Cannes Film Festival is about to get underway, and studios are rolling out their promotional material to make sure that those attending screenings of the festival’s films don’t forget about the studio releases that are still to come later this year. Our correspondent Magdalena (who you can follow on twitter) walked around the area of the festival earlier today and snapped some photos of the posters and billboards that are on display. In addition to a really cool banner for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, she also brought us our first look at the Tom Cruise thriller One Shot, based on the popular Jack Reacher character book series from author Lee Child. Moreover, there’s a pretty great set-up for the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator outside one of the Carlton hotel.

Word of a sequel to Tony Scott’s Top Gun started bubbling up a few years ago. At the time, most believed Tom Cruise would only be returning for a small role and that the film would center on a new young group of pilots. Movement on the sequel began to pick up in the ensuing months, and as recently as February we learned that Peter Craig (The Town) was working on a script for the sequel that would feature Cruise in a starring role and would see Scott return as director.
Paramount President Adam Goodman recently sat down for an extended conversation with THR and he provided updates on a slew of upcoming projects including Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, World War Z, One Shot, another entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise, and the aforementioned Top Gun sequel. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Last night at CinemaCon 2012, Paramount and DreamWorks Animation showed off footage from their upcoming 2012 movies including director Christopher McQuarrie‘s One Shot (starring Tom Cruise), Sacha Baron Cohen‘s The Dictator, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Rise of the Guardians, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
In addition to the footage, if you’re a fan of J.J. Abrams Star Trek and anxiously awaiting the sequel, during a tribute to a retiring Paramount executive, Abrams was interviewed on set wearing a very cool Star Trek 2 crew hat. While he was only on screen for a few seconds, it was clear he was on the deck of the Enterprise, the hat had a number 2 in the front, and I immediately wanted to own one. Hit the jump for more.

We’ve got a few more casting stories for you this evening. First up, The Help star Octavia Spencer is in negotiations to join the cast of Diablo Cody’s untitled directorial debut. Penned by Cody, the comedy “follows a sheltered young woman (Julianne Hough) who loses her faith after a plane crash and decides to go to Las Vegas to experience the wild side of life. On her journey, she meets an unlikely companion (Russell Brand) who inadvertently helps her find her true self.” Showblitz reports that Spencer will play a card dealer at the casino where Brand’s character works. Spencer was celebrated for her more dramatic turn in this summer’s hit drama The Help. She’s also in talks to star in the indie dramedy Smashed. Production on Diablo Cody’s untitled project (previously referred to as Lamb of God) is set to begin next Spring.

This is some of the best casting news in just about forever. Writer-director Werner Herzog, who has taken the occasional minor acting role in his long filmmaking career, will play the villain in Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of One Shot. Tom Cruise stars in the film as retired military investigator Jack Reacher, an ex-military investigator-turned-drifter who “gets sucked into the mystery surrounding the arrest of a sniper accused of killing five random people in a shooting.” According to Variety, “Herzog will play The Zec, an ex-prisoner of war who arranges and stages the killing and is the head of the conspiracy.” That’s right: Herzog’s not just playing a villain. He’s playing a villain with an awesome name. This almost makes up for Herzog’s latest documentary, Into the Abyss. While his acting resume may be sparse, Herzog’s best-known character is himself and I’ll be interested to see how much Herzog is in The Zec.
The film also stars Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel. One Shot opens February 8, 2013.

The first set photos from Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of Lee Child’s One Shot and Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy have leaked online. Since these aren’t superhero movies and we’re not trying to glance fancy costumes, there’s not much you can glean from these set photos. Tom Cruise is playing ex-military investigator Jack Reacher in One Shot. The character will have short hair and drive a sweet ride. As for Weisz, we knew she would be playing “an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne (Jeremy Renner),” and apparently the character will be rocking a sweet, sweet lab coat.
Hit the jump to check out the set photos. One Shot is due out February 8, 2013 and co-stars Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3, 2012 and also stars Oscar Isaac, Scott Glenn, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, and Edward Norton.

Fans of Lee Child’s novel One Shot may be unhappy with Tom Cruise being cast as Jack Reacher in Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation, but it’s getting tough to complain about the supporting cast. Last week we reported that Richard Jenkins had joined the cast and now Variety is reporting that Oscar-winner Robert Duvall has come on board. Variety has no details on his character beyond saying that Dvuall has a small but pivotal role which is significant to Reacher’s investigation into a sniper accused of murdering five people.
Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel. The film also stars Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo. One Shot is due out February 8, 2013. As for Duvall, he recently wrapped shooting on Billy Bob Thornton’s Jayne Mansfield’s Car and the indie thriller Mississippi Wild, which stars Dakota Fanning and Ryan Donowho.

It’s tough for me to get excited about One Shot when everyone I talk to says the Jack Reacher character in Lee Child’s novels is about as far from Tom Cruise as you can get. But Cruise is playing Reacher and we have to cross our fingers that Christopher McQuarrie will still make an entertaining film out of it. At least the cast has gotten a big boost by adding the talented Richard Jenkins to its ranks.
The story has Reacher, a former military investigator, called out of retirement to look into the case of a sniper accused of murdering five people before being captured. Rosamund Pike has been cast as Reacher’s love-interest while David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will play “a veteran homicide detective investigating the mall sniping.” According to Variety, “Jenkins would play the district attorney who prosecutes the sniper.” Jenkins will next be seen alongside Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Help were the two biggest hits of August, and probably the two biggest surprises of the summer. They have one thing in common: David Oyelowo. That visibility will lead to at least one more high-profile gig, as Oyelowo is in final negotiations to star opposite Tom Cruise One Shot. Cruise will play Jack Reacher, the character created by Lee Child for a series of crime novels. In One Shot, the ex-Army cop “gets sucked into the mystery surrounding the arrest of a sniper accused of killing five random people in a shooting.” Rosamund Pike will play Cruise’s love interest. According to Variety, Oyelowo will play “a veteran homicide detective investigating the mall sniping.”
Christopher McQuarrie is on board to direct from his own adapted screenplay this fall in Pittsburgh. McQuarrie has previously written for Cruise before on Valkyrie and the upcoming Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Paramount has scheduled One Shot for release on February 8, 2013. Read the book synopsis after the jump.

On Sunday, we reported that Hayley Atwell, Rosamund Pike, and Alexa Davalos were testing to play the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in the action flick One Shot. Today, THR is reporting that the role has gone to Ms. Pike. Paramount Pictures and Skydance were reportedly looking for “a pedigreed yet non-A-list actress for the role,” (read: talented but not expensive) and Pike certainly fits the bill. Pike will be playing the role of Helen Rodin who joins teams up with badass Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) to investigate a shooting after the accused man pleads innocence and calls on Reacher for help. Rodin must square off against her father, the district attorney of Indianapolis, to defend the accused. Pike most recently starred in Made in Dagenham and she’s playing Andromeda in next year’s sequel to Clash of the Titans.
Christopher McQuarrie (Way of the Gun) wrote the script and will direct the adaptation of Lee Child’s novel. Hit the jump for the synopsis. Paramount plans to begin shooting this fall and release One Shot on February 8, 2013.

Rising star Brit Marling eyed the female lead in One Shot earlier this month, but chose to star The Company You Keep instead. That leaves a vacancy in a high profile action-thriller for another rising star to star opposite Tom Cruise. THR reports Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger), Rosamund Pike (Barney’s Version), and Alexa Davalos (Clash of the Titans) are reading for the part with writer/director Christopher McQuarrie. Pike and Atwell aren’t new to these kinds of lists. And Pike will replace Davalos as Andromeda in the Clash of the Titans sequel, further implying homogeneity among young starlets. Not to detract from the talent of these ladies. I have not seen Davalos in anything, but I thought Atwell and Pike were great in the little I’ve seen of their work.
One Shot is based on the novel of the same name in Lee Childs’ Jack Reacher series. Cruise plays “an ex-Army cop who gets sucked into the mystery surrounding the arrest of a sniper accused of killing five random people in a shooting.” Paramount is planning on a fall shoot in Pittsburgh for a February 8, 2013 release. Read the book synopsis after the break.

Brit Marling is having a very good year. She starred in and co-wrote the critically acclaimed Another Earth and the upcoming Sound of My Voice and now the offers are pouring in. Vulture reports that she’s being courted for Robert Redford’s political drama The Company You Keep and the action-thriller One Shot starring Tom Cruise. Marling has already passed on Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, which has Channing Tatum playing Channing Tatum about Channing Tatum’s early years as male stripper (I can’t think of a movie I want to see less even if it did co-star Marling). Instead, Marling chose to reteam with her Sound of My Voice director Zal Batmanglij for The East, a thriller she co-wrote with him about an FBI agent who infiltrates an ecoterrorist group. Fox Searchlight intends to start filming on The East this October provided they can find a huge star to anchor it.

Huzzah! More release date news! Following the news that Paramount would release G.I. Joe: Retaliation on June 29, 2012, Deadline reports that the studio has now rescheduled Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol for December 16th and set their other Tom Cruise film, One Shot, for February 8, 2013. Hit the jump for more details on both projects and what competition they’ll have on their release dates.

After starring in what might be his last Mission: Impossible movie, Tom Cruise is already moving on to a new action franchise. Cruise has penned a deal with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions to star as Jack Reacher, a retired military policeman turned crime-fighting drifter, in One Shot. Based on the novel series by Lee Child, Reacher is a reoccurring character known for his stoic nature, brutality in dealing with villains and his imposing size. The plot of One Shot revolves around Reacher investigating an accused sniper who gunned down five seemingly innocent victims. Though it is set in a Midwestern town, the movie is expected to film in Pittsburgh. Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun) is attached as the writer/director.
