“Orphan,” Warner Brothers’ deliciously demented recent updating of the vile-child genre, slashes its way onto Blu-ray and DVD this Halloween. Although horror fans familiar with its long list of movie predecessors will likely anticipate some of its initial storytelling tricks, “Orphan” features a truly twisted third act twist that should make it a surprise treat for even the most wintered horror fan. My full review after the jump:

One week at number one was all “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” could manage after all. The sixth installment in Warner Brother’s epic wizarding-world saga succumbed to the superior numbers of Disney’s “G-Force”, which opened this weekend to a total of $32.2 million from 3,697 theatres – including 1,603 in Digital 3D. Falling over 61% in its second weekend, “Half-Blood” still pulled in a respectable $30 million – good enough for second place and to bring the film’s worldwide total above $457 million. “The Ugly Truth” earned a very solid $27 million in its first weekend from 2,882 locations – proving that audiences are still in the mood to spend lavishly on romantic-comedies, no matter how terrible and ill-conceived those comedies might be. And bringing up the rear of this weekend’s new releases parade, Dark Castle’s “Orphan” earned $12.8 million from its 2,750 venues.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | G-Force | $32,152,000 | $32,152,000 |

| 9 | Public Enemies | $4,170,000 | $88,096,000 |
| 10 | Bruno | $2,719,000 | $56,516,000 |

At this time last year the box office was still being dominated by one blockbuster release – something to do with Batman, if I recall. The summer of 2009 has had nothing like the single-title excitement of “The Dark Knight”, however, and already in the last weekend of July the studios are throwing multiple, genre-specific titles at the screen to see what sticks. Disney has the CGI hamster action of “G-Force” out in both Digital 3D and standard versions and – if Friday’s opening day numbers are any indication – “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” may have a hard time holding on to the top spot against the cunning rodents. Sony’s “The Ugly Truth” is playing well to the romantic-comedy crowd while producer Joel Silver’s “Orphan” seems to be courting the under-served “kids without parents are creepy” demographic. “Half-Blood” did manage to cross the $200 million mark on its tenth day out so check back tomorrow to see if that magic can overcome “G-Force” for the weekend title…
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | G-Force | $11,500,000 | $11,500,000 |
| 2 | The Ugly Truth | $10,800,000 | $10,800,000 |
| 3 | Harry Potter 6 | $9,300,000 | $201,100,000 |
| 4 | Orphan | $4,900,000 | $4,900,000 |
| 5 | Ice Age 3 | $2,600,000 | $165,700,000 |

What would you do if strange things started to happen when you brought home an adopted child? Would you think it was all coincidence, or would you think something was wrong with the girl? Because in director Jaume Collet-Serra’s new film “Orphan”, Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard have different reactions to what’s happening around them. In the film, they play parents who decide to adopt a young girl named Esther after losing their third child. Unfortunately for them, the child has some issues….
So to help promote the film, I sat down with the two stars and they talked about why this genre is so popular, Peter talks about some of his favorite films in the genre, and a lot more. Also, Vera talked about her work in Jason Reitman’s “Up in the Air” and Peter talked about his next film, “An Education”. Take a look after the jump:

I love talking to directors. That’s because while actors are great to talk with, director’s are the ones with the real stories. After all, a director is the one who cast the leads and they’re also the ones who decided on the look and feel of whatever movie you’re watching. Ultimately, if you love or hate a movie, it’s the director who deserves the praise or scorn.
And director Jaume Collet-Serra (“House of Wax”) proved my point about talking to directors as he had a lot to say about the look of “Orphan” and why he wanted to make the film. He also talked about the alternate ending that’s going to be on the DVD/Blu-ray, film versus digital, and what he has coming up – it’s another Dark Castle film called “Unknown White Male”. If you’ve been looking forward to “Orphan”, Jaume has a lot to say so take a look:

When Warner Bros. announced their Comic-Con schedule, the first film I looked for was “Ninja Assassin”. After all, the film arrives in theaters November 25th, so it’s a perfect movie to promote at the convention. Also, as a big fan of “V for Vendetta” (which was the last pairing of the Wachowski Brothers and director James McTeigue), “Ninja Assassin” is on my must see list. So when it wasn’t on the list of films being promoted, I was a bit concerned.
But thanks to an extremely reliable source, I can report the reason they weren’t promoting the film during their panel is because they are showing the entire film at Comic-Con. And the best part for all of you, it’s open to the public! Want to know how to go, it’s after the jump:

Anytime you sit down with producer Joel Silver you’re going to learn about a lot of upcoming films. That’s because as the producer of over 90 movies, the guys is always making them and he has his hand in many projects fandom cares about. So when I got the chance to speak with him at yesterday’s “Orphan” junket, towards the end of the interview I asked about many of his upcoming projects.
After the jump you can either read or watch Joel talk about what’s up with Shane Black, The Wachowski Brothers, “Sgt. Rock”, “The Dirty Dozen” and “Greyskull”.

Opening this Friday is Warner Bros. new thriller “Orphan”. The film was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (“House of Wax”) and it stars Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, CCH Pounder and Jimmy Bennett. If you aren’t familiar with the film, it’s about an evil orphan that comes to live with Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard’s family….
So to help promote the film, we’ve been provided with six clips and they’re after the jump – along with the full synopsis. Take a look. Also, in the next day or so expect interviews with Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard, director Jaume Collet-Serra, and producers Joel Silver and Susan Downey.
I like to take messages away from trailers. If it’s “Terminator Salvation”, it’s that robots will rise up and destroy us. If it’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, it’s that dark wizards will rise up and destroy us. And if it’s this new trailer for “Orphan”, the message is that adopted children will rise up and destroy us. Do not adopt orphans. They’re orphans for a reason and if God wanted them to have parents, he wouldn’t have killed their parents in the first place.*
“Orphan” is in the spooky-child genre of horror and I find that it’s a genre that you either love or hate. Personally, I can’t be scared of something I can dropkick. The trailer looks like a remake of “The Bad Seed” except with adoption and since we’ve pinpointed “adoption” as the problem, we can make sure to avoid it just like we do machines and wizards.
Check out the trailer after the jump. “Orphan” hits theatres on July 24th.
