Director Guillermo del Toro finally has a new directorial feature film set for release next year.  He spent quite a while preparing to direct The Hobbit before leaving when he thought the film would be held up in MGM’s legal troubles for years, then he started prepping At the Mountains of Madness with Tom Cruise only to have Universal pass on the project in favor of things like Battleship.  All’s well that end’s well, as del Toro recently wrapped his first directorial effort since Hellboy II: The Golden Army, a monster movie called Pacific Rim.

Little details have been known about the plot for Pacific Rim other than the fact that del Toro promises “the finest fucking monsters ever committed to screen” and the film involves battles between human-manned robots and monsters.  A rumored plot synopsis surfaced back in March of 2011, and now Warner Bros. has released an official synopsis for the film that seems to confirm much of that earlier premise.  Hit the jump for the full synopsis.

New Video and Photos from the PACIFIC RIM Set Show How Guillermo del Toro Turned Toronto Into Tokyo

CBC News posted a video report that marvels at how a $150 million Hollywood movie transformed Toronto into a “Japanese disaster zone.”  The production directed by Guillermo del Toro is referred to as Silent Seas and Still Seas in the report, but we know it better as Pacific Rim.  We don’t see any filming in the video, but it is neat to see the detail of the set design, from the various signage right down to the plastic cherry blossoms tied into the trees.  Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Diego Klattenhoff, and Clifton Collins Jr. star in the movie that pits humans (and their robots) against monsters.  Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013.  Hit the jump to watch the set video and check out a few photos of the disaster zone that a kind reader sent in.

With Neveldine/Taylor’s Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance opening next weekend, the other day I interviewed a lot of the cast in New York City.  In the sequel, Johnny Blaze (Cage) is hiding out in Eastern Europe when a motor-cycle riding warrior monk (Idris Elba) recruits him to save a young boy (Fergus Riordan) from the Devil (Ciaran Hinds). The film also stars Violante Placido, Anthony Head, Christopher Lambert and Johnny Whitworth. For more on Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeace, here’s my Romania set visit, on set interviews, new images, five movie clips, and 12 minutes of behind the scenes footage from when the production was filming in Europe.

During my interview with Elba we talked about working with Cage, the stunts, filming in Romania, working with Neveldine/Taylor and what they brought to the film, and whether people want to talk about The Wire, Thor or Luther.   In addition, with Elba currently filming Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, he talked about how that shoot has been going and I also asked his favorite movie, actor and director.  Hit the jump to watch.

Norwegian Wood is a moving tale of loss and sexuality set in Tokyo in the late 1960s and adapted from Japanese author Haruki Murakami’s bestselling 1987 novel. In this haunting coming-of-age story, Watanabe (Kenichi Matsuyama) looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo during a turbulent political time. Through his reminiscences about a series of life-altering events that include first love, sexual awakening, suicide and terminal illness, we see him develop relationships with two very different women, the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko (Rinko Kikuchi), and the outgoing, vivacious Midori (Kiko Mizuhara).

We recently did an exclusive phone interview with the Academy Award nominated Kikuchi to talk about Norwegian Wood and what it was like to be a part of Vietnamese-born director Anh Hung Tran’s visually stunning film. She told us what attracted her to the project, how Tran had reservations about casting her in the role initially, what she felt were the most challenging aspects of her character, and why she thinks an audience will enjoy the poetic story and characters. She also talked about her upcoming roles in Carl Erik Rinsch’s epic period Samurai film, 47 Ronin, and Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi thriller, Pacific Rim.  Hit the jump for more.

Warner Bros. Moves Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM Release Date to May 10, 2013

Warner Bros. is doing a little release date shifting, as they’ve moved the release date of Guillermo del Toro’s next directorial effort Pacific Rim up two months to May 10th, 2013 (per Deadline). The sci-fi pic had previously been dated for July, but it looks like it’ll open during a very crowded May. Iron Man 3 is slated to open a week earlier, on May 3rd, with Roland Emmerich’s own sci-fi flick Singularity set to open a week later on May 17th. Justin Lin’s Fast and Furious 6 and Gore Verbinski’s no longer on hold (after some budget and story shifts) The Lone Ranger also open later that month. In other words, our eyeballs may suffer some intense fatigue by the end of the first month of the Summer movie season.

Set in the future, Pacific Rim centers on an epic battle between humans (aided by human-manned robots) and attacking monsters. Production on the film is set to get underway next month. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Willem Dafoe, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Diego Klattenhoff, and Clifton Collins Jr.

Woody Harrelson to Reteam With Jesse Eisenberg for NOW YOU SEE ME; Diego Klattenhoff Joins Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

While it’s not quite a sequel, a Zombieland reunion of sorts is in the works. Woody Harrelson is currently in negotiations to star in the magician heist pic Now You See Me alongside Jesse Eisenberg. Louis Leterrier is directing the flick which centers on an illusionist troupe that pulls off bank heists in the middle of their bewildering performances, then gives the loot to the audience. The cast includes Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fischer and Melanie Laurent. Variety reports that Harrelson will play “a mentalist and hypnotist known for his Jedi-style mind tricks.” An incident overseas forces him to flee to the U.S. where he joins the magician group known as the Four Horseman. As if the premise and existing cast weren’t enough to entice me, Harrelson’s addition guarantees my ticket sold. Hit the jump for the casting news of Diego Klattenhoff in Pacific Rim.

Willem Dafoe JOHN CARTER interview slice

At last weekend D23 (essentially Disney’s Comic-Con), I was able to speak with Willem Dafoe about director Andrew Stanton’s John Carter.  He talked about who he plays (Tars Tarkas), what the movie is about, and the challenges of making the film.  For more on John Carter, you can read my 20 things to know about the movie from my edit bay visit.  In addition,  Dafoe also talked a bit about Odd Thomas, is he going to work with Guillermo del Toro on Pacific Rim, The Hunter (which premieres at TIFF) and Abel Ferrara’s The Last Day on Earth.  Hit the jump to watch.  You can also watch all my video interviews from D23 here.

We’ve got a few casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Variety reports that Clifton Collins Jr. is the latest actor to join Guillermo del Toro’s next directorial effort Pacific Rim. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Max Martini, and Rob Kazinisky and the director has promised that the pic will feature “the finest fucking monsters ever committed to screen,” so there’s that. Willem Dafoe is also in talks to join the future-set epic, which is scheduled for release on July 12, 2013.

Additionally, the fantastic Chazz Palminteri has joined the cast of the somewhat troubled biopic Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father. Palminteri will play Mafia boss Paul Castellano alongside an ensemble that includes Al Pacino, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, and Ben Foster. Production begins on location in New York on January 3rd. Willem Dafoe and Rob Kazinsky Join Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

Rob Kazinsky had to drop out of The Hobbit in April for personal reasons, but he is again ready for a tentpole.  Variety reports Kazinsky has joined the cast of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim as a member of the team fighting alien invaders.  Moreover, Willem Dafoe is in early talks to play a “rogue scientist with expertise on alien creatures.”  Sounds like perfect casting.  Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Max Martini also star.

After a couple of false starts, Del Toro is chomping at the bit to shoot his next movie in November.  To give you an idea of what’s in store, Del Toro has called it “the biggest giant monster movie ever made“  and promised  “the finest fucking monsters ever committed to screen” at Comic-Con.  Pacific Rim is scheduled for release on July 12, 2013.

ComicCon Charlie Hunnam Ron Perlman Interview SONS OF ANARCHY slice

To premiere a scene from Season 4, showcasing the gang’s release from a 14-month prison stint following the aftermath of last season’s finale, the hit FX drama Sons of Anarchy got to make their Hall H debut at Comic-Con. Prior to the panel, co-stars Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman sat down for a roundtable with some press to hint at what fans can expect for the upcoming season.

During the interview, the actors explained how Charming is a very different place with a new mayor and sheriff, how that will affect SAMCRO and their vision for their town, that 14 months of prison has brought Jax and Clay closer together, that Jax (Hunnam) will struggle with whether or not to stay in the club while Clay (Perlman) will do everything with a greater sense of urgency and desperation, and how Season 4 will focus on the internal world of the Sons. Hunnam also talked about what led him to sign on for the sci-fi film Pacific Rim (due in 2013), how he thinks Guillermo del Toro is one of the best filmmakers in the world, and how lucky it was that the film will shoot during hiatus for the show. Check out what they had to say after the jump:
