ASC Nominates BOARDWALK EMPIRE, PAN AM, MODERN FAMILY, and More for Cinematography

The American Society of Cinematographers announced their nominations for the best-photographed TV of 2011.  Boardwalk Empire topSthe list with 2 nominations in the one-hour drama category.  HBO also had a presence in the movie/miniseries category with Mildred Pierce and the half-hour series category with Bored to Death.  (This is the first year the ASC introduced a half-hour category.)  I am happy to see Pan Am among the nominees, because the pilot was gorgeous.  Due to the specific nature of the awards, there are a few curious selection that won’t get awards attention anywhere else, like Chase and Man Up.  Reminds me of my surprise at discovering that Home Improvement won 7 Emmys, all of which were awarded to apparent lighting guru Donald A. Morgan for Outstanding Lighting Direction.

Producer David Heyman Talks HARRY POTTER, 3D Re-Releases, PAGE EIGHT Sequels, PADDINGTON BEAR, GRAVITY, and More

With the DVD/Blu-ray release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 last week, Warner Bros. Home Video invited a number of reporters from around the world to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida to help promote its release.  While there, I got to speak with the cast as well as some of the filmmakers behind one of my favorite films of the year.  Over the last week I posted video interviews with director David Yates, Rupert Grint, Warwick Davis, Jason Isaacs, Evanna Lynch and Mark Williams, and James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley).  And for the last interview, I’ve got an extended conversation with producer David Heyman.

During the interview, Heyman talks about being at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and what impressed him, what fans always want to talk about when they approach him, his thoughts on WB home video pulling the Potter movies at the end of the year, his memories of making the franchise, if there’s a mega box set with new extras coming in the future, and if he thinks WB might re-release the movies theatrically in 3D down the road.  In addition, Heyman talked about other projects like Paddington Bear, Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity, his Beatles animated project, Page Eight sequels, and more. Bill Nighy Talks ARTHUR CHRISTMAS, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, WRATH OF THE TITANS, TOTAL RECALL, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, More

In the animated family comedy Arthur Christmas, actor Bill Nighy voices the rather naughty Grandsanta. Upon his retirement, his lovely old sleigh and all of the reindeer who guided it were put out to pasture, in favor of an ultra-high-tech operation that allows for 18.14 seconds to get into each house, deliver the presents, and move on to the next, for the hundreds of millions of children in the world. So, when Santa’s (Jim Broadbent) youngest son, Arthur (James McAvoy), discovers that one child has been missed, he sets out on a mission, with the help of Grandsanta and a giftwrapping-obsessed elf (Ashley Jensen), to get that last present delivered before Christmas morning dawns.

During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, the fantastically lovely Bill Nighy talked about at first thinking he was being asked to play Santa and then realizing what a great character Grandsanta was, navigating voice roles by what he doesn’t want the character to sound like to make sure it’s unique, and how he’s so low-tech that he doesn’t own a computer and only recently was talked into getting an iPhone. He also talked about playing a 22-foot tall giant who eats people in Jack the Giant Killer, playing Hephaestus (the armorer to the Gods) in Wrath of the Titans, his trust in Len Wiseman as a storyteller for the remake of Total Recall (he plays Kuato in the film), his fear of harming Dame Judy Dench while driving her around on a motorcycle for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, making two more films with the Johnny Worricker character from David Hare’s Page Eight, finally getting the call to be a part of the Harry Potter franchise, and getting stopped all the time by fans who love his work in both Shaun of the Dead and Love, Actually. First Trailer for PAGE EIGHT Starring Rachel Weisz and Bill Nighy

The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival is coming up and I’m insanely jealous of everyone that’s able to go because the line-up of films being showcased is stellar. Among the many features poised to screen at the fest is the spy thriller Page Eight, for which we unveiled a number of new images yesterday. Written and directed by The Reader screenwriter David Hare, the film centers on a long-serving M15 officer (Bill Nighy) who is left an inexplicable file and becomes concerned with a political activist (Rachel Weisz) that begins snooping around. The cast also includes Michael Gambon, Judy Davis, and Ralph Fiennes.

This is very much a teaser trailer, as it doesn’t really give away much of the story. I’m liking the dramatic spy-thriller tone so far though, played much more as a drama than an action film, and I’m intrigued enough to want to see more. Hit the jump to watch the trailer yourself. Damsels in Distress (starring Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody), Goon (starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, and Liev Schreiber), Page Eight (starring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, and Ralph Fiennes), and Violet & Daisy (starring Saoirse Ronan, Alexis Bledel, and James Gandolfini) are all playing at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.  We have images for these films.  We think you’d like to see them.

TIFF 2011: PAGE EIGHT, SLEEPING BEAUTY, VIOLET & DAISY, and More Added to Galas and Special Presentations Line-Up

A task can’t get “more impossible”, but the prospect of seeing everything I want at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival just got more impossible.  We’ve already shown you the incredible line-ups for the Galas & Special Presentations, Real-to-Reel (Documentary), Midnight Madness, Vanguard, TIFF Kids, City to City, Canadian Features, and Canada First! programs. Now even more must-see movies have been thrown into the mix.  TIFF has announced that the spy thriller Page Eight (starring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, and Ralph Fiennes) will be the closing night film in the Galas section.  Other films added to Galas and Special Presentations include Sleeping Beauty (starring Emily Browning), Winnie (starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard), Intruders (starring Clive Owen), Violet & Daisy (starring Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel), and more.
