Director Roman Coppola is firming up the cast for his next directorial project, and he’s putting together quite the ensemble. Variety reports that Bill Murray, Patricia Arquette, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have joined A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III. The film stars Charlie Sheen as a successful graphic designer whose fame and fortune have made him irresistible to women. After his girlfriend breaks up with him, he heads into a downward spiral that forces him to look back on his failed romantic history. Coppola wrote the film himself and will also be producing and directing.
Murray has some history with Coppola, as he was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Roman’s sister Sofia’s Lost in Translation. While the Sheen casting had me a bit nervous about the project, subsequent additions to the cast piqued my interest, and this latest trio is a welcomed addition. Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, and Katheryn Winnick also star. Production is currently underway in Los Angeles.

We’ve got a few casting stories for you today. First up, Matthew Macfadyen (The Three Musketeers) has joined the cast of director Joe Wright’s (Hanna) adaptation of Anna Karenina. The Daily Mail (via Dark Horizons) reports that Macfadyen replaces Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Oblonsky in the film version of Leo Tolstoy’s classic tragic love story. In addition to Macfadyen, Olivia Williams, Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Risebourough have joined the cast as well. Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson and Kelly Macdonald are set to star in the Tom Stoppard-scripted (Shakespeare in Love) flick. Filming is set to begin this fall.
Next up, Patricia Arquette has joined the cast of brother David’s directing vehicle Glutton. The psychological thriller stars Abraham Benrubi (ER) as a 1,200 pound bedridden man. Arquette and Kacey Barnfield play the two female leads in the 3D flick. Variety reports that Arquette will play the man’s sister, while Barnfield will take on the role of a blind neighbor. Hit the jump for the casting of Adhir Kalyan in the indie film Samaritan as well as a synopsis of the book Anna Karenina.

After NBC decided they wanted no more of Patricia Arquette’s dramatic thriller series Medium, CBS graciously saved the series and added it to their line-up. However, cancellation recently seemed inevitable once more since the network didn’t pick up another nine episodes for a full season order for the series’ currently airing seventh season. Series lead star Arquette even said this to EW earlier this week, “I was trying to get information from the writers about the last episode. I don’t know what it’s going to be, but they’re really excited about it. They’re like, ‘We’re just going to burn the whole thing down!’ I’m really excited. It’s been a great time. I love that time in my life.”
Series creator Glenn Gordon Caron confirmed the cancellation on the show’s Facebook page: “It’s true. Allison Dubois will dream her last dream on Fri 1/21. In what we believe will be a series defining episode, Allison and her family will stare destiny in the eye. And destiny will not blink.” Certainly a bit hyperbolic, but it sounds like the writers are sending out the series in a blaze of crazy glory. I never got into the series, but there are likely some fans out there who are disappointed. Feel free to express your frustration in the comments.

While director Richard Linklater is having problems getting his “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused off the ground, that doesn’t mean he isn’t working. In fact, last week he was filming some of his secret 13 year project with Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as a divorced couple. Haven’t heard of the film yet? According to Linklater, good.
The reason I say that is when I spoke to Linklater during a roundtable interview a few days ago, he said he wished IMDb hadn’t listed the project. Because now that it’s on the site, everyone is asking about a project that’s still being written and worked on.
But when I sat down to speak to him during my exclusive interview, when we finally got to talking about the project, he opened up a lot more than I expected him to. Saying that, since I knew he wanted to keep a lot of the project under wraps, I didn’t press him for info. But he still told me a lot about it and if you’re curious, hit the jump for what he said:
