Last month we reported that the Gene Roddenberry series Star Trek: The Next Generation would be getting a long-overdue high definition makeover for its Blu-ray debut later this year. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, all 178 episodes will eventually be released, but in the meantime fans will have to make due with a three-episode special called, Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level. It will include the feature-length version of the pilot, as well as the season three episode “Sins of the Father” and the season five episode “The Inner Light.” The Next Level will hit shelves on January 31, 2012 and has a suggested retail price of $21.99. Star Trek: The Next Generation is officially, and finally, coming to Blu-ray. StarTrek.com confirms the news, and says the discs will start hitting in January. Rather than kick off with season one, a sampler set of episodes will be the first Blu-ray to be released. The complete first season will hit shelves later next year, with the subsequent seasons to follow. The Next Generation ran for seven seasons from 1987 to 1994, with 178 episodes. For the HD transfer, CBS is returning to the original film negatives to bring the highest quality image. Visual effects won’t be upconverted, but instead the studio will recomposition them, culminating in true 1080p HD masters with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. Denise and Michael Okuda are overseeing the transfer.

The sampler will be called Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level. It will include the feature-length version of the pilot, as well as the season three episode “Sins of the Father” and the season five episode “The Inner Light.” The Next Level will hit shelves on January 31, 2012 and has a suggested retail price of $21.99.  Hit the jump for the trailer and box artwork.

This time last week, I was writing about how happy I was to be in San Diego, 2,000 miles away from the godless heat of the Midwest. Fast-forward to the present, and I’m happy to report that things back home have really cooled off with a heat index hovering right around a brisk 108 degrees Fahrenheit. At this rate, I should be able to check my mail without fear of sweating through my clothes any day now (baby steps, people, baby steps). Because I truly care about our readers, I’m hoping that wherever you’re reading this from is cool, comfortable, and free of any sort of sweating. Now, onto the important stuff…

In this week’s “Top 5″ installment we have an abundance of coverage for The Avengers, a video interview with the iconic Patrick Stewart, the first look at Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, the first trailer for director Peter Berg’s adaptation of Hasbro’s Battleship, and Matt’s cast interviews and review of Crazy, Stupid, Love.. Hit the jump for brief recaps and links to each.

At this year’s Comic-Con, I got to talk to someone whose work I’ve loved for a very long time: Patrick Stewart.  While many Star Trek fans debate which show was the best, I’ve always thought Star Trek: The Next Generation was the one that got everything right, and I’ve watched every episode at least a few times.  Trust me, if you had seen my face while doing this interview, you’d have thought I’d won a million dollars.

The reason Stewart was at his first Comic-Con is the movie Dorothy of Oz.  In the upcoming animated film, Stewart will voice a character named Tugg (you can watch him talk about the character here).  During the interview, Stewart talked about his love of animated films, making Dorothy of Oz, being at Comic-Con for the first time, how you can get him to record his voice for an answering machine message, when he looks back on his experience filming Star Trek: TNG what’s the one thing he remembers, has he seen X-Men: First Class and J.J. Abrams Star Trek, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Patrick Stewart adds gravitas to anything he does.  That’s why he’s so funny when he does something like Extras or Family Guy.  Stewart will be bringing his unmistakable voice to the upcoming 3D CG-animated musical Dorothy of Oz and we’re happy to announce that he’ll be making his first Comic-Con appearance on Saturday, July 23rd in Hall H at 4:30-5:30.

In addition, we have exclusive video of him speaking about his character “Tugg”.  Stewart also talks about working again with fellow voice actors Kelsey Grammer and Martin Short and what he finds so appealing about animation and Dorothy of Oz in particular.  Hit the jump to check out the exclusive video.  The producers of the film are Summertime Entertainment, Ryan Carroll, Roland Carroll and Bonne Radford.  Dorothy of Oz is set to arrive sometime in 2012.

Trailer for William Shatner’s STAR TREK Documentary THE CAPTAINS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: July 1st, 2011 at 2:41 pm

William Shatner has taken it upon himself to create a documentary about Star Trek, specifically focusing on the many captains that have spearheaded the series over the years. In The Captains, Shatner sits down for interviews with head honchos Patrick Stewart (The Next Generation), Kate Mulgrew (Voyager), Scott Bakula (Enterprise), Avery Brooks (Deep Space Nine) and Chris Pine, who took on the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot.

A trailer for Shatner’s documentary has been released, and it’s pretty entertaining. The actor’s sensibilities are perfect as the host and star of the film, and the idea of interviewing each of the Star Trek captains is pretty genius. Plus, Shatner being Shatner, his reaction to a fan towards the end of the trailer is definitely a highlight. The Captains will premiere on July 21st on the cable channel EPIX HD.

James McAvoy Compares His Take on Professor Xavier in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS to Sir Patrick Stewart’s

As far as I can tell, we’re all pretty much on board with James McAvoy as Matthew Vaughn’s choice to play a younger version of Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class.  But Sir Patrick is a fine, fine actor — classically trained and all that.  McAvoy has his work set out for him in crafting a performance that lives up to Stewart’s Professor X in the initial X-Men trilogy.  The Scottish actor seems up for the challenge, confident enough to joke, “I’m basically going to try and bury Patrick’s performance.”

He followed up with more serious discussion of his approach, how he’d like to link his Xavier to Stewart’s by the end of First Class.  Hit the jump for his precise comments, in both print and video form.

First Sketches from DOROTHY OF OZ Starring Lea Michele, Oliver Platt, Dan Aykroyd, and Patrick Stewart

We have found some pretty cool concept art for Dorothy of Oz, an upcoming 3D animated musical feature based on the classic L. Frank Baum children’s novels.  The voice cast is led by Glee‘s Lea Michele as Dorothy Gale, with the likes of Oliver Platt, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, and Patrick Stewart supporting.  I’ve always been a fan of early glimpses into the animation process: check out a comparison of the sketch of nine different characters and the actor who will bring them to life after the jump.

Lea Michele, Oliver Platt, Dan Aykroyd, and Patrick Stewart Lend Their Voices to DOROTHY OF OZ

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 11th, 2010 at 10:34 am

The upcoming 3D animated film Dorothy of Oz has made a very smart casting decision by having Glee star Lea Michele provide the lead voice in their animated-musical family film.  It’s not just smart because Michele is an amazing singer.  It’s smart because Glee is one of the hottest shows on television right now and studios should be rushing to pick up any star from the show as fast as possible.  The actor or actress won’t be able to open a movie on their own, but if paired with the right project and with a fairly talented ensemble, it could really help garner attention to a project.

The fairly talented ensemble backing up Michele includes Oliver Platt, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, and Patrick Stewart.  The film is also launching an interactive teaser website at dorothyofoz.com.  Hit the jump to check out the press release.  And for our previous coverage of the film at the American Film Market, click here.

TMG sets it sights on MOBY DICK, Brings William Hurt and Ethan Hawke Aboard

Moby Dick, William Hurt and Ethan Hawke slice.jpg

The Tele Munchen Group, one of Germany’s largest media corporations has decided that Herman Melville’s classic tale of Man vs. Wild vs. Self needs to be adapted yet again. The book already been made into four English-language films (five if you count the “lost” Orson Welles adaptation) but, hey, why not one more? William Hurt will star as the tortured Captain Ahab and Ethan Hawke will portray Starbuck, the first officer of the ship and the only crew member to oppose Ahab’s obsession. Hit the jump to find out why TMG is sparing no expense in producing the movie after the jump.

Ricky Gervais’ THE INVENTION OF LYING Trailer

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 27th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

The Invention of Lying movie logo.jpg

There may be bigger comedies on the horizon (“Bruno”, “Funny People”) but Ricky Gervais’ “The Invention of Lying” (formerly known as “This Side of the Truth”) remains high on my radar as it should anyone that is fan of Gervais because while “Ghost Town” was surprisingly good, I feel like this is his big cinematic debut for US audiences.

Yahoo! Movies recently debuted the trailer for the film and it looks very…Gervais.  Based in a world where everyone always tells the truth, Gervais’ character discovers that he can lie.  If there’s only minor flaw that caught me in the trailer, it seems like Gervais’ character is astounded when folks tell him the truth.  Everyone else reacts deadpan and like it’s not a big deal (which makes sense) but Gervais reacts like he does whenever anyone said something stupid to him on “Extras”.  But perhaps these reaction shots are after he’s acquired his “lying” ability.  Check out the trailer after the jump.
