As expected, neither of this week’s new comedies came close to catching Transformers 3 on its second weekend.  While Horrible Bosses became the latest R-rated comedy to top expectations this summer, Zookeeper became the latest potential tentpole to fall flat.  Meanwhile, both films combined barely topped this weekend’s estimate for Dark of the Moon, which became the US’s highest-grossing release of 2011 as of Sunday.

Title Weekend Total
1 Transformers 3 $47,000,000 $261
2 Horrible Bosses $28,100,000 $28.1
3 Zookeeper $21,000,000 $21
4 Cars 2 $15,209,000 $148.8
5 Bad Teacher $9,000,000 $78.7
6 Larry Crowne $6,264,000 $26.5
7 Super 8 $4,825,000 $118
8 Monte Carlo $3,800,000 $16.1
9 Green lantern $3,125,000 $109.7
10 Mr. Popper’s Penguins $2,850,000 $57.7

January suffered another down weekend, with estimated grosses for the top ten films down almost 56% over this weekend in 2010.  Paramount had reason to celebrate, as True Grit outdrew Little Fockers in the weekend race for the first time.  Season of the Witch, 2011’s first new title, struggled while Sony/SG’s Country Strong did modest business in its first expanded nationwide run.

Title Weekend Total
1 True Grit $15,000,000 $110.4
2 Little Fockers $13,800,000 $124
3 Season of the Witch $10,700,000 $10.7
4 Tron Legacy $9,803,000 $147.9
5 Black Swan $8,400,000 $61.4
6 Country Strong $7,300,000 $7.4
7 The Fighter $7,000,000 $57.8
8 The King’s Speech $6,811,000 $33.2
9 Yogi Bear $6,810,000 $75.6
10 Tangled $5,200,000 $175.8

Sony Pictures Teams up with Kevin James Again for HERE COMES THE BOOM

It’s not surprising that Sony Pictures would want to stay friends with Kevin James.  Paul Blart: Mall Cop raked in $183 million worldwide and countless tears for humanity off a budget of $26 million.  The next Sony/James collaboration, The Zookeeper, was recently pushed back from October to next summer because the studio thinks it will be a major blockbuster.

Now Variety reports that the studio and actor will reunite again for the action comedy Here Comes the Boom.  Plot details are being kept under wraps.  I don’t know which is sadder: that it has a plot or that it’s considered so mind-blowing that you’re not ready to even know what it’s about.  James co-wrote the script with Rock Reuben and will also serve as a producer on the film alongside Adam Sandler and Todd Garner.  Salma Hayek is circling the role of the film’s female lead.

Hollywood Tops $10 Billion for First Time in 2009

With Avatar the reigning champ and Sherlock Holmes still to come, Hollywood crossed the $10 billion line for the first time in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales for 2009.  Through Sunday, the total stood just $36 million short of crossing the $10 billion line, according to tracking firm Hollywood Box Office, and was set to plow across it Tuesday night.

The year’s top box office attractions were Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and with hits like Harry Potter and The Hangover, Warner Bros. was the North American box office champ among studios.  And with both Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Sherlock Holmes and the return of those rascally rodents in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel coming in time for Christmas, the final take is expected to top $10.4 billion.

PAUL BLART Director Steve Carr Creates a SHORT CIRCUIT

While I’m nostalgic for the “Short Circuit” movies, that nostalgia doesn’t extend to getting bent out of shape over a remake of “Short Circuit” nor can my outrage be summoned by the news that “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” helmer Steve Carr will direct the film.  Variety reports that the Carr will shoot the film based on Dan Milano’s script which brings Johnny 5 into the 21st century meaning he’ll probably still resemble Johnny 5 but there will be loads of unnecessary CG enhancements and “upgrades” to Johnny’s arsenal.  However, I’ll retract that statement if one of those upgrades is a detachable Steve Guttenberg.

Here’s how Variety describes the plot of the remake: “Built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon, Johnny 5 develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family.”  Wow.  That sounds like a great movie.
