Yesterday, we reported the exciting news that Paul Reubens would be teaming up with Judd Apatow for a new Pee-Wee movie. Today, Reubens (who created and plays the manic Pee-Wee Herman) spoke more about the project that he’s co-writing with actor Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper) and that Apatow is producing. Speaking to The New York Times, Reubens said that he had scripts that would follow his wonderful children’s show Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, the classic Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and the not-so-classic Big-Top Pee-Wee. However, Apatow said “He was more interested in something closer, in the same vein and the same genre, as Big Adventure.”
Hit the jump for more on what Reubens had to say about his new project. I also provide my thoughts on what I hope the new film will be.

Chris Columbus used to have a magic touch. Sure, you might not have liked the movies, but he was the hand behind the first two Home Alone movies and the first two Harry Potter films. He’s had misfires, for sure, but his first major script was Gremlins. Gremlins. But when you look at his filmography he goes from highs to lows, but there’s something of a chance-taker in him too. He was the guy who wanted to direct Rent, for god’s sake. And though his plastic hands have released such odious affairs as Stepmom and Bicentennial Man, he’s not a filmmaker to write off. My review of his latest – I Love You Beth Cooper – after the jump.

“I Love You, Beth Cooper” is so close to a worthwhile film. With just a bit more polish and imagination, it could easily be one of this year’s sleeper hits. Sadly, both its direction and script are lacking and while it does offer a fantastic lead performance from Paul Rust and a nice, comic tone that keeps the proceedings light, there’s a frustration from a film that could have been special with just a little more effort.
